UBSTITUTE COTTON FOR WOOD PUL

EDITORIAL By TOM LINDER

I am in receipt of a letter from nhl

irry D. Wilson, Commissioner of Agriculture
Louisiana, enclosing a bill, House Resolution

mber 99, in the 77th Congress, by Honorable
P. Fulmer, Chairman, Agricultural Committee,
fashington, D. C., which proposes to substitute
tton for wood pulp used in the manufacture of

ies millions of tons of wood pulp every year in.

dition to the vast amount of timber that is being

-1if it is possible to substitute five or six mil-
bales of cotton a year for wood pulp, at a

rice that the farmer could afford to take, this .

strengthen the defense proses more than ah
ing this country self-sustaining, in so_ far
possible.

eu A Otton seed oil is now Anaie: used. ae
exclusively | for human food in one form
another. Cotton seed meal is the best known | eet

2 for dairy cattle and beef eattle.

The cotton seed grown on an acre of aver
cotton land in the south contains more food an

feed value than the same acre produces in cor

wheat. It is easy to see that an acre plante:
cotton, increases our food supplies and, in addi
tion, gives on an average a half bale of lint cottor

An increase in the use of cotton would: di

more to relieve unemployment in Geos thay

anything I know of.

I am asking Commissioner Wilson, ve ton
head Commissioner of Agriculture of Louisiana,
for many years, to take the initiative in getting
meeting of the Commissioners of Agricultt
from the cotton states to urge that this be done.

TOM LINDER,
Commissioner of Agriculture.

Notice ape

during the balance of the year in order that we can g
an idea of the volume of sales made through the facilities
of the bulletin.

Cotton Farmers Add $3,568.230

Georgia cotton farmers re-
ceived an additional income of
$3,568,230 in 1940 through price
premiums obtained from _ lint
produced by planting one-varie-
ty improved seed, the Agricul-
tural Extension Service reported
this week from Athens.

Reports from Georgia counties
showed that farmers who were
members of one-variety cotton
communities received $2,568,230
in. extra profits, while growers
outside one-variety communities
realized an extra income of $1,-
000,000 through use of the same
improved seed. Average prm-
ums received for the quality
lint by single-variety farmers
was 52 points.

Growers of one-variety cotton
produced 54 pounds of lint more
than the average per-acre yield
for. other vaieties, making a to-
tal extra profit in the premiums
received and in the increased
yield of $6.65 per acre. One-va-
riety farmers grew 294 pounds
of lint per acre, compared to
the state farm average of 251

FE. C. Westbrook, Extension
cotton specialist, reports that
there were 195 active one-varie-
ty: communities in 85 counties
Jast year. He says there are 54
new one-variety groups, 33 in
south Georgia and 21 in the
northern portion i
Single - variety organizations
have a membership of 29,421
farmers who planted 386,600
acres in the adopted varieties
and produced 227,118 bales.

- Of the one-variety communi-

past season to receive free class-
ing of cotton from the Agricul-
tural Marketing Service. Mr.
Westbrook pointed out that this
service gave these farmers an
opportunity to have their cotton
classed as to grade and staple,
so as to enable them to sell
their lint at best advantage and
also serve as a check on quali-
ty of ginning.

The coton specialist asserts
that the one-variety program
has been responsible for a big
improvement in the quality of
cotton produced htroughout the
state. Last year, 82 percent of
Georgias cotton crop had staple
fifteen-sixteenth inch and long-
er, compared with only 22 per-
' cent in 1931. Likewise, over 51
percent of the 1940 crop had a
staple of one inch and longer,
in comparison with a little over
4 percent nine years ago. Varie-

variety program possess a staple
length of one inch to one and
one-sixteenth inches. _
- Cotton manufacturers who
have used the one-variety. cot-
ton are well pleased with its
spinning value. The manufac-
turers assert that they desire to
trace cotton of best and

quality, because it
