Pe
~
I have been im every county in Georgia since | have been Com-
missioner of Agriculture. I have seen every class of farmers, some who
were presneroue and many who were not.
i many sections, new methods of farning have been adopted. The
old slip-shod method will no longer furnish a living for the family. The
towns are full of farmers who followed the old way. In many cases the -
fertilizer bill was half the amount of the crop. No farmer can prosper
this way. This must be stopped and it can be done by growing our fer-
tilizer on the land.
In my travels over the State I have seem cern that would produce
forty to fifty bushels per acre and in an adjoining field corn that would
produce only ten to fifteen bushels per acre. The only difference being
that the better corn followed winter legumes. The cost of the seed and
work was only Two Dollars per acre. The best legumes to plant are
Vetch and Crimson Clovr for the Northern half of the State and Aue-
trian Peas for the Southern half. Twenty pounds of Vetch and _ ten
pounds of Crimson Clover are sufficient for one acre, and thirty pounds
- of Austrian peas. Unless the land has keen planted to legumes in the
past it is important that the seed be inoculated. The inoculation can be
_ bought from the Department of Agriculture for oe cents per
acre or One Dollar for five acres.
Wf every farmer would put in a few acres of iegamee this winter ~
and follow with corn next year, Georgi would have corn to spare.

Conamiseioner of Agriculture.

Screw worm flies deposit their eggs on cuts, scratches, dog bites, a
ear marks, castrations, tick bites, navels of young calves, or other in-_
juries of animals. The eggs hatch in about two to four hours and the
young maggots feed on living tissues of the wound. In about four days
the maggots become fully developed and drop tothe soil for pupation =
and transformation to screw worm flies. If wounds are not treated
screw worm flies continue to deposit eggs on them. In such wounds we
find screw werms of different sizes and ages, and as the worms develop
the wound becomes larger and larger. . : :
Sometimes it is not an easy matter to see screw worms in a wound.
They crowd into small pockets with only their posterior ends exposed.
When a wound has a bloody discharge and is accompanied by a hard
swelling, we suggest that the treatment for screw worms be used. Use
an oil can or rubber syringe and inject benzol into the wound, or pour
it into the wound. Allow it to remain a few minutes and them add more
benzel to replace that lost by evaporation. Since benzol kills slowly
and leaves the wound so that it heals promptly, it is important to take
plenty of time in treating the animal. After treating with benzol, re-
move any worms that come out easily. Do not probe the wound and
. cause bleeding. It is better to leave the dead werms in the wound. Do
not cut off the ears of animals or rip open weunds. It is not necessary to
make a heroic treatment. After the worms are killed with benzol, apply
pine tar oil i in and about the wound. The Pine tar oil repels screw worm
flies and promotes healing of the wound. In experiments conducted ov-
er a period of years by the Bureau of Entomology, U. S. Department of
Agriculture, this treatment was found to be more effective and more ec-
onomical than any of the hundreds of kinds tested. For several years it
has been in general use by ranchmen in the Southwest. Thereis no need
for t the stockmen to try or experiment with other materials for a cheap--
or or more effective treatment.
x
The following recommendations are given: a
Examine all your Tivestck for. ods of different linda
and be sure to look for ear ticks and screw worms in the
ears. S
oy
Provide a small pastine where Suiits infested with screw
worms can be treated a
Uae benzol i in wounds te kill screw worms and then ep
pine tar oil = and abeut wis waunds.
Fi
Some amimals infested with screw worms will need the
services of a competent veterimarian. The. location ef the
wound and the value of the animal will sug geet when to
call a local veterimarian, ,
x
Sprays te keep flies away from animals, er dipping ef asic
mals to kill screw worms in wounds are not recommended.
De net ear mark, dehorm, brand or castrate any animals
during warm weather. When eoratches or cute are found om
animals, apply pine tar oil te prevout imfestations of screw
worms. ;
7. Burn the carcasses of all animals oe and Secesisiy
thore dying with screw worms ia wounds, Dig a tremch
near the carcatse, make a fire of wood in the so and
ten the aninead on te the me ef burning Wood.
