he 0. P. A. And The War Food Administra in
ix Lower Ceiling Prices On Farmers _
EDITORIALBy Tom Linder:
Last year the O. PAA. ceiling price on sha beans was $7.50
per hamper.
We had a late cold snap and for two or three weeks there .-
re practically no beans onthe market and beans went high.
As soon as beans began to move in quantities, the price
started down. Prices kept going down until large quantities of
Georgia beans sold around $1.28 to $1.30 per hamper.
The Food Distribution Administration came along and put |
{ support price on beans of $1.50 per hamper. But the F. D. A.
quired new hampers which could not be obtained. They also
quired beans to run 80 per cent. U. S. No. 1s. The guaranteed
fupport price with the conditions attached meant less money
tually to the farmer than the $1.28 that the canners were
paying
iad was the canners price. If it had not been for the canners
here would have been no 2 ape at all for the bulk of the bean crop
reorgia.
Fy A. CEILINGS LIMIT FARMERS PRICES BUT DO NOT
ASSURE THE FARMER OF ANYTHING AT ALL
It is important to keep in mind that O. P. A. ceiling prices
ily limit the farmer. They do not assure the farmer of any
brice. While the O. P. A. ceiling price on beans was $7.50 per
hamper, the heavy movement of beans was selling for $1.28 to
51.30 per hamper.
NOW O. P. A. LOWERS CEILING ON VEGETABLES
In view of the fact that O. P. A. ceilings do not constitute
Ly guarantee to the farmer, it is a serious matter for the On EF.
. to lower the ceilings on farm crops.
I have before me a release from O. PA. setting new ceil-
ng prices on vegetables and fruits.
ao CABBAGE PRICES UNDER NEW CEILING
- The new ceiling price on cabbage is $58.00 per ton at coun-
shipping points, based on Texas, California and Florida.
This does not mean that the farmer will get $58.00 for cab-
age. It simply means he cannot get more than $58.00 for cab-
age.
RETAIL PRICES ON CABBAGE
Recail prices on cabbage, according to this O. P. A. release,
om December 1943 through April, 1944, will be 6 to 7 cents
pevnd.
- Jf the same ratio of distributors markups to the big cities
re maintained, the same as it was this year, this would mean
4 the farmer would actually get about $40.00 per ton from
cember through April. In March and April of 1943, the retail
price on cabbage was 10c to 12c a pound as against the 6 to 7
ts per pound fixed in this last O. P. A. ruling.
ILL LOWER PRICES FOR CABBAGE MAY TO DECEMBER
This new O. P. A. release states:
= The new regulation will effect reductions up to 50 per
Gent by bringing the price for the summer months through De-
tember down to 4 to 5 cents per pound.
Tf the retail price of cabbage is reduced t6 4 and 5c per
pound and the distributors profits are maintained at the same

The result was that the only veal support price the farmer

farmer would not get more than $30.00 per ton from ae
December.
OTHER VEGETABLES LIKEWISE AFF ECTED
Most other vegetables are more or less in ie same situ,
that cabbage and beans are.
WAR FOOD ADMINISTRATION AND O. P. A. WORK
TOGETHER |
It should be kept in mind that these lower prices have be
fixed by the War Food Administration under Marvin Jones ut
are announced through the O. P. A. which is subject to
Jones jurisdiction insofar as food crops are concerned.
the $1. 50 support price on beans last year and required n Ww,
hampers with 80 percent No. 1 beans, while the O. 2. A. ceilin
price in Atlanta was $7.50.
It should also be remembered that the War Food Ad Li
istration is the agency which has offered the farmers. $1. 5
bushel for No. 1 sweet potatoes, $1.00 for No. 2, and 75
bushel for other acceptable potatoes. At the time the War F
Administration issued this support price, No. 1 potatoes o
Atlanta market were bringing $3.00 per bushel and No. :
tatoes about $2.25 and other potatoes around $1.50. :
It is evident that Mr. Marvin Jones, under the noliay
pursued by the Admi istration, is. doing the same thing th
-Claude Wickard did. He is simply using his office to dep
farm prices as low as possible.
It is important to remember always that all bure us
Washington are working to carry out policies determine n
the White House. It is no use grumbling at the O. Pp. ae
tration.
The only way to remedy this is for Congress td a is
these boards and bureaus and let the law of supply and demar
control. This will insure food for the people, for our Ar ed
Forces and Allies, and fair prices for farmers.
BEEF CATTLE AND HOGS
The same principle that is being applied to vorctable: a
other farm commodities is also being applied to live stock. of
The government asked the farmers of this country several
months ago to increase the production of livestock of all kinds.
Congress even passed a law providing for farmers to
protected in their prices for the duration and for two yea
thereafter. :
A little thing like an Act of Congress does not mean any
thing in this country when it comes in conflict with the po cy
of the Executive Department. |
I have received numerous letters, telegrams, telephone
calls and visits, telling a sad story about how .the government

Lower Ceiling Prices On Vegetables

were bought as feeders some months ago.
THE FARMER SEEMS UTTERLY UNABLE TO
2 MAKE HIS VOICE HEARD EFFECTIVELY
IN WASHINGTON
f In spite of all that the farmer has endured and
Etiiues to endure, it is evident to every thinking
person that the farmer is utterly unable to make his
yoice heard in Washington.
_ Now they want us in a great International Goy-
ernment.
They are actually advocating that we surrender
part of our sovereign rights to some International
Clique.
If the farmers of America cannot make them-
selves heard in Washington, what chance would they
have to make themselves heard in a great Internat-
ional Government-a government ten times further
removed from them than the Washington Govern-
ment?
- What right does your Congress and Senate have
to commit you to any International Government after
the War when no such offer has ever been voted on
by you and when you have never had an ppportenity
to express an opinion about this?
. You will have an opportunity to express an opin-
jon next year. That will be time enough for Congress
and the Senate to commit you to any World Alliance.
The World Alliance means that the farmers of
America must produce, if they produce at all, on equal
terms with the peon labor of Mexico, Brazil, Argen-
tina, the East Indies and all the islands of the sea.
Are we farmers of America ready to work for
A0c a day and 20c a day? If we are not, then we
farmers of America had better watch our step about
foreign and international alliances and super- gov-
-ernments.
The bigger the pond little fish get in, the more
certain it is they will be swallowed by the big fish.
