expenses of the farm and the
farmer has a gross in- |
of about 20 percent per year. This means
the cost of his farm equipment per year
is $500.00.
_ After paying for tie fertilizer and his
tractor, he has a gross- income left of
$1,166.80.
The average acreage per farm, accord-
ing to the Government report is 34 acres,

amount on an average to $2.00 per acre
or $68.00 per farm. After the farmer
has paid for fuel-and oil, he has abal-
ance of gross returns. of $1, 098.80.
Parts, repairs: and servicing on his
equipment will cost him another $68. 00,
leaving him a balance of gross income
of $1,030.80.
In addition to the tractor work ee
there is a great deal of light cultivation
that is ordinarily done with mule power
or with light tractor equipment. The
cost of this light cultivation in either
case will cost him at least another $100.-
00, leaving a gross balance of $930.80.
Then there is the matter of hand labor
such as preparing seed beds and buying.
equipment and supplies for the seed beds.
The matter of transplanting by hand,
hoeing the grass and weeds out of the
drill, ete.
: must pay at least $4, 00 per day and-to
_ this must be added in a great many cases
the cost of operating a truck to haul-this
For this labor, the farmer
hired labor to and from their homes.
This hired labor for the production of an
average crop, to say nothing of the har-
vesting, will cost at least another $100.00,
leaving a gross balance of $830.80.
Before the farmer can plant his crop
- and seed beds there is the question of

than $2.00 per acre and usually $5.00 or
$6.00 per acre. The average we will say
would be $4.00 per acre or $136.00 for
the farm, leaving a gross balance to the
farmer of $694.80.
In addition to all of the shee many
crops now require the application of in-
_ secticidesto keep them from being de-
stroyed by insects. On some crops the,
cost of purchasing and applying insecti-
cides is itself a major item of cost. In
the case of cotton, for instance, the cost
of insecticides alone will run from 10 to
20 percent of the value of the cotton crop.
_ However, for the sake of being conserva-
tive, let us say that the cost of purchas-
ing and applying insecticides amounts to
only 10 percent of the crop. This is an-
other $185.20 of expense and leaves a
grass balance to the farmer of $509.60.

leaving a gross balance of $46.60.
This would leave the farmer $46.60
$46.60 on 34 acres. $46.60
for four people. $11.65 for each person
per year.
t is true that the above figures are
based only on crops and do not cover
It is al-
so true that the above figures are aver-
ages. and many farmers make a better
showing. But it is likewise true that
many farmers fall below the average and
their plight is worse than the average
It is also true that
figures indicated.
many farmers have a great deal of ex-
pense not enumerated in this article,
Many items which would have been con-
sidered luxuries a few years ago are now
household necessities. Many farmers
have electric lights and power. They
should have electric lights and power.
They are entitled to them. However,
that does not change the fact that each -
month they must find the money to pay
electric washing machines, electric re-
frigerators and electric equipment which
are vital and necessary and which no one
would want the farmer to do without.
Nevertheless, to live on the farm and en-
joy these modern necessities requires
that the farmer have an income which |
will enable him to pay for them. This
he cannot do with an average
gross crop of $1,852.00.
There are those who say that the farm-
er should reduce his cost of production.
It would be equally logical to say that
the banker should reduce his cost of mak-
ing loans, that the contractor should re- -
duce his cost of putting up buildings;
that the manufacturer should reduce his
cost of turning out clothing; automobiles, ~
tractors, farm equipment and electric
appliances. It could as logically be said
that the cost of Government should be
reduced.
The hard facts are, however, that the
farmer does not control the cost of pro=
duetion, but is a creature of circum-
stance. He must buy his supplies and
labor at the market price and he must
pay -what is asked. Hehas no choice.
The facts are, as have been reiterated
in the columns of this Bulletin time and
again over the years, that the farmers
prices have never been increased in
proportion to the general economic level
of prices. The scale of parity prices fix-
ed by Congress do not represent parity
in any sense of the word. This has been
