NO. 29
ATE TRADE BARRIERS MUST GO!
Our national defense program is of vital importance to
man, woman and child. :
The American farmer produces the food and clothing
great multitudes of soldiers and civilian population. We
ependent upon the farmer, Without him we would have
defense.
The American farmer stands ready and willing to back
snation in its hour of need. We must give him liberty to
duce in abundance. We must give him the right of way to
rket. His products must go into every corner of the nation
hout interference from any selfish group. :
In many states laws have been enacted which tend to
vent goods moving freely betwen states. These trade
riers closly parallel trade walls which have been erected
the nations of the world both in spirit and method.
Perishable products must move to market by the most
nomical and expeditious: route. Farmers have realized
\is more and more every day. They have purchased motor
cks to move their own products in order that they could
ce their products into consumption at a price which the
sumer could afford to pay and, at the same time, be prof-
le to the grower. =o
It is possible for the Congress to declare farm products,
en moving in interstate commerce by trucks, a part of the
ional defense program.
Congress can ask individual states to extend this cour-

addressed a letter to Congress asking that this be done.
ONIONS
In last weeks Bulletin I told you how we succeeded in
getting acash sale for approximately six hundred tons of
onions. Since then we have succeeded in selling many more.
Our onion crop will exceed a million dollars. These buyers _
who came down here from Pittsburgh and Chicago did not.
~ know that Georgia could produce such quantities of onions:
of the quality which we have until we sent them samples of
our crop. eg he
| CARELESS DELAY oe
On Saturday, May 24, we loaded a car of onions at
Cuthbert, Georgia consigned to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
This car was ready to move about 8:30 P. M, We called the
railroad employees and asked that this car be moved out
~ by the first train and were assured that this would be done,
~ We traced this car and found that it did not leave Cuth-
bert until the following Monday morning, the twenty-sixth,
and it did not pass through Atlanta until Wednesday at _
10:30 A. M., the twenty-eighth. This ear did not reach Pitts- _
puregh until the morning of the thirtieth. Practically a whole
week was consumed in moving this car of onions to market. _
- Had this car of onions moved by motor truck, it could
have been loaded on the trucks at the field and it would have
been delivered in Pittsburgh the following night. E
