health-giving value of milk.
This activity deserves the is ad support
person in the state, Commissioner Rob-
Per capita consumption of milk in Geor-
; believed to be far below the average in other |
s of the country. Health specialists say that
en should drink one quart of milk a day and de
rown people at least one pint each.
oc Stars and dairymen are ee
of around. a Sane a day per cow on ae
000 farms in the state. The average milk pro-
ction per cow in Georgia is much lower than
national average, however, much progress is
ng made to improve the quality of milk cows on
farms.. This is indicated by the Govern-
report. which shows that in 1932 Georgia had
000 milk cows valued at $25 a head or a total
59, 0,000, while in 1940, the 394,000 milk cows-
lued' at $35 each or $13,790, 000.
The milk industry is the biggest farm crop
the United States in value it being valued in 1938
t $1,778,000,000; cattle was second, valued at $1,-
,000, 000 and hogs third, their value being a lit-
more than a billion dollars.

Georgia edd the South shoul be the oan
- place. to raise cows. and produce milk. We have a
mild climate that affords long-time pastures; we
_have plenty of grasses that grow well here and |
milk produced from grasses, or eas a green
is high. in food value. 5
Then, too, milk has so many uses. . Its pro-
ducts include sweet milk, butter milk, - butter,
cheese and ice cream and a cook puts milk in many .
foods prepared. If every farmer in Georgia pro-
duced as much milk and butter as his family need-
ed, this would bring a big. increase in the. number
of cows on Georgia farms.
A farmer with a number of eye: enriches his.
land more quickly than the one without any cows.
_ Most dairymen have rich land or highly improved
jand that produces. feed and crops much better
than poor Jand.
The farmer who produces - enough milk and
butter, chickens vand eggs and has a Sous ee
well, :

Commissioner Roberts has been delectods as |
one of the four Commissioners of Agriculture in
he United States to serve with the United States
- Department of Agriculture, in mapping the general
program and co-operative activities between the
state and national departments.
He is the only Commissioner from the South
named on this important committee.
- Commissioner Roberts in accepting the place,
said that inasmuch as the first defense of a nation
is food, that, in his opinion, the committee may be
called upon to assist in. shaping the agricultural
policy of the nation in connection with the pre- 2
paredness program now being put into effect.
