VOLUME 32

Editorial By TOM LINDER

It is time for farmers to seriously
onsider the outlook for the months to
yme and make plans accordingly.

No one can foretell just what will
me to pass and we can only plan on
basis of known facts.

When falling prices come it is always
1w material, including farmers crops,

that are first to feel the effect. During

the last few months we have already
een considerable decline in farm prices
hich, if it continues, means a general
epression both for agriculture, in-
hustry and business.

E A new
gins January 20, and no one can foretell
with any degree of certainty what the

ew administration will do.; If: the

- President has his way, we will see tre-
mendous government spending both at

* home and abroad. Heavy government

- spending is highly. inflationary. If the
Administration pursues a course of

spending, then money will get cheaper

_ than it already is and prices will again

go up. This will be especially true of
~ agricultural products that are not in
adjusted supply, or in short supply.

Things which the farmers must buy
to produce crops will not show any sub-
_ stantial decline in the near future for
; the reason that manufactured products
~ are priced by the manufacturer and not
_ by the farmer who uses them. The
manufacturer will not reduce prices
: until the cost of manufacturing his
products begins to decline. It therefore
follows that the farmer who buys man-
_ ufactured products to produce crops
will find himself next fall at'a loss un-
less the prices of farm products take a
a substantial rise.

Under these circumstances, it would

- geem wise for the farmer to plan his
Operations on a conservative basis so

as to use to the greatest advantage

_ labor and equipment that he already

has, while at the same time
cautiously in extending his operations.
Especially is this true of any farmer

who must go into debet in order to ex-
_ tend his operations.

THE FARM INCOME DETERMINES
THE NATIONAL INCOME

tional income will be seven times the
farm income. For this reason, everyone
whether on the farm or in the cities.
whether laborers, white color workers,
industrialists or business people can look -
forward to an income determined by
the farm income. The trouble is that
city people do not understand this and
are prone to think that. lower farm
prices are to the advantage of city peo-
ple. They will believe this and for that
reason, the sentiment from the great
centers of population bears yery heavy
on their Congressmen for legislation to
reduce farm prices and to import agri-
cultural products from foreign lands.

I have before me some opinions by
different people who are interested in
the outlook for agriculture in 1949
which I have picked up at random and
which I quote as follows:

FARMERS LOOK AHEAD

Figure on 1949as the lastof the
Bonanza years. Farmers forty years
old, or older, may never see anything
like the years "41, 42, 743, 744, 745, 746,
47 and 48, while gross farm income
may, and likely will, remain high. Ris-
ing costs of production will cut into
farm profits in 1949, 1950, and probably
for vears.

Tnereasing assaults on farm prices
from labor and consumer groups will
continue. The cost of merchandise
such as farm implements, machinery,

Director King Urges
South Georgia Animal
Diagnosis Laboratory

We have received a very convin-
cing letter from Director George C.
King, of Tifton, expressing the
need for a laboratory for the diag-
nosis of animal diseases for South
Georgia.

Dr., King explains that such a
hospital should be located at Tif-
ton as it is the most central place
and such work could be carried on
by the addition of two veterinari-
ans, bio-chemist and pharmacologist

A laboratory building would, of
necessity, have to be erected at a
eost of $300,000 and $30,000.00 per
year allocated for its operation.

wire, fencing, nails, paints, insecticides,
fertilizer and living costs will be kept
high by high taxes, high wage costs
and high freight rates. Food which
city people do not produce -will be sin-
gled out for concerted. attack.

There is not enough hatching eggs t@
imeet demand. Order your chicks early,
as day-old chicks will likely be highes
in price.

Hogs will probably pay during 1949,
due to feed taking a slump. The grain
crop is larger than the pig crop. At the
present time, all hogs should. be sold
off when thy reach No. 1s.

Beef cattle should about hold their
own, while the estimate is that there ~
will be five percent more cattle in feed
lots January 1, 1949, than a year ago,

Late March and April should see cat-
tle and hog prices pick up, or at least
hold their own.

1949 may be the cotton
chance to establish a base. Acreage
restrictions cannot be far off. Grow
another big crop while the lid-is -
Tf you do not look out for yourself,
one will.

growers last

Grow oats, wheat and rye for winter
grazing and let the hogs and cows gath-
er oats after they are ripe and ready,
for harvest. Remember, the grain
growers ot the Great Plains are grow-
ing more wheat than we can sell and
give to Kurope. Buy your pasture
forage seeds now, as they will not be
any cheaper later,

Machinery supplies will be plentiful,
but all at a higher price, due to high
wages and increased freight rates. Buy,
nothing more than you are compelled
to have.

Corn and feed grains will likely tise
to support levels before new crops com
in. If you are going to need any, buy,
now. Some feeders of hogs and cattle
are holding their own corn and buying
while it is cheaper from those who do
not have storage.
