himself and to win promotion after pro-
motion, especially in the war with Mexi-
co under General Winfield Scott. Some
time after his return from Mexico he
was made Superintendent at West Point
although he did not desire this position.
As Superintendent at West Point he
had the training of a number of officers
who later took prominent roles in the
War Between the States. Among these
was Jeb Stuart who later performed
such magnificent exploits becoming a
general at the early age of 27.
Robert E. Lee being primarily respon-
-sible for engineering in the army, had
never commanded more than four squad-
rons of horse before 1861, and that for
only a forty-day period in 1856. It is,
therefore, all the more remarkable that
he was able to take command of the
Confederate forces in the field and gain
for himself world renown as a military
commander,
When Robert E. Lee took command
he called his army The Army of North-
ern Virginia. At that time he was 595
years of age, 5 feet 10 1/2 inches tall
and weighed around 170 pounds. His
appearance was magnificent, with broad
shoulders, strong chest and large neck.
His head was well-moulded and he had

During the 34 months in which he ~

Sometimes the odds against him were
never less than three to two, sometimes ~
three to one, and sometimes even more,
General Lee was a soldiers soldier. er
He was a civilians ideal. Even in times
of greatest stress he always refrained
from criticism of other commanders who,
although subordinate to him, were opera- -~
ting at a distance from him. He often .
told President Jefferson Davis that the
general in command on the ground knew
circumstances and conditions which he ~
could not possibly know. This was partic-
ularly true with regard to General Joseph
EK. Johnston who commanded the army
of Eastern Tennessee and whose genius
in carrying on a defensive war wrought
such havoc with the army of Sherman.
The great nobility of soul and Chris-
tian fark of General Lee was perhaps
most sorely tried when it was necessary
for him to decide to surrender to Grant
at Appomattox, Virginia. It is undoubted-
ly true that General Lee was held in the |
highest esteem by the commanding of-
ficers of the opposing army of any man.
in history who was forced to surrender ~
and admit defeat.
After the surrender, in spite of the

the people of the South to let the past
be only memory and to live for a better

Had itbeen possible for a man among
men, General Lee, to have been Presi-
dent of the United States in 1861 instead
of a man who was ignorant of Southern
people like Abraham Lincoln, it is entire- |
ly possible that the War Between the
States, with all its misery, blood and
aftermath, could have been avoided.

The farmer growing hybrid corn realizes thi

He does not detect as easily the losses occ

belief that cotton varieties run out if he conti

Occasions arise whereby a new developm

a newly developed cotton variety must be tested | |

example, a warning as to what can happen if-the
plantings should be increased without a renewal
from the breeder, should be given. Early-Fluff, ;
developed variety of cotton at the Georgia Coasta
Experiment Station, Tifton, Georgia, has given
results for the past two or three years in yield tes
the state. At the same time a few farmers have ol
seed of Early-Fluff for trial plantings and have bee
pleased, Because of its early maturity and its fluffy
it is quite popular with the farmer. However, at th
