OUTBREAK SCREW-WORM FLIES ON DOMESTIC ANIMALS
In
SOUTH GEORGIA |
____ Attention has been called by the State Veterinarian that there is a serious
menace or disease that is very prevalent over the State, especially in South
_ Georgia Counties, causing severe losses among domestic animals from an un-.
_ precedented infestation with what is known as the Cayor Fly or Screw-worm
Fly. The State Veterinarian has prepared some good information on this sub-
ject, which is given herein and, if complide with accordingly, serious losses
and the spread of this infestation may be averted.
This fly, of the blow-fly family, lays eggs on carcasses of dead animals
' and in the wounds on the bodies of living animals. In one to eight hours after
the eggs are layed, they hatch out minute larvae or maggots, known as screw-
worms. These maggots invade the carcasses of dead animals, or bury them-
Selves in the tissues around the wounds in the living animals.
ea a ; |
Since these screw-worm flies breed in carcasses of dead animals, the.
easiest way to prevent their reproduction and spread: is to see that no such
carcasses are left exposed to this pest. Every person in the infested territory
and in the adjacent territory should make it a point to see that all dead ani-
mals are burned as soon as possible after being found. Under the Georgia
_ laws it is a misdemeanor to fail or refuse to dispose of the carcass of any dead
_ animal or fowl within three hours after such carcass has been found and notice
of such has been given. (See: Section 485; Volume 2; Georgia Code of 1911.)
Watch for wounds, scratches or abrasions on the animals. When wounds
are found to be infested with these screw-worms or maggots, they should be
injected with 90% commercial benzol to kill the maggots. Remove as many
maggots as possible from the wound and apply an antiseptic powder. Coat the
wound and its margins with a heavy pine tar oil to repel further attacks by
_ the fly. Repeat this treatment at frequent intervals. Do not operate on any
animal unless absolutely necessary and then take extreme precautions to see
that flies cannot come in contact with the wound. In severe cases of infesta-
tion, the local veterinarian should be called.
SUMMARIZING:
Cayor Fly, or Screw-worm Fly, bluish green in color, larger than the house
fly, with yellowish or reddish colored head and three broad blac!
stripes on the body between the wings. They mature within a few da:
after being hatched and begin laying. Son
EGGS on decayed animal matter and in wounds of live animals. Under
_ favorable conditions the eggs hatch in about one to two hours into the
Larvae, or screw-worms which penetrate into the decayed carcass or
bury themselves inthe tissues of living animals around the wound in
which they are hatched. The larva or screw-worm matures in about
four days and then drops to the ground where it buries itself, forming
over its body a hard shell and becomes the
PUPA which, after three or four days, breaks open and there emerges
the CAYOR FLY, or SCREW-WORM FLY. When conditions are fav
orableheat and moisturethe whole life cycle is complete in less
than four weeks time. 65 ae
ANIMALS ATTACKED:
No animal is immune from {the attack of this fly. Any wound on a livin
animal or the carcass of a dead animal is suitable as a breeding place
for the Cayor or Screw-worm Fly. (ie
SYMPTOMS:
Wounds infested are usually swollen and discharge a thin bloody or yel-
lowish liquid. =.
CONTROL:
Burn carcasses of all dead animals, Treat daily all infested animals, |
The Secretary of Agriculture at Washington, D. C., has given Swift &
- Company, Moultrie, Georgia, and White Provision Company of Atlanta, Geor-
gia, and possibly other packers of which we have not been advised, a maximum
quota of pigs and sows to purchase each week. As these are already indications
that farmers may offer for sale more than this total number weekly, it is neces-
- sary that these packing houses get on a plan of not receiving any pigs or
sows, except on a basis of a permit, which they will issue through their Live-
_ Stock-Buying Department upon application. This means that before any one
delivers pigs or sows to either of these markets on the Government plan, they
-. must first write, phone or wire to them for 2 permit, and same will be issued
ee advising the farmers on what day they will receive his hogs.
__ THE WAY TO MARKET YOUR HOGS ON THE GOVERNMENT MARKETING PLAN |
The ebject of this article is to caution farmers to comply with this plan,
as I believe it will greatly help in handling such hogs with the least amount:
of trouble and expense. Aopen
The Government has ruled that these packers will not be allowed to tak
on any pigs and sows from speculators, but only from the hog raisers them
selves, who have raised the hogs, and they are warning speculators not to t1
to deliver any pigs or sows on this plan, as it will be an unnecessary expense
to them in trucking their pigs and sows to the Market. Nae
