- anced and well rounded farm program,

We should never put all our eggs in one
We should always remember
that regardless of how good our pastures

are, it is well to grow some feed for sup-
plementary rations and for use in an
emergency.

We are all prone when we have an ex-

tended period of favorable weather to be-
come careless and not maintain sufficient
provisions for that period of extreme
weather that is sure to come sooner or
later.

Since the freeze, I have alsa taken oc-
casion to make a trip down through Flori-
da across to the West Coast and back up
through the vegetable and plant grow-
ing areas of that State. I was especially
anxious to see if all Florida crops were
destroyed, because we know from experi-
ence that when the Florida crops are

- ruined and a late crop is planted there is

a probability of some of the Florida crops
and the South Georgia crops coming on
at the same time. We have had experi-
ences of this kind several different years.

The extreme low temperatures all the
way down in Florida have wiped out the
early vegetable crops and early plants.
The weather permitting, no. doubt the
Florida farmers will go back to work and

plant again. There is no certainty what

will happen to the next planting because
this is an extremely bad winter and
might continue for another 30 or 60 days.

This makes it extremely important for

_ the vegetable growers in South Georgia

to keep posted about the conditions and
progress of Florida crops in timing all
vegetable crops in South Georgia, I will
try to give you further information along

.this line as conditions warrant.

In traveling thrugh the Everglade
section of Florida, I was very much
impressed with the rapid development of
vegetable and plant production. It was
amazing also to see the tremendous in-
vestment in machinery required for car-
rying out a great deal of the projects now
being developed in the Everglades. Thou-
sands of acres have been and are being
cleared, and I noticed great steam shovels
cutting canals around these tracts and
putting all of the dirt on the side of the
canal away from the cleared land. This
gives a canal completely around the cul-
tivated land and then lateral canals are
cut through the clearing connecting with
the main canal at each end. With these

canals around and through the cleared -

land and with the dam:or levee around

_ the cleared land outside the canals, the

farmer is equipped to irrigate his crops

by pumping water into the canals from

the outside. In cases of excessive rain-
fall, the pumps can be used to take the
water out of the canals and drain the
cultivated land while the levee around
keeps the water from running back into
the field or clearing.

Away out in the edge of the big Cy-
press swamp 36 miles from the Tamiami
Trail and 32 miles inland from Ft. Myers,
there is a huge development and
a brand-new town called Immokalee.
From this point there is a paved road
seven miles with dead end going directly
into the Everglades, and there is a
large new farm development in prog-
ress there. I was amazed to think of the
tremendous amount of money that was
invested in steam shovels, bulldozers,
tractors and farm equipment of many,
kinds. The only reason they can possibly

hope to make a profit on this enormous :

operation is by producing crops so early
in the year that they will be ahead of
everybody else. I do not know how they
are coming out. Should they have many
more cold spells as severe as we have
just passed through, the chances are they
will not be able to produce as early as
they have expected to.

I want again to urge every Georgia
farmer to plan his crop this year with a
great deal of care and forethought. Na-
tional and world conditions are such that
the most patriotic thing a farmer can do
is to be sure that his farm is as near self-
sustaining as it is practical to make it
and then to grow what he can for the
market.

A farmer will be doing a disfavor to
himself and the country to plunge head-
long into planting crops that he has
neither the capital nor labor to harvest.
The cost of production is going to be
enormous and with war-time conditions,
there is no telling what kind of limita-
tions and controls may be encountered,
neither is there any telling what prices
are going to be or what regulations may
be put on prices by the Government. It
therefore behooves each farmer to plant
his feet on as solid ground as possible in
making all his plans for the coming year.

Easter of 1951 will come very early.
With the severe weather coming early as
it has this time, we may have a sudden
and early spring. All these factors
should be kept in mind in planning for
the 1951 crop.
