CHICKENPOX IN POULTRY
If chickenpox was prevalent in the
poultry flocks in your community last
year, you will do well to vaccinate
your pullets during the month of Au-
gust. Vaccination against chicken-
pox has proved quite effective and has
often avoided discouragement for he
better poultrymen. |

tions have been doing some very con-
structive work on the use of virus in
successfully. vaccinating pullets against
this infection. If the treatment is
given to the pullets while the weather
is still fair, and before the pullets|
have fully matured, their growth and
development and the time of coming,
into egg production will not be affect-
ed very materially. :
In some states the Agricultural Ex.
periment Stations are preparing the
material for vaccination and poultry
breeders can obtain the material
through the Experiment Stations. If
the station is not preparing this ma-
terial, in most cases the poultry or
veterinary department of the State
Agricultural College can usually refer
poultrymen to reliable laboratories
from which the material may be ob-
tained.
WHITE CORN OR YELLOW
CORN FOR, GEORGIA
Results of Feeding Tests by Georgia
Experiment Station favor Yellow
Corn But With Proper Sup-
plemental Feeding Difference
is Economically Overcome.
In recent feeding experiments with
fattening beef steers the Georgia Ex-
grown to a comparatively small ex-
periment Station has secured some
information regarding white corn and
yellow corn that has aroused con-
siderable interest. The results seem
to indicate that yellow corn is superior
to white corn under certain conditions
but this does not warrant the exclu-
sion of white corn from feeding.
In the first place yellow corn is
tent at present in Georgia. This is
due partly to the fact that white corn
is \breferred by most people in the
South for human consumption. The
varieties of white corns commonly }
grown in Georgia seem, to give heavier
yields than do the varieties of yellow
corn that have generally been grown
in the state. Tests at the Georgia Ex-
periment Station over a long period of
years show that the best yielding
varieties of white corn will usually
produce about 15 per cent more than
| the best varieties of yellow corn under
the Same
conditions. For several

low corn that is as well adapted to|:
Georgia conditions as the best white
corns. Progress is being made but the
a
tests with steers was western grown
cand contained more moisture and less.
dry matter than the Georgia white |
corn. It has been found that when
yellow corn is grown under Georgia
conditions it usually has approximate-
ly the same moisture content as white
corn similarly produced. Allowing for
|this difference it was found tyat the |
steers fed white corn had actually
consumed more than those repeiving
yellow corn. .
The two lots of steers were given
the same feeds except that one lot re-
cived white corn and the other lot
yellow corn. Both lots received an
allowance of 2 1-2 pounds of cotton-
seed meal and 6 pounds. of cottonseed
hulls daily during the test and all were.
allowed free-access to a mineral mix- |
ture. In this connection it. may be
stated that tests have shown cotton-
seed meal to be one of the best and
the cheapest of the protein supple-
ments to be fed with corn or other

ceiving white corn in the particula;
ration used in the test began to ee
off feed and did not make as rapid
gains as they had done up to that
time. They began to show
lameness fand swelling of joints and
walked rather unsteadily. Undoubt-
edly these undesirable results were
due to the fact that white corn is de-
ficient in- vitamin: A.-It has been
found that although low corn cor
tains sufficient of this vitamin for the
animals needs there is almost none
it in white corn: So far as. known is
is the only point in which yellow. corn:
is suprior to white corn. 2
A brief summary of the coe
turns shows us that for the 112 d
feeding period the steers receivin
yellow corn brought a return of
about 96 cents per bushel on the corn
fed, aiter:; deducting: the cost of. oth f
feeds but not. allowing for labor or
other expenses. - Lhe = returns: from
white corn were only about 85
per bushel. When we estimate what
the returns per bushel would have
been at the end of the first 12 weeks
of the feeding period (84 days) we
find thiat. the yellow corn brought
return of $1.01 per bushel as compar-
ed with 94 cents for the white corn.
The above figures show that a 16
week feeding period does not pay as
well as a shorter period of 12 wee
This is especially so when white c rm
is being fed. Because of the deficiency
of white corn in- vitamin ATR is
commended that cattle using it be
lowed fresh green pasture or a
quality of green-colored hay. T
products contain the missing ee
and there seems no reason to belie
die corn when fed. -with \ them,
case such pasture or hay is not av
able it is advisable not to feed

profit would have been made an :

these steers would have increased the
value of the corn they received
