ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1981.
Will We Help?
There has been a great deal of agitation about the use of cotton
in place of jute. An investigation made in the United States has shown
that jute takes the place of three million bales of cotton right here in
our country every year. If we had an additional demand for three mil-
lion bales of cotton next week, I believe the price would go up five or
ten cents per pound immediately.
- Jute bagging that covers cotton takes the place of 280, 000 bales of
_ cotton. Cotton bagging is stronger and a better oes for conn:
than than jute. :
~~ A good many of the mills have stated that they are ee to.
aly adaitional price for cotton wrapped in cotton bagging. This ai
tional price would be given to take care of the difference in the weight
of the jute bagging and cotton ageing, weigh is approximately nine
pounds per bale.
The ginners of Georgia and of all the patton growing states will do
a good deed for the cotton growers and their customers if they will order
cotton bagging instead of jute.
This morning I received a letter. from Mt. es Georgia, Mating
that a man giving his name as J. W. Holt had been going around the
fe community of Clarkesville, Georgia, buying up chickens and farm IOs.
- duce and giving some more rubber checks,
Watch out for this man!
- You do not have to take a checks dntir you find out wheltige Orr
not it is good. Telephone lines to banks and places of business are
plentiful. Automobiles pass every few minutes. A buyer will wait for
- you to find out about his checksIF IT IS GOOD. He will be in an
_ awful hurry and not able to wait for you to se out about it if he knows
see it is not good.
: On July 3rd, I received a letter from J. L. Budreau and Company
vet Savannah, telling about one Mr. A. B. Hattaway of Macon, Georgia,
who had been buying up farm produce over the country and giving bad
checks. This party finally moved to Asheville, North Carolina, operat-
ing under another name, but was brought back to Macon on a war-
rant. He stood trial in Macon but came clear, he was then re-arrested
-and sent to Savannah, where he was convicted and sentenced in wee
City Court.
es At the present! session of the Legislature a bill has been iurcddead
: regulating the commission merchants and the cooperative associations in
= the State of Georgia.
We have a lot of fly-by-night commission merchants who have
an office and advertise themselves as merchants. Get the farmers pro-
duce to sell and settle with them as, they please. After a good many
onints begin to pile uP these fly- by-night boys wee fold their

tents and steal away to go to another town where picking is good and 2
fresh. Farmers are cheated daily by such methods.
Most of the States of the Union have a commission merchant law.
Any company, or organization, or cooperative association, handling the _|
other mans property should be amenable to some State Department eg
and should have to file quarterly reports with that Department.
This law will not hurt any honest organization that is handiing the: 8

other persons goods.
gia for a good many years.
Should this bill pass at the present Legislature it will be a safe-
guard for the farmers of Georgia.
with their customers? If complaints were to be filed against any of
the organizations handling someone elses property these reports would
_be a safeguard to the organization and also to the pnIDEE as a! would
show who was wrong on the complaint.
There has also been introduced at this session of the Legislature,
a SEED BILL. Georgia is the only State in the Union that has no
seed law. There is a good :deal of cheating in Georgia by different par-
ties selling seed that are not of the proper variety, not of the proper
germination and mixed with foreign grasses and weeds. ae
The intention of this law is to give some security to the purchaser a
of seed at the time he buys them so that he will not have to wait un-
til the crop is mature for him to find out what he planted. 4
This seed bill will not hurt any seed salesman who sells what he ~
recommends and guarantees.
be, or mixed with ali kinds of noxious wed and erass seed.
Why shouldn't this seed bill be written into law?
I have meee ea a good many letters from. dver the State compl nine ae
about the drought in the different sections of Georgia. I have received =
several letters suggesting that we have prayer for rain.
This morning my old college chum, Dwight Rogers, and W. O. Win-
gate of Irwin county came into the office and we began to talk about
the drought in their section. One of them told me to look at the sev-
enth chapter of 2nd Chronicles, and read the 13th and 14th verses. Lee
did and I am quoting them here:
Tf I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I com-
mand the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence
among my people;
If my people, which are called by my name, shall hum-
ble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from
their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, ane we
forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
July 7, 1931.
What honest commission merchant
or association or organization c:uld object to a commission merchant = |
law? Why shouldnt they be willing to file reports of their transactions:
It will penalize him if he sells you in- ae
ferior seed of different varieties from what he recommended them to
