Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am
the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the
burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of

of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a

- stretched out arm, and with great judgments.
Exodus 6:6.

T have before me eight samples of cotton goods from
epartment store in Atlanta, Georgia.
Each sample is a different pattern and a different

= he heaviest sample weighs six ounces to the yard,
he lightest sample weighs three ounces to the yard.

The three ounce eo0ds i is marked $4.98 a yard. This if | |

66 an ounce, or $96 | 56 a pound.
$26, 56 for one pound of cotton goods out of cotton that

The heaviest of these samples weighs six ounces s to the
-and the price is $2. 50 a yard. This j is 41 an ounce, or
6 for a pound.
In these goods, you pay $6.56 for a pound of cotton
s out. of cotton that sold for 20e.
The other samples vary in vee these two extreme
ures.
4 Lf: we average these fioures, we find that these eight

rent kinds of cotton goods are seine for $16.56 a :

rd.

At this rate one bale of satten cost $8, 280. 00eighty-
times as much as the farmer received for growing,
icking, ginning and hauling the bale of cotton.

Forty years ago the general rule was that a farmer

ceived one yard of cotton goods for a pound of cotton.
That. of course, meant common, ordinary cotton goods,

ch as gingham, calico, homespun and the like. /
Nice dress goods cost two or three times that much.
When cotton was 10 a pound, you could pay practically,
any cotton goods from 10c to 40 a yard. | a8

For the sake of argument, lets say that all these eight

pies were worth 40c a yard when cotton was 10 a
n
That ect that the farmer would have to give four
pounds of cotton for one yard of this kind of cotton eoods.
re The average price per vard of se eight samples now
$3.75 a yard.
If the farmer purchased one an of these goods with
ur pounds of cotton, he would have to get 94 a pound
the cotton.

In other words, if the oe today was getting 94 a
ound for cotton, he would only be receiving parity, inso-
ar as these eight samples of cotton goods aresconterncd.

HIS COTTON

To most folks you are just a bale of cotton,
Done up in new burlap and iron bands:
To me you are the April thats forgotten, es
When I held you, some gray seeds, in my hands.

To them who now appraise you as a bale, |
You are so many thousand yards of thread;
To me who came to offer you for sale,
a represent six months of toil for bread.

Some men somewhere with selfish end in view |
Have set a price that makes my loes their gain;

And they had not a care in raising you,
Nor prayed with me for sun and then for rain;
But I have had a joy they cannot know
aM ee with God to make you grow.
Jennie M. DeLoach.

-in Congress and iN ew York talk about. rayon supplanting

cotton as a textile.
They say that the farmer will have to produce cotton

cheaper in order to keep rayon from taking the cott

market.
We hear a lot of talk about labor- -Saving machinery
We hear that labor-saving machinery has made the cos

of production of industrial goods much cheaper. But t

fact of the matter is, that the farmer is producing % a

cheaper than anyone else.

__ If the farmers were paid as imuch to cover cost of pr
duction as industrial cost of production, the world Soul
be hungry and naked within twelve months. Yet they, sa.
the farmer is not producing cheap enough. bak
Well, lets see. If a yard of cloth contains six ounces

of 20 cotton, that is 7/2e worth of cotton in a yard of clo

The 744 worth of cotton in the form of a yard of clot
sells for $8.75.

+ If the farmer actually gave away the Te worth
cotton and did not get anything for it, it could not re

. the price of the pe = cloth more than 7c. The yard 0

cloth would cost $3.6742c made out of free cotton, wher
now costs $3.75 ae out of 20 cotton.
The fact of the matter is that it is high prices of cott

goods that make rayon manufacture possible.

