grade A milk has the effect of putting
grade A cream on the same market level
as cream from manufacturing grades of

milk.

DECLINING SALES. OF MILK
There is rapidly developing a nation-

wide shortage of milk. This is due to

competition of milk substitutes and the

- penalizing of American dairymen, especi-

ally those who produce grade A milk "*
AMERICAN DAIRY ASSOCIATION
Mr. Pat Crowe of Smyrna, Georgia

gave a report as to. the American Dairy
_ Association and its advertising campaign.

SUBSTITUTES S Se

The American Dairy Association is

an association of manufacturers and pro-

cessors. Their advertising program by
radio, magazines, newspapers, etc. is
necessarily concerned with dairy products
that have been processed or manufactur-
ed. They have no interest in grade A
milk other than to substitute manufact-

uring grades for grade/A in the consumer

market. In newspapers, magazines and
on the radio you read and hear ads and
commericals on milk products and milk
substitutes. Taking all of these things into
consideration, the whole question boils
down to the simple proposition of whether
or not we shall continue to have a grade
A dairy in this State. It is obvious that

-we cannot have grade A milk in Georgia

if we expect the dairymen to produce
grade A milk and sell it in competition
with powders from unsanitary manu-
factured milk, and in competition with
foreign imports of dairy products and
vegetable products.

If the coming session of the Legisla-
ture is called upon to pass on any meas-
ure affecting the dairy industry, this is
the question that will confront them,
to-wit: Do we or do we not intend to
continue to have grade A milk for our
children and sick people?

SUBSTITUTES AND IMITATIONS

SOLD UNDER TRADE NAMES

It has now become the practice of
many food manufacturers and processors
to put out foods of many kinds, including
new mixtures of foods, under some trade
name. The use of new trade names has
the effect of deceiving the consuming
public as to the true nature of these foods.
As an illustration, an imitation ice cream
which is made from soybean meal and
oil, sugar and flavoring, and sold under
a trade name will be eaten by many
people who believe they are eating ice
cream. It seems to me we should have a
law requiring the label on all food to

_ show exactly what it is made of and the

erates used, This is the only way

to protect the consuming public against
frauds. There are many other foods sold

by names which deceive the public as_
to their true contents. As an illustration,

sausage, ground meats, meat loaf, etc.,
and of course when you get into the |

category of hot dogs, weiners and ham-
burgers, you never know whether or

not you are eating pork, beef, entrails,
lites, livers or what. The truth is that
people eat many things in prepared foods _
that they would not put on their table if
they knew what it was. This is why we

should have a food law requiring a plain
label in the English language stating in
common English terms the contents of
all food preparations and the percentage ;
of each ingredient. The increase in can-_

cer, heart disease, stomach trouble, and

other diseases cannot all be blamed on. =
tobacco and whiskey. These no doubt ~
take their toll, but improper foods no

doubt take a much heavier toll, because
improper foods affect children in their
growing years and lay a foundation in~
weakened constitutions for the ravages ue
disease in later years.

VETERINARY DIVISION
Some of the duties of the Veterinary

Division of the State Department of
Agriculture are to keep records of im-
ports of powdered, condensed and skim-~_
med milk, and to permit their use only

on permit by distributors and processors. _

Another duty is to prevent imports of
whole milk for bottling purposes unless
such milk is produced and handled under
conditions no less adequate for the pro-
tection of public welfare than grade A

~ milk produced in Georgia. It is the ave
of the Veterinary Division to see that

=

milking herds are regularly tested for
tuberculosis, brucellosis and other dis-

eases; to see that all milk distributing

plants and dairies are conducted in a =

sanitary manner for the protection and

health of the people; and to see that no
untested animals are carried from sales

barns into. clean herds.

Weare living in a day of rapid changes :
of all kinds. Each year men become more

anxious to make money. Many men are _

willing to do almost anything to make a

few dollars. Sometimes the health of the

people is involved, as well as the health

of livestock, Public officials who perform
their duty and undertake to carry out

the laws of the state are bound to get on
some peoples toes.

and death. Disease and death can easily
result through failure to carry out sani-

tary laws and food laws.
