DEPART MENT 9
TOM LINDER
AGRICULTURE
COMMISSIONER
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 1941.
Number 32
Last Thursday it was my privilege to attend the Geor-
Dairy Association barbecue at Rock Eagle Lake in Put-
pam County.
Phe Hederal Government now has a large tract of land
sstituting Rock Eagle Park. This park is about five miles
i h of Eatonton, Georgia, on highway number twenty-
four, from Milledgeville to Atianta.
The Great Rock Fagie is very interesting and those
10 pass along this highway should take enough time to
rn in and visit this spot. The Great Rock Eagle was made
some prehistoric race who brought rocks from all parts
North America and placed them in the form of a great
ying eagie. .
The voverntent has built a fine lake with wonderful
mping and picnic grounds. They have also built a tower
om which a eon plete view of the Great Rock Hagle can
had.
Last Thursday phere was a delici lous barbecue and some
the best Brunswick stew I ever ate. Several hundred |
irymen and their families were gathered there and very
resting speeches were made. :
We have ift Georgia the climate and soil for a great
fairy state. The amazing thing to me about the talks at
Rock Eagle Lake were the contradictory fac ts brought out.

Mr. W. '. Anderson of The Macon Telegraph, called ate
tention to the fact that Georgia people are consuming a
large quantity of butter and cheese and other dairy products
brought i in from outside the state.
I called attention to the fact that large quantities of
milk substitutes containing coconut oil, detton seed oil, and
other fats, were being shipped into the state. I further
called attention to the fact that the Department of Agricul-
ture was placing withhold orders on these milk substitute
in every case where the Law Department ruled that they,
were in violation of the law. I also called attention to the
fact that the Department of Agriculture was making every
effort to stop bootleg milk and eream from being brought
into Georgia from other states.
Tam informed today that the Federal government has

just purchased on bids, six months supply of:
milk for the Army at Macon, Georgia. This milk,
presumably the lowest-bid, is being delivered at
2. 99 cents for each half pint. This figures 47.84
cents per gallon. The specifications on this milk:
require only 3.5 per cent butter fat.
~ Dairymen who haye been furnishing milk to:
he State Sanitarium at Milledgeville are getting,
as I understand it, 30 cents per gallon for
A 4.5 per cent milk.
Preducers who are can shippers are getting:
around 21 cents per gallon for 4.3 per cent milk.
The wholesale price of milk in Atlanta is 48) Leroy Tizhisey, Screven, Ri. 1, |
cents and the retail price is 60 cents.
I am having applications every week from, Seauty eag-plant plants, 500, ;
ocessers to bring milk and cream into Georgia,
| claiming there is a shortage of milk, At the
time it is my understanding that part of the van:
shippers milk is being sold as a surpius)
Since the government is paying 48 cents for;
3.0 per cent milk and the wholesale price of milk|
in Atlanta is 48 cents, it seems to me that the pro-:
shee ean shippers should be receiving at least
to 26 cents for their inilk, as the law provides that
the producers are to receive one-half of the
Pine price, :
_ The Department of Agriculture is anxious to:
help the Milk Control Board in
possible.
: The cost of maintaining a dairy and produc-|
ing milk is ine reasing and is bound to increase.
still further. It is most important that the pro-:
lucers get every dollar possible out of their milk.
Every applicant for a permit to bring milk ur i
eream into Georgia will be referred to the Direct-: &
or of the Milk ontrel Board and no perniit will Gainesville, 502 fudson St.
be granted unless the Director is unable to pro- -
. e the milk and cream required.

TOM LINDER,

. Since writing the above it has been | shipment. Claude
called to my attention that the Milk Control!
Board will have a hearing on July 28th to con-
r raising the price of milk le per quart in At-,
Janta. If this is done then the price paid to the
preducer can shipper should be not less than 26
to 28c per gallon. |
