VOLUME 29

_ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1946

"Editorial By TOM LINDER

| The OPA has given notice that os
ceiling price on watermelons will be

pe cuced approximately 30 per cent on
the 1946 crop.

The Bowles weevil is not threaten-
ing to reduce any runaway price, due
to any speculative market, because
_ Watermelons were sold under OPA ceil-
ing in 1945.

2 .. The ceiling price that OPA intends

_to reduce is the ceiling price set by
= OPA itself in 1945.

2. . the 1945 ceiling price on water-
a melons was $45.00 per ton until July
Sth. After July 5th, the OPA ceiling

price on 1945 melons was $35.00 per
ton.

OPA now intends to reduce. the
ceiling price prior to June 29th to
$34.00 per ton and after June 29th, to
~ $25.00 per ton.

__ In 1945, Georgia growers received
$6,304,000. 00 for the watermelon crop.

If OPAs plan goes into effect, at

twill take almost two million dollars out
ot the packets of Georgia farmers who
produce watermelons.

The watermelons crop is the largest
truck erop grown in Georgia.

Georgia is the largest producer of
__ Watermelons of any state in the union.
_- This Bowles weevil order is direct-

ed primarily against the watermelon

Yarmers of Georgia.

There are a number of other states
that produce large crops of. watermelons
7 Surely we should be able to enlist the
aid of their representatives and Sena-

~~ tors with Georgia to abolish this out-

~ . Yrageous machine which scems to thrive:

Only on the blood that it sucks from

in the field to produce food for the
== nation.
| Once again, I repeat that the OPA
was designed in the beginning to de-
stroy American agriculture. It-was
the brainchild of the Baruchs, the Hen-
dersons, the Morgans and the Gins-
bergs. Some day this truth will soak
through the minds of those in author-
ity who are in position to do some-
thing about it. :

The Bowles weevil is now robbing

the rankest discrimination against the

Souths cotton crop.
This Bowles weevil, after fatten-

Ing on cotton, has sharpened his teeth

on the pine trees and is now ready to
get into the watermelon patch as soon
as they are. ready to eat.

I suggest that the United States

Senate and House of Representatives

get this Bowles weevil before it and
use some DDT before the watermelon
blossoms come.

They have a wonderful chance to
do this when the bill for prolonging
the life of this Bowles weevil comes
before Congress.

The Mexican boll weevil nqutents
itself with the destruction of the cot-

ton crop. The Mexican boll weevil is

satisfied when he can see the cotton
fields destroyed and the cotton farmer
foreed to grow other crops.

This W. rashineton Bowles weevil in-
tends to destroy not only the cotton
farmer, but the pine farmer, the water-
melon farmer, the wheat farmer, the
hog farmer, the cow farmer
other farmers.

MEETING IN JACKSONVILLE

The a meeting of the Water-
melon Growers & Distributors Asso-

That will be a splendid time for the

growers and others interested in fair

prices for watermelons to take definite
action against the proposed cut in the
watermelon eiling.

It is to be hoped that as many wa-
termelon growers as _ possible from
Georgia, Florida, and other nearby
states, will attend.

If you. go to a store to buy mer-
chandise, you will find that the high
quality merchandise that you bought
before the days of the Bowles weevil
is not to be found in the stores.