If the price of cotton goods were in line with the p
of raw cotton, the rayon mills would close cow The ,
couldn t operate. :

of raw cotton, the demand for cotton goods would
be so great that the cotton belt could not produce
enough cotton to supply the domestic demand

As Big A Stake In This As The Farmer
In the cotton belt, the farmers ingome de-

Le - Change Of Labels :
If you will go into the stores, you will see
that the brands and labels in many cases have

eation of the O. P. A.
Tf you will take the catalog of mail order
houses, you will see that in many cases the identi-
eal articles cannot be purchased. Many labels and
grands have been changed.
This is because the manufacturers are smart
nough to outwit the O. P. A. me
- When the O. P. A. fixs a ceiling on one
brand or one label, the manufacturers simply
quit taaking that particular brand and put out
a new brand at a higher price. |
- The farmer cannot change his brands. The
farmer still sells cotton. Everybody knows its
eotton. There is no way that the farmer can in-
crease the price that he receives for his cotton.
He is helples#.in the hands of government agen-
ies and the cotton exchanges. ,
The O. P. A. was created for one purpose
only, That purpose was to hold farm prices
own. All the balance of the O. P. A. is ninety-
ve per cent camouflage. If there were no farm-
rs, there would be no O. P. A. The O. P. A. is
he child of Barnard Baruch, Leon Henderson,
Henry Morganthau, Jr., and Ginsburg.
CottonGods gift to Americahas been
erucified on a cross of gold,
Cotton, the greatest food crop and the great-
est clothing crop on earth, lies prone in the de-
ng clutches of the Internationalists.
_ The men and women who till the land
through the long grinding hours of the hot sum-
er sun, are merely pawns in the hands of inter-
ational forces who build their golden calves on
2 miseries of these toilers. |

By Geo. H. King, Director, Georgia Coastal
Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, Ga.

Peanut growers can increase yields per acre
more economically by controlling leaf spot disease
than by the use of any other practice, according to
cooperative experiments conducted by the Georgia
Experiment Station at Experiment, Georgia, and the
Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton,
Georgia.

_ Fifty tests conducted with Spanish peanuts over
a period of seven years show average increases of
over 300 pounds of nuts per acre with the various
treatments used. The results of five tests with Caro-
lina Runner peanuts show an increase of 400 pounds
of nuts per acre by the control of leaf spot.

Hay yields are increased as much as 50 per cent.
Also, due to the fact that the control of the leaf spot
causes the plant to hold its leaves longer, the dusted
or sprayed Spanish peanuts can be harvested from
10 to 14 days later than those not dusted or sprayed,
thus spreading out the time needed to harvest Span-
ish peanuts.

Below are given the recommendations and di-
rections for dusting and spraying as worked out by
the two Stations: :

Directions and Recommendations for Dusting

' Materials*: 1. Conditioned dusting sulphur at least 93 per
cent through 325 mesh, or 2. Copper-sulphur 10-90 (34 per cent

basic copper sulphate 10 parts, and dusting sulphur 90 parts.)
When to Begin: When the first spots appear on the basal

| leaves, usually during the months of June on Spanish peanuts,

June 20 to July 10 on Carolina Runners.
Number of Applications: The Spanish variety requires four
if dusting begins before, and*three if after, June 20; four appli-
cations if rain requires repeating first. (See interval between).
Runner peanuts require four applications.
Interval Between Applications: 10-14 days. If rain occurs

Amount of Material: 15-20 pounds per acre for each ap-
plication depending on the size of the plants and the efficiency
of the dusting equipment. A grower should have 75 pounds of
dust in readiness for four applications if required.

Equipment: Any traction or power row crop duster may
be used for peanuts. A short hood or drag should be used over
the nozzles of the duster.

Cost of Material: 1. Sulphur, $3.00 to $3.50 per hundred
pounds. 2, Copper-sulphur 10-90, $5.00 to $6.00 per hundred
pounds. :

Directions and Recommendations for Spraying

Materials: Commercial copper sulphate and lime to pre-
pare bordeaux mixture. (6 pounds snow form copper sulphate,
2 pounds hydrated lime, to 100 gallons of water.)
~~~ When to Begin: Same as for dusting.
Number of Applications: Same as for dusting.
Intervals Between Applications: Same as for dusting.
Amount of Spray Required: 100 gallons of bordeaux 6-2-
100, are required per acre for each application.
Eauipment. Power sprayer with spray boom for row crops.
Cost of Materials: 1. Copper Sulphate; 2. Lime; 3. Water:
One-half cent per gallon.
* Both of these materials come ready mixed.
