PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS _
_ATLANTA, GEORGIA. THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 1934,

_ Last week Ihad a call to go to Tifton-to meet with the people
to discuss the future of a large number of farmers: whose crops
had been devastated by the excessive rains. Mr. H. K. Ramsey,

my Chief Fertilizer Clerk, and I went immediatly to the scene
_of the disaster.

About one hundred farmers from the stricken area. of the
; County along: with Mr. M. S. Patten, the Representative, Mr.
~. B. Culpepper, the County Agent, Mr. Enoch Bowen;::one of

the largest farmers of South Georgia, and others: met. us at the

_ court house for a frank discussion _ of the deplorable ceeeo
existing there.

After hearing first hand descriptions of the gloomy outlook

from the farmers themselves we adjourned to make a personal
Inspection of the crops. It had rained nearly forty days with-
eut. any opportunity of getting into the fields for work. We
found about one third of the county in almost total ruin.
| Their major crops of cotton, tobacco-and corn were past re-
_ demption. The cotton and corn were very small, yellow and red
with grass hiding them from view. The tobacco roots had
soured and: rotted with the best leaves dead: to the top. Most
of these people will have no crops at all to gather. Others will
vhave hardly: enough to. pay for the gathering..
Most of these farmers had seed loans from the Government,
-and had planted early with the best prospects for. years. They

had begun in high spirits hoping to be able next year to tote
their own skillets. .

On returning: to Tifton, I-sent.an urgent. wire to Washington _ |

asking that this disaster share in liberal help immediately

along with the drowght-area of the West. My telegram was fol-

lowed by others from Tifton. Their loans cannot be repaid: this
year nor-can. they have foed and raiment without. prompt ac-
tion. Help must come now.

We went into other sections of South Georgia traveling 800 4

-miles and visiting thirty counties. Many fields: were barren as
deserts. Fhe boll: weevil is the worst since he first came: to the
state. | gathered my pockets full of forms, and every one with ||
-a grub: Very Tittle cotton we saw anywhere was even up to |}

normal. I. de not think. that more than 75% of a normal yield

of cotton is possible in the state under average conditions from
now on.

We found one bright: spot on our trip. We attended Mr. W.
B. Weatherlys Big Pole Angus Livestock Show near Cochran. |
I would count this the finest herd and one of the biggest, east |

.of the Mississippi. Some two hundred spectators attended this

show representing many branches of mdustry. His -wife and

-daughters: served a sumptuous barbecue with meat from their
farm. without any Western Steak.

When more of our farmers heed the example of Mr. Weath- 3
erly, Col. Hutchinson, Dr. Hoke and President Roosevelt in the

livestock industry, Georgia will cease to suffer from-drowned
crops, that come up with rainbow promises.
