7 COMMISSIONER =

PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D., JONES, DIRECTOR.

STATE CAPITOL |

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1931.

BACK IN THE OFFICE.

_ Yesterday, Monday, I spoke at Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County;
_ Decatur, DeKalb County, and Cartersville, Bartow.County. At these
three meetings we had tremendous crowds. About nine-tenths of those
present. were farmers. You could tell it by their sun-burned faces
and hard hands.

At all of these meetings they were practically unanimously in
favor of the Long plan of discontinuing the planting of cotton for 1932,
and each meeting went on record as advocating this plan.

Last week I spoke first on Sunday, the 23rd, to an audience of

_ approximately 1,500 people at Allgoods Church in Paulding County,
os Oe pe vsaniits of Georgias discontinuing the planting of cotton
or ;

e Then I talked to the farmers. at Thomaston, Upson County; Tr'\-

_ botton, Talbot County; Dawson, Terrell County; Macon, Bibb County,
and Mr. J. O. Wall, Representative from Putnam County, filled the
engagement for me at Camilla, Mitehell County, which I could not fill
on account of the conflict with the meeting. at Macon.

Friday, Mr. Wall and I went to Cordele, Crisp County, and Douglas,
in Coffee County. On Saturday we went to Statesboro, Bulloch
County; Swainsboro, Emanuel County, and in the afternoon to Dub-
lin, Laurens County, and we addressed overflowing crowds at all of

_ these places. :

This finished the speaking engagements for last week.

I wish that. some of the opponents of this Long plan could have
been present at some of these meetings: If they had, they would have
realized that the farmers of Georgia can get together over a proposi-
tion. Thy would realize also that this is one plan that the farmers
of Georgia want put over.

Not only do the farmers of Georgia want the planting of cotton dis-

continued in 1932 but the farmers of Texas, Mississippi, South Caro-.

lina and all the cotton-growing sections of the South are tired, tired
giving away their cotton and cotton seed and want to adopt this
plan. ;
They realize that this Long plan of discontinuing the planting of
cotton in 1932 is the only answer to the 9,000,000 surplus bale talk
that we have ever before us. Personally I do not believe that there is

any 9,000,000 bale surplus of spinnable cotton. There is some old

_ dog-tailed cotton in New Orleans that has been there for 15 years,
- and it has been counted every year as part of the surplus. The only

way to call the bluff about the surplus is to discontinue planting
cotton for one year..

The farmers of Georgia thoroughly realize that they have a years

work ahead next year to really get ready to farm and live at home
and board at the same place.

Thursday at noon.I will speak at Rockmart, Polk County. Friday
I will speak at Milledgeville, Baldwin County, at 3 oclock in the after-
noon. Mr. Wall will be with me. After filling these engagements the
al Aya tour which I have made will just about have covered the
state.

Mr. J..O. Wall will speak at McRae, Telfair County, Thursday morn-
ing at 11 oclock. Mr. Wall is the leader of the farm bloc of the
House .of Representatives.

The way the farmers of Georgia have met me with open arms anc
loving embraces, a great many with tears in their eyes, would touch
a heart of stone.

The message that I gave to you last week, to petition your Governor
if you are in favor of this plan, to call the extra session, has bee:.
answered in unmistakable tones.

Keep it up.

On my trip through South Georgia I noticed that cotton has alread:
been picked in some of the fields. In other fields cotton is practicall:
all open. A great many farmers are ginning their cotton. Some arc
compelled to gin it. *

Do not gin your cotton if you can help it.

Mr. Wall, whom I have mentioned above, runs three large gins
Realizing the condition of the farmers, he has opened up with $1 a
the price per bale for ginning. Cant some other ginners follow suit?

In South Georgia cotton seed is bringing $8 and $9 a ton. Th
seed wont pay for the ginning, bagging and ties. Some of-the farm
ers toldme that they had to carry a chicken along to the gin to pa
the difference after letting the ginner have the seed!

Hold your cotton! Hold your seed!

Something definite is going to develop from this. I hope th
farmers will be in a position to get the benefit of the rise.

While I was writing the above article I received the following poe
from Mr. Willy Lamberth, of Montezuma. I am publishing it as it;

BACK IN THE OFFICE
-(Continued from Page One)

fully describes the plight of the farm< -

ers today:
A FARMERS THOUGHTS

We have worked this year from dawn

till dusk
While other people played,

And now theyre taking all our crops

Our hopes are almost dead.

Our cottons worth but five cents,
Thats all the buyers give;

We cannot pay our honest. debts,
And dont know how to live.

We cannot see very far ahead,
What does the future hold?

Will our troubles then have fled
Or will we be hungry and cold?

Will our government lend us aid
To help us carry on? ae

Or will they sit back in the shade
And let us suffer alone?

Our wives are slaving on the farm,
Our childrens feet are bare,.

And if our tables are without food,
Does anybody know or care?

And those men we tried so hard
With our votes to please,

Would they have us honest men
Or a band of ruthless thieves?

Can the farmer remain
The backbone of the nation?

Can we have any honest thoughts _
When threatened with starvation? |

Is our usefulness nearly oer,
We tillers of the ground?
Will we ever reach the shore,
Or must the farmer drown?
