_ There may yet be a surplus of cotton stored in
rehouses but there is a sad dearth of cotton materials on
garments are our favored wear. At this time of the year
hen the pecan tree leaves appear and we know that hot
weather is upon us we used to go down to the stores on
oiles, the calico and nainsook, the percale and seersucker
ovely, fine materials in sweet colors. Where are they
ow? Where are the snows of yesteryear? |
We hear from one of the neighbor women that they
ot in a piecejust one piece, mind youof cotton goods
riests or Taylors and we dash down to find that it
Il disappeared within hours of its arrival. The merchant
ings out three half-yard remnants of dingy stuff from
nder the counter and offers it in case we can use it. We

: SYNTHETIC WEAVES
Phere are some of those synthetic weaves but they
ertainly would not do much toward aprons, sunsuits and
ajamas for the young. We who love our cottons do not
all the sheer synthetic we soused in the suds and it came
out looking like a skin for a contorted snake. The design-
ers have done something for rayon crepe to make it ac-
ceptable to the smart sophisticate. They have made little
black horses to prance on eggshell backgrounds, or perhaps
a Seotty dog. Life-size green palm fronds might look pretty
-a thin, dark girl in the city but that sort of wear is not
wear to the drug store and to the grocers on summer
ornings. It was a painful shock to see a sweet wife and
mother looking at one of these rayon crepes with a design
f the head of Pan, a green bough sprouting from behind
eer was repeated over and over on every yard and I said
voluntarily that I had never expected to see a respect-
able housewife decorated with the god Pan. The salesgirl
misunderstood me, or perhaps had not heard of this pagan
myth, and said: Oh, no, it is not that kind of pan. :
2 _ WE SHALL NOT AGREE
If the textile people are planning to wean us away
om cotton and pin these ersatz materials on us, we shall
ot agree. If it is due to the war we will gladly revive the
Yonfederate tradition of making baby clothes out of flour
we can manage if the mills are making only Army khaki

COTTON
Y Ges
All Commissioners. of Agriculture from the cott n
growing States have been asked to be present or to 1 vr
a letter giving their views with regard to cotton.
Cottton is now in a most critical position due to la
due to the ruthlessness of methods employed aga
cotton. . : os oo
We do not now have any surplus of cotton and will no

visions for the use of cotton in this country instead of 1m
ported substitutes. Be ee
We are now importing enough jute, hemp, flax, rayo
and pulp wood to substitute for five or six million bales o
We must stop this inflow of cotton substitutes and
must have more cotton processing plants, especially
produce heavy, cotton goods. ee
The importation of vegetable oil in the postwar era
must be cut if our cottonseed, peanut and soybean cro
are to be preserved.- - ee
This can be accomplished if the friends of cotton
Congress will get busy on it. Now is the time to do it. D
not wait until we are committed to a lot of secret agree

_ GIVE US COTTON
I have before me an axticle by Edna Cain Daniel whic
is so much to the point and which presents our need or
cotton in such an interesting and personal way, that I am
reproducing it herewith. a
Edna Cain Daniel is writing some very interesting and
instructive articles on cotton and I want to give her eredi
