GEORGIA FARMERS FORCE GOVERNOR TO: RELEASE FUNDS
One Issue of Market Bulletin Lost Because Of Funds Being Withheld By

-.Governor For Political Reasons.

Wednesday, August the Eighth, one week after the setae of
all correspondence in the August 2nd issue of The Market Bulletin be-
tween myself as Commissioner of Agriculture and Eugene Talmadge,
Governor of Georgia, the farmers of this state forced the Governor to re-
lease $9,000.00 of this departments legal appropriation.

In order to save his face Governor Talmadge had State Chemist Clark

to withhold the funds necessary for the operation of the important. func-

tions of this department, including the publication of The Market Bulle-
tin he finally consented to release one third of the quarters SOneISHDE
budget.

Therefore, I am glad to state The Market Bulletin will continue to be

_erners idea of the only way to

lried en as best we may with our fealtcd accreprinick: es

Now that the matter is settled, at least temporarily, we may winnck at
the net results of the Governers attempted dictatorial methods, aimed
primarily at assisting his former Secretary, Tom Linder, im his campaign
against myself for this important office. First it is apparent that the Gov-
ermor cannot have the best interests of the Farmers of Georgia at heart
except when these interests coincide with his own political ambitions. He
was willing to stop the Bulletin, completely wreck the entire Agricultural |
Department, force the cessation of work being done in the protection not |
only of valuable live stock throughout the state, but human lives as well, in
order to satisfy his insatiable greed for power. But there was one thing too
powerful for him. The influence of the Farmers of Georgia! And it is to
you that the real credit for this victory belongs.

As an amusing but truthful commentary on what actually happened |
we reproduce the following editorial from The Brunswick Ga. Pilot of

se ed nd
week. Here we have been turning eat burnimg essays om the sinte of the state for many
weeks, some of ws oussing Eugene Talmadge an#@ others reviling Claude Pittman with the
net result, go far as we epm see, that both these gentlemen are goimg serenely upen their
way, running for governor, much the wame as if we had been fishing ali during the cam-
paign. But now comes a new Richmond im the field, in the porsom ef G. C. Adams, occw-
pying the rather obsoure niche as Commaissiencr of Agriculture and publishing his much

Mr. Adams writes one picee im the Market Bulletin which he himself eontenils was not
am editorial attempt, and le and beheld, the Tsar of Telfair, semefimes kmown as the
Maharajah ef MoRee, turns and rums fer the first time im his hectic eareer. True, the
teeuble occurred while all the state treeps were in Alabama and Florida in camp and they
were net immediately available for martial law and a general throwing ef people out of
jobs, but be that as if may, Gevernor Talmadge bowed te the power of the little Market
Bulletin in complete and abject surrender. You will remember Commissioner Adams fired
a man named Clark in his department, Mr. Clark turned out to be one of the Taimadge
Trumpetergy and the Governor, running true to form, stepped all of the apprepriations te
the Department of Agriculture until Clark should be reinstated. This Adams refused to de
and wrote the farmers a letter im the Market Bulletin advising them of the situation and
reminding them they would get no more Bulletins because the departments had no funds.
No sooner was the Bulletin generally distributed ever the state than Mr. Clark pops up
and resigns, leaving the way clear fer Governor Talmadge to reinstate the appropriations
and continue the Bulletina.

Now, as Mark Twain ence said, if we ean get ten or twelve good men te go in with us
and believe that this resignation was Clarks own idea we might believe it, but we are un-
able to believe it just by our = self without outside help. It leoks more Itke the Gev-
attempt te save his face in a situation where he found
himself behind the eight ball. He was able te get rid of the former highway board by
stepping all appropriations because there were a large number of people over the state
that did not like the highway board anyway beeause the paving @id not go by their hemes,
but nobody had any quarrel with the Market Bulletin, everybody got it and got it free,
whieh was a different matter. Mr. Clark says he quit: because Adams wag holding up the
funds for political purposes. Everybody knows when Governor Talmadge refused te ok. the
budget Adams had ne funds to hold up for any purpose whatever. The fact remains that
the Governor lost one game at last and lest it when he called the signal fer his favorite
touch-down play, the impounded appropriation shift, We have te salute Mr. Adams, of the
agriculture department, as the greatest editorial writer of hig time, the only man who
ever broke up that particular play.

The farmers of Georgia will net be denied on September 13th.

G. C. ADASIS, Commissioner of Agriculture.
