Editorial By TOM LINDER

[fo many it simply means a day when
banks close. It means a day that the
ce closes and we have a holiday. It
ans a day when we eat turkey and
ssing with cranberry sauce, It means
y when we can take a vacation trip
o hunting. To some, it means just

these things were all that Thanks-
ing Day really, meant, it would be a
un-hallowed holiday.

When we fully understand the origin
d meaning of Thanksgiving Day, we
ze that Thanksgiving Day stands for
rica and Americanism. :

" hanksgivihg Day means the same

ng that Old Glory means.
Thanksgiving Day is a day when the
nerican flag should fly from every
ist-head and be displayed: from every
g pole because if there had been no
hanksgiving Day, there would have
*been no Old Glory.

Thanksgiving Day stands for recogni-
on of Gods hand in the affairs of free
wen. Thanksgiving Day stands for the
4 nfaltering courage of seventy-four men
nd twenty-eight women who were de-
mined to worship God according to
ie dictates of their own conscience re-
ardless of any earthly consequence.

'Thanksgiving Day stands for a per-
etual memorial to those men and wom-
n and to their thankfulness to God for
reserving and feeding them.

Three hundred and twenty-four years
"ago there were a band of men and wom-
fen in Holland who had fled from Eng-
md to Holland to preserve their lives
rom religious persecution in England.

On August 15, 1620, seventy-four of
hese men and twenty-eight of these
fomen set sail in a little ship called the
Mayflower to make their home, if it
leased God, in the unknown wilderness
f North America.

_ After being in this ship and being toss-
by the angry waves of the North At-
mtic for four months and six days, they
mded at Plymouth Rock in what is now
nhown as the State of Massachusetts, on
lecember 21, 1620.

Tf you have never been in Massachu-
tts or other northern climates in the
ntertime, it is hard to imagine the con-
ition faced by this dauntless crew on

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1951

landing on that bleak icy shore on the
very shortest day in the year and when
the nights were the longest in the year.

Uniess you are familiar with the very
hard rocky land, you cannot imagine the
tremendous toil-involved for these sev-
enty-four men and twenty-eight women
to clear land of the primeval forest and
dig the rocky land enough to plant their
very meager supply of seed grain.

In order to-have any grain at all to-

plant in the spring of 1621, these men
and women were forced to go without
bread, They could not eat bread except
by eating the seeds they need must plant
to have bread the following winter.

In this connection, there is one fact
that we Americans overlook. We should
have built a monument. to the Indians
who lived in Massachusetts because had
it not been for the kindly and humane
Indians, this little band of Pilgrims
would have perished in the winter cold.

The shameful fact of the matter is,
that the trouble the white people later
had with the Indians was due entirely to
mistreatment of the Indians by the white
people who lived among them.

What we cali corn in this country was
unknown in the Old World. It was a
plant that grew only in America., The
Indians called it hominy.

The Indians had crude stone mortars
and crude rock pestles with which they
ground this hominy for food.

What we call roasting ears, the In-
dians called chickahominy medning
green corn. Chicka was the Indian
word for green.

Every summer when the roasting ears
or chickahominy were ready to eat, the
Indians held a great feast. Down in
Virginia, this annual feast was held on
a river bank and the Indians named this
river in honor of their feast. They cali-
ed it Chickahominy.= It goes by that
name until this day.

These men and women who were de-
nied the right to have firearms in the
Old Country realized the vital need of
the right to carry firearms. Without
firearms they could not protect them-
selves from their enemy, Without fire-
arms they could not even get food.

As a consequence of such experiences
as the Pilgrims had, it was written into
our Constitution, The right of the citi-
zens to keep and bear arms shall not be
infringed.

Such experiences as the Pilgrim Fa-

thers had were responsible for all of the
provisions in our Bill of Rights to pro-
tect the liberty of individuals under our
American system. :

No more sublime courage was ever ex-
hibited by mortal men than was shown
by these emigrants to America in 1620.
They had, not only sublime courage, but
they had something more than courage.
They had a childlike faith in God. They
were willing to commit their destiny into
His keeping. They were willing to go

where He wanted them to go.

It is no wonder that the descendants
of such men and such women built a
country that became the envy of the
world.

It is no wonder that Patrick Henry
should have said, Is life so dear or peace
so sweet as to be purchased at the price-

of chains and slavery?

It is no wonder that Thomas Jeffer-
son should have said, I have an abiding
faith in the common sense of the com-
mon people. :

The cominon people that Thomas Jef-
ferson was talking about were the des-
cendants of pioneers like the Pilgrim Fa-
thers. S

It is no wonder that Robert E. Lee
should have said, Duty is the most sub-
lime word in the English language.

Robert E. Lee was a man from fore-
parents who held liberty dearer than life
itself.

We should, of course, give thanks te
Almighty God even as did the Pilgrim
Fathers.

Measured in terms of worldy goods
and worldly comforts, we are today to
the Pilgrim Fathers; as the rich man who
dined sumptuously every day, was to the
beggar, Lazarus, who lay in the gate
while the dogs licked his sores.

We should give thanks for the mar-
velous and bountiful blessings which He
has poured out upon us with unstinted
hand.

We should remember those early pi-
oneers, including the Pilgrim Fathers,
who founded this great free land. ~

In order that we may retain these
blessings and hand them down to our
descendants, we should study American.
history and principles in the light of
courage, faith and love of liberty exhibit-
ed by those seventy-four men and twen-
ty-eight women who made the first
Thanksgiving Day a day of thanks.
