It is encouraging to find such a keen interest in the
aprovement of our dairy industry. I see no reason why
eorgia should not develop this industry until it would

lead all the other states in the Union.

Our surplus milk is a hindrance to the further de-

velopment of dairying in our state at present. I am do-

g what I can to foster the building of more creameries
he state. I have lately visited one of the best farmers
cooperative creameries in the state at Washington, Geor-
gia. This is owned and controlled by the farmers of Wil-
ses County. The profits earned since it was established

five years ago have paid all expenses, paid for the plant.

nd has always paid the farmers good dividends in giving
1em a constant and satisfactory market for their dairy

_ Many farmers in this section of the State have sup-
_ ported their families and made their crops from the sale
_ of cream. I talk to many of them, and without an excep-

n, find them pleased. They said they did not know
hat they would have done without this industry in their

IERIES IN GEORGIA

communitythat it had supplied them with the necessi-
ties of life this year.

There are several other good creameries in the state,
but the one at Washington seems to set a good safe ex-
ample for other prospective establishments. If we had
a good creamery in every section of the state, we would
hear nothing more of surplus milk that brings down the
average prices so low that dairying has suffered very se-_
riously in the way of low income. In fact, the dairying
industry cannot survive the low prices for products and
the high prices for labor and feed. We hope to see cream-
eries built in Carroll, Hall and Calhoun Counties. _

__..._ Some of the best citizens of the state are behind this_ S

movement. Let the'dairymen.of the state wake up to the
fact that before dairying can come fully into its own, we
must find a profitable way to absorb this surplus milk.

There has been some effective work done by the
Department of Agriculture in creating a sentiment for the
building of cheese factories. These factories require but
a small outlay of money, and will aid also in the absorp-
tion of some of the surplus milk.

G, C. ADAMS, Commissioner of Agriculture. 3
