norable Allen Post, will go
Washington with me. Each

nding lawyer. Each of them

Not only this, but num-
neys have volunteered their
vices to represent me in this
tive of all of these.
umbers of others have gen-
usly come forward with fi-
ancial assistance because they
know that going to Washington
fo defend oneself involves lots

illustrative of the response
d reaction of the people in
s matter:
Atlanta, Georgia
September 27, 1948
Mr. Tom Linder
Commissioner of Agriculture
State Capitol
Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Mr. Linder:
Sometime ago | wrote you
deploring the fact that you
have been indicted by the
Grand Jury of the District of
Columbia, for the offense of
obbying with Congress with-
out having first obtained a li-
cense so to do.
Subsequent investigation
confirms my original belief
that you were indicted for at-
tempting to benefit the farm-
ers of Georgia and America
stabilize prices of farm
mmodities. Had you failed
do this when the opportun-
ity presenied itself I feel that
ou would have been unfaith-
ful to the farmers of Georgia
COMMISSIONER
_ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17,-1948
0 WASHINGTON NOVEMBER 22nd
~-..'__ NUMBER 11 11
- sometime
rs ot other outstanding At-
e and I am deeply appreci- |
_the
whom you represent as Com-
missioner of Agriculture.
in my former letter to you
il expressed a desire to aid
you in some material way
prior to your trial which I
understand is to be held
this year. I then had in mind
that I would try to make you
a small contribution toward
defraying the expense of this
litigation; also that | would
contact some of our mutual
friends and suggest that they
likewise contribute.
in this connection, | am en-
closing herewith check in the
sum of $160.00, representing
contributions as _ follows:
Thomas W. Bryan, LaFay-
-ette, $25; Elbert Forester,
_ Trenton, $25; C. T. McDon-
ald, Braselton, $10; and the
remaining $100.00 is my own
contribution.
I am sure the farmers of
Georgia, upon being made to
realize the huge sums you
will be required to expend for
attorneys fees and other ex-
penses incidental to your de-
fense, will respond by mak-
ing individual contributions
in accordance with their abil-
ity, because after all your ef-
forts resulting in this trouble
were put forth in their be-
half.
Sincerely yours,
(Signed) J. M. C. Townsend
This is a case which involves
constitutional rights of
every American citizen.
I have done nothing that any
American citizen does not have
the right to do. I have done
nothing except what was my
duty to do under the laws.
I have never been offered, nor
would I have accepted, one cent
from any person for lobbying.
Everything that I have done was
in the interest of the farm-
ers and the people of Georgia
and the nation.
This is simply a continuation
\
in November of .
of the fight against freedom of
the press; freedom of speech
and freedom of petition, guar-
anteed by the Constitution. The
same gang that is trying to per-
secute me in Washington is the
same gang that has been trying
to stop me from writing in the
Market Bulletin for a long time.
_It was this same influence that
went to the Governor of Geor-
gia and tried to stop funds for
the publication of the Market
Bulletin. The Governor prompt-
ly and properly told them that
publishing of and writing in the
Market Bulletin was the duty
and responsibility of the Com-
missioner of Agriculture.
They then went to the Post-
master General and tried to in-
erfere with the sending of the
Bulletin through the mails and,
again, they failed. Next they
inspired an injunction in Fulton
Superior Court about which I
told you in an article in the Bul-
letin entitled, Kravitch & Kra-
vitch and Komissars.
In this suit they undertook to
get a court injunction against
me for writing in the Market
Bulletin because I was expos-
ing their un-American activi-
ties. Again they failed. :
This indictment in Washing.
ton is simply another step in
their efforts to prevent a public
official, elected by the people
of the State, from exercising
the Constitutional right to in
form the people, and especial.
ly the farmers. of what is going
on.
It is the uncompromising fight
I have waged on behalf of the
farmers of the State that has
caused me to incur the enmity
of this bunch of mugwumps and
renegades.
As soon as this hearing is over
I will tell you some more about
it.
TOM LINDER,
Commissioner of Agriculture
