FIELD CROPS AND: TRUCK. CROPS

There is always a temptation for the average farmer to
plant something else beside -his regular farm crops in an
effort to make a little more money. Probably you may
have felt this way and even gone so far as to plant a
truck crop with more or less disastrous results. You see
the trouble is that a man must do what he knows how to
do. Of course we can learn by experience, but it is a costly
school. as

Very few of us realize how much more fertilizer truck
crops require than field crops. Furthermore, when the
vegetables need cultivating and the cotton needs chopping
at the same time, we are apt to chop the cotton and let
the vegetables wait. One of our croppers tried to grow
vegetables in addition to his cotton crop several years ago
with the result that his beans and tomatoes got woefully
in the grass.

Now in South Georgia, you folks who grow tobacco can
work in a winter vegetable crop without confliction, but
our experience is that it wont work very successfully with
the cotton and corn farmer. You should, of course, have
_a family garden and a sweet potato patch and some melons.
But you all know how to grow these, and that is why we
split our farm and let the croppers grow the cotton and
most of the corn, and we grow vegetables, together with

oats and hay crops, leguminous crops to turn under and
some corn. ~ F.J.M.

BACILLARY WHITE DIARRHEA IN GHICKS

This disease in chicks, also known
as pullorum disease, is of vital im-
portance to the poultry industry. As
the name at the head of this state-
ment implies its principle symptom is

a white diarrhea. The mortality of
infected chicks is very high; treat-

tory. Since the disease is trans-
mitted from the hen through the egg,
the proper method of controlling this
disease is to eliminate hens infected with this disease from flocks
that hatch chicks or produce eggs for hatching.

Below is a list of Georgia hatcheries co-operating with State
and Federal government agencies in the control of this disease
by keeping flocks free of Bacillary White Diarrhea infection:

A DEPARTMENT OF OUR OWN FOR FARM WOMEN

Page Seve

Dear Farm Women:

From now on we are to have a department of our own.

Mr. Columbus Roberts, our

new Commissioner, believes

in the good women of our State, and has therefore added

this division to the Department of Agriculture.

Now be-

cause I happen to be your Director, please do not think

of me as somebody far up in the red tape whom you cannot

get to.
I am interested in your pro
for I am a woman.

blems; I am interested in you,
Women should love other women and

they do; they should stand together and help one another
with lifes problems, and we do; they should work to make
life happier and more useful for one another, and they do. :
Tt has been said that town women get so interested in their
own affairs that they do not care for their rural sisters.
This is a mistake, it is not that urban women do not care,
they just get busy as do the rural women and each forgets

the other. But Town Women need Farm Women and

Farm Women need their urban sisters.

In the first place, there is so much wholesome produce
on the farm. and fine preserved goods that the rural woman
has spent her spare moments in making. She has much
the urban woman needs and which, if bought from the farm,

helps.

I have worked with rural: people five years, and I have
seen in that time some of the loveliest bed-spreads, luncheon
cloths, rag-rugs, crocheted dresses and numerous other
articles which, if presented to the public, would sell for good
prices. Why not lets all work together to sell, thus sharing

one-anothers problems in a spirit of love and service?

I

know how splendid it is to be able to sell something and,
with the money received, buy the girls pretty things, which

z : jthey must have to make them appear in good company and
He Ste ee ee hae al look their best; I know what it means to be able to turn
| time and talent into- comforts for the family, so why not

Jlets think on-terms of markets?

_ For the farmers there is a Bureau of Markets, under the
supervision of Mr. Hamilton Ralls, and now we. too, have

a Womens Division in the Bureau of Markcts.

that we shall try to create

That means
Womens Markets to handle

some surpluses. In these markets we want any article made
by the farm families, provided the articles are marketable;
by marketable, I mean the kind of stuff that will be good-

looking enough for people to want to buy and good enough
for them to come back for more.

Since we have already

had calls for preserves, jams, jellies, relishes, I believe you
might start with some one product and work with it until
you know it is good; then strive to keep it uniform that it is

the same every time.

It is our hope, in time, to be able, through the women of
the town and county, to establish Womens Markets in many
places; however, if a market is not established near you,
and you are interested in the plan, write me and I will com-
municate with you or come and help you. Remember, we
must have a splendid article to sell if we want money for it.

If in your section any one thing is being done well, let
me know about it and I'll try to find a market. Remember,

I am here to serve you.

Yours for service,
