Linder Wins Battle With Livestock Dealers

Solons Refuse To Curb Commissi

Agriculture Commissioner Tom Linder
won a major battle in his fight with live-
stock auction barn operators January

29th when a House committee rejected -

a bill to curb Linders

livestock industry.
After a three-hour session, including

a public hearing into which personalities

; power over the

_ were frequently injected, the House Agri-

culture Committee voted 25 to 4 against
HB 166 by Rep. B. C. Gardner Jr., of
Dougherty County. -

The bill would have created an 11-
member livestock board, with Linder as
chairman, tu exercise control over live-
stock regulations, which are now vested
solely in the commissioner.

Despite the lopsided committee vote,
an effort could be made to have the
House disagree with the committee re-
port. But committee members indicated
they do not anticipate such a move.

After a public hearing, the committee
went into executive session and debated
the bill anotner 30 minutes before voting
that it do not pass.

Linder hotly attacked the bill and its
proponents in his editorials in the Market
Bulletin, which his department publishes.
And the House chamber was filled for
the hearing, with spectators about evenly

divided.

Gardner said that he helped pass

- House Bill 507 last year.
That was the highly controversial bill b

he said.

giving Linder the authority to regulate
the livestock industry. But the Albany
legislator said no man should have the
power to put a Jivestock dealer out of
business.

J. W. (Taxi) Smith, Albany diame:
and several livestock dealers supporting
the bill, aimed sharp criticism at Linders
administration of the act.

But Linder made his defense a vigor-
ous offense He charged the livestock
barn operators are objecting because the
law is being enforced.

And commenting on criticism of some
of his inspectors, he said you legislators
ought to know how good they are because
practically every one of them was recom-
mended to me by a member of the Legis-
lature.

The commissioner declared the barn
operators by their own statements proved
they have made money.

He reported that hog prices paid
Georgia farmers are about two cents a
pound higher than in neighboring states
and charged the barn operators are irked
about that. They cant make as much
money paying Georgia farmers. the same
price that is paid on the Chicago market,
