We hear a lot of talk from Washington and
from party platforms about improving the farm-

farmers condition without restoring the profit
The farmer must have a reasonable

The farmers are more intelligent, more ex-

The Profit Motive And Capitalism
x (Continued from Page One)
eking to take the profit or capital that by right
elongs to others. 9 |
Tt is not the desire of the highwaymen and
the pick-pockets to obtain capital or a profit that
wrong. Neither is it the desire of the manufac-
turer or capitalist to make a profit that is wrong.
The evil comes from the fact that they seek
dishonestly to come into possession to that which
they bad not rightfully earned. They seek to
take the profit and the capital from those who
-have earned it and to deprive the honest earners
of the wages of their effort. .
ss ss SELF DECEPTION

Those who. say they are opposed to the pro-
fit motive and to capitalism are not honest with
themselves. They really mean that thy would
take the profit and capital from others and di-
vide it for their own benefit.

They are just as much in favor of profit and
apital as anyone else. :

ital from others into their own hands.
a SLAVERY

motive in human relations. That substitute is
plavery. ; .

- _fiven a slave has a profit motive to the ex-
mit of saving his life and having food to eat
ut slaves come nearer being without a profit
jotive than anyone else on earth.

Phe Christian looks for profit in another
fe. The Christian looks forward to the resur-
rection and his reward in incorruptible capital

urance of persecution in this world.

- Remove the profit motive and you have sev-
red connection with the power heuse which
yves men to deeds both great and small.
Without the hope of reward of some kind,
omewhere, sometime, the human race would be
s useless and as worthless as the barnacles on

hip at the end of its voyage.

- Under the Agricultural Adj

d other federal agencies, the farmer is brought
der complete bureaucratic control.
- The Secretary of Agriculture of the United
tates fixes what he calls parity price for farm
oducts. The so-called parity prices are so low
many crops that is impossible for the farmer
o make a profit.
The Commodity
ixed differentials between grades on cotton so
vide that it is impossible for the farmer to get
nything like the price which the Secretary of
Agriculture says is parity. o
