those states that an early

ost fell, it became evident
2 great deal of damage had
done. There was lots of soft
in. the 1945 crop.

1is meant a short corn crop
he nation as a whole.

aree weeks ago I made a trip
going one route and com-

of Virginia, North Caro-

elds of corn that had nev-

n the field and the weather
very bad. Much of this corn
sen seriously damaged.

China alone, there are millions
of people who are actually dy-
ing or threatened with death
from starvation. Throughout all
the countries of Europe, the wolf |
of famine howls and many peo- |
ple die while all its teeming mill-
ions are underfed and under-
nourished. |

- The United States, with a
shortage of food, is met with the
necessity of dividing what we
have with those who die from

starvation. The fact of the mat-
ter is, that the people of this na-
tion have very little choice in the
matter. :

The cries of women and child-

ren in other lands, dying from |
want, must touch the hearts of

a civilized people, to say nothing
of those who believe in and fol-
low the guidance of Him who

gave His life on the cross to

seek and to save those who are
lost.

It folisws.
course, that we will divide with

the starving people of the world
as far as we can.

Itis a great pity that the Nat-

ional Administration does not

face this matter squarely and
say that we will divide with these
starving people, as a matter of
humanity.

It is a great pity to put such
an-act of mercy on a mercenary
basis and to talk about loans and
future international transact-
ions when men and women are
dying for lack of something to
eat.

What we do for a starving
world should be done as an act
of mercyas a good Samaritan
who will bind up the wounds of

the afflicted and divide his food

as a matter of

This is the law of recompense

earth were involved in this war, _
white, black, brown, yellow and

red. The nations of the earth will |
pay the price for this great
transgression.

It is of no banehit for anyone |
to try to cast all the blame for
the war on someone else.

The only thing that can be said
is to repeat the words of the Na-
zarene when the woman was ac-
cused before Him and He said:
He that is without sin among
you, let him first cast a stone at

Seed And Hay In Georgia

By R. P. BLEDSOE and U. R. GORE

Georgia Experiment Station

. Soybean hay, when cut at the right stage and cured
_ properly, has feeding value equal to cowpea and les-
pedeza hay. The yield of hay varies from one to three
tons to the acre, depending upon fertility of the soil and
season. Sinee the introduction of Otootan from Hawaii
by C.K. McClelland of the Georgia Experiment Station
. in 1911, Georgia has grown considerable acreage of
soybeans for hay either alone or interplanted in corn.
_ Factors which have prevented expansion of soybean hay
_ production are, (1) scarcity.of seed of hay beans, (2)
planting too late for a full growing season, and (3)

Georgia.
Varieties of Savhicada: For hay, the Otootan. has

long been the leading bean, but its poor seeding habit}

ed and resultant high price of seed has prevented expan-
sion of hay acreage. Gatan is a new variety developed
and distributed by the Georgia Experiment Station
from a natural hybrid of Otootan averaging 15 bushels
a beans and 2.0 tons of hay per acre the past ten years.

Other hay varieties grown to some extent in Geor-
gia are Laredo and Palmetto, w
nematodes and cag be grown on infested land, and hay-
seed. Yellow seed type beans such as Woods Yellow
and Biloxi may be grown for hogging off.

: PerGlizer and Lime. Soybeans do not always re-
. spond to direct application of fertilizers when following |
well fertilized crops in a rotation. The response of soy-
beans to commercial fertilizers is often disappointing.

On thin land a complete fertilizer low in nitrogen may

give the crop 2 bettexstart. The benefit from an appli-

cation of limestone is carried over into succeeding crops.

Soil Preparation. Land for soybeans should be flat
broken - in late winter or early spring. followed by disk-
ing one or more times before seeding to kill weeds and
grass. A firm seedbed, free from clods, helps in Beton |:

: Inoculation. Where soybeans have not been grown
for the past two or three years the seed should be in-
oculated with a commercial soybean inoculation accord-

ulated soil with a bushel-of seed moistened with a so-

_ Cultivation. Cultivation before the plants come up
nd when the plants are small is usually done with a
reeder or drag harrow. The weeder can be used when
young plants have come out of their goose neck
ition and have grown 4 to 6 leaves. The weeder
ould be started late in the morning when the young
lants are not so brittle. Soybeans in rows. are cultivated

interest to the discussions there,
but especially with regard to
plant, insect and animal diseas-
es.

According to government fig-
ures, plant diseases and insect
pests are now causing an annual
loss to crops in this country to
the value of three billion dollars.

This is an enormous amount
of loss for this nation to suffer
every year on account of insect
pests and plant diseases.

The amazing thing brought
out by questioning was this.

Practically every one of these
plant diseases and insect pests
were imported into this country
from foreign nations. 3

It is another case of the work-
ing of the law of recompense. _

We are now paying in crop
losses, three billion dollars per year for
importing things that we sould have
grown for ourselves.

' Just to give you an idea of these in-

sects and diseases which we have import-
ed, Iam listing a few of the more prom-

inent:

Japanese Beetle from toa
European Corn Borer from Prone,
San Jose Reale Insects from China,

Mexican White Fringed Beetle een
South America,

Asiatic Garden Beetle from Asia,
Oriental Fruit Moth from China,
Pink Boll Worm from Mexico,
White Pine Blister Rust from Europe,
Chestnut Blight from Europe, |

~ Boll Weevil from Mexico. |

These are some of the plant diseases

which we have brought into this country

during the present century, in an attempt
to beat the laws of nature by buying what
we should a produced for ourselves.

Soybeans may be used for grazing from early bloom

up to maturity. Many growers use soybeans for hog

feed either planted alone or with corn. The crop Tes-
idue left on the land adds to its fertility.

Harvesting Seed. Soybean varieties that do not}*
hates badly are best harvested with a grain combine
set so as not to crack-the beans. Watch out for cracked
beans, as the beans crack more easily some seasons than
others. If the machine is cracking too many beans reduce
the speed of the cylinder or increase the space between
the cylinder and the concave. The beans and vines
should be thoroughly dry before beginning to harvest.
Soybeans should be cut as soon as pee after ripening
because of shattering.

When the soybeans are to be threshed with a thresh-
er, cut the beans when the seed.in the lower pods are
fully formed and the pods are turning. Raise or remove
the concaves and slow down the cylinder to about 600
revolutions per minute without reducing the speed of

the fan. Small. amounts of soybeans 1 may be threshed out
ina wagon body and cleaned by pouring over a coarse

screen made from hardware cloth.
