HAPPY anp PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
: TOM LIND E 5 of Agriculture |
Commissioner
Jineteen hundred and forty one years ago Joseph and
journeyed from their home dowr to Bethlehem, the
David. ~ |
Joseph and Mary went back to their native town to pay
taxes to the Roman Emperor.
Palestine.
City of David sits on a little hill, but the stables to
oseph and Mary were compelled to go are down almost
level of the waters of the Dead Sea.
Herv Christ was born, twelve hundred feet below the
velthe lowest known spot in the world.
uring the years that Jesus spent on earth, He traveled all
way from the lowest point on the shores of the Dead Sea to
hest place in Palestine, which was the hill of Golgotha
Christ was crucified. - ae
Christ told the rich young man, Go and sell that thou
and give to the poor. Christ also said, Take up thy
_ and follow me.
So long as the rich young man retained his worldly goods
as impossible for him to get rid of the spirit of selfishness,
ch made it impossible for him to be a true disciple of Christ.
_ Jesus, knowing this, told him to sell all that he had and
it to the poor. Jesus knew that only by the rich young
becoming poor would he be able to become Christs disciple.
This is why Christmas time ig set aside to develop an un-
sh spirit, by giving gifts to friends and neighbors, and es-
lly to little children. .
he real Christmas spirit is a spirit of unselfishness; a
it of love for our friends and neighbors, and a spirit of peace
good will toward all men.
hrist knew that the millions of men on earth would
er accept Himonly a comparative few would ever be His
uine followers. :
Jesus knew that the real disciples would be compelled to
el, possibly in a less degree, the same road of spiritual trials,
ptations and tribulations which He traveled to the Cross.
Therefore, Jesus told the rich young man, Take up thy
s, and follow me. The young man was too weak to follow
ists instructions and the Holy writ records that he sadly
ed away. = i
This Christmas season is the darkest time in the history of
world since the end of the dark. ages. |

the thrones of Europe, has the faith of Christians been Le ;
such a severe test as is the case today. - 2
For hundreds of years untold numbers of devoted Christian.
lives have been spent in carrying the gospel to the peoples of all :
nations. , i ae coe ae
The Christian world today is faced with the harsh reality _
that the people of many nations most active in carrying on the :
teaching of Christianity are engaged in a world-wide war, many
of them trying to exterminate each other. 2
Today real Christians are treading the rock road followi | :
the teachings of Christ. = QUOw RE
Today I would call your attention to the prophetic words ey
of an immortal son of Georgia, Tom Watson. . os
Give us the fortitude, which through the cloud dak
gloom and sorrow of apparent failure, can see the distant
pinnacles upon which the everlasting sunlight rests.
At this Christmas time our beloved country is engaged in
a great war for the protection and preservation of our country
and those priceless rights and privileges handed down to us
through the sacrifice, courage and faith of our indomitable
ancestors. eee Soo
Every patriotic man and woman is, of course, one hundred -
per cent behind our Government. a
All of us are willing an@ anxious to make every effort and
every sacrifice necessary for carrying on the fight to a Vic-
torious peace, for the perpetuation of good government, and
for the preservation of the safety and rights of our people.
Twenty-five years ago, we, with other nations, fought a
great war dedicated to the same purpose.
To Christians and their faith, and to patriots and their
courage, I dedicate the immortal lines quoted above.
l know there are gleaming. pinnacles of Christian faith _
and patriotic splendor to which we humans can attainto which
we must attain. ee ne
I know that the people of America have dedicated them-
selves, their lives and their fortunes, to the preservation of this
nation and its Christian ideals.
Therefore, in the spirit of those who constituted and or-
dained our American Constitution and emulating their example
of trusting in Almighty God, let us say again with that great
American patriot, aes
Give us the fortitude which, through the cloud and
gloom and sorrow of apparent failure, can see the distant
pinnacles upom which the everlasting sunlight rests.
