DITORIALBy Tom Linder
Last Thursday it was my privilege to attend the
mato Festival at Glennville in Tattnall County. Glenn-
ille is a progressive little city in the heart of original
eorgia. The background of that section is unsurpassed.
_ Only a few miles from Glennville is old Midway where
itton Gwinnett, Lyman Hall and many other noted and
courageous pioneers are slecping beneath the wide- spread-
ing limbs of live oaks.
= Only a few miles from Glennvyille is Savannah, where
Jelethorpe and his little band landed on Yamacraw Bluff.
hese men loved personal liberty enough to risk their lives
In a wild new country to escape English prisons.
Only a few miles from Glenuville is the historie set-
ement where the Salzburgers came seeking religious
iberty.
In no section of Georgia are the fundamental prin-
ciples of religious and political liberty more deeply im-
lanted in thie hearts of the people.
Thirty years ago I went through Tattnall County and
aw hundreds of acres of Sea Island cotton that was worth
hundred dollars an acre. There were hundreds of white
ople and negroes working in those cotton fields. No one
reamed that the day would come when iis picture would

be entirely nee Loday the people of Tattnall Goines,
like the people of almost all the counties of Georgia, are
forced to start a new way of life. They are compelled
develop new crops, and in developing new crops there are
always many mistakes to be made and corrected. This
means that the farmers cannot have as much income dur-
ing these trial years as they hope to have after thorough
experience in growing and marketing these new crops.
The State system of Farmers Markets is also in a de
velopment stage. This system of markets must be made to
handle the new crops which the farmers are trying
produce. The perfecting of Farmers Markets Bisa requires
According to the statistics of the Federal Government
the income of: farmers of America today is lower than the
income of any other substantial group.
. Farm labor is a problem. Farm labor is scarce and the
price which the farmer can afford to pay for labor is entire
ly out of line with prices which labor is receiving in ind i
trial pursuits. - ue
Tt is true that farm machinery has been substituted fo
labor to a considerable extent, but mac hinery that the
farmer buys is the product of industrial plants produced
under high labor costs. The price which the farmer must
pay for machinery is entirely out of line with the price
which the farmer gets for his products. Shifting from labor

te machinery merely heals up the wound in one
place while it breaks out in another.
A great many of the farms in Georgia were
mortaged to the Federal Land Banks when there
was no limit on the production of cotton and when
cotton was selling from twenty to twenty-five
eents per pound. At the time these mortgages
were signed the farmer had a reasonable expecta-

i Today a loan which was reasonable fifteen
years ago is, in many cases, two or three times as
much as the land is worth. The land bank admits
the truth of this statement when it dispossesses a
man who has been struggling along with a loan
for fifteen years and then turns around and sells
the farm for one-third to one-half of the amount
This country cannot long exist if the men and
women who are struggling to pay these mortgages
Congress should at once enact legislation to
reduce these land bank mortgages.
should at once enact laws to put the income of the
rmer on a parity with the income of the other
veople in the United States. :
If we are drawn into this great war which is :
Congress |
ow destroying the old world, food is bound to
ome scarce. There is a tendency now in Wash-
igton to prevent the rise of prices of the food
hich the farmer grows. Every ship will be need-
for carrying on a war and the nation will be
dependent upon the men and women who till the
soil in this country to prevent grave food short-
es among our own people. The men and women
ho live on the farms constitute the most vital
: ply line and first line of defense.
- Let Congress strengthen this vital fortress by|
ediately taking a part of the land bank mort-
age load off the shoulders of our farmers.

TUNG TREES
The growing of Tung trees in the United States
has not yet been proven a success,
The Tung tree is native to China.
in semi-tropic temperatures on mountain sides. Those
mountain sides, like the mountain sides of North
Georgia, are always moist. On those mountain sides
in China terraces have been built by generations of
Chinese, and rice is successfully grown far up the
This is poSsible because of the
abundance of moisture oozing out of the rock forma-
tions just as in the mountains of North Georgia.
But, while the Tung tree requires an abundance
of moisture, it is allergic to acid soil conditions.
this reason, very little of the land in South Georgia,
i North Florida, South Alabama, Louisiana and East
Texas can successfully grow the Tung tree.
plenty of moisture, but there is an acid condition of
the soil in which the Tung tree will not thrive.
In many sections of South Georgta, Florida, Ala-
Louisiana and Texas, where the
climate conditions are suitable for the growing of the
