ATLANTA, GEORGIA, BHURSDAY, JULY 2, 1981.

There are several Federal Land Banks scattered over the United
States. These Federal Land Banks were organized to furnish the farm-
er with credit to make his crops. :
The Federal Land Bank for Georgi
Carolina. : = :
I have received numerous letters from different people telling me
about some little Co-operatives that they were becoming members of
for the purpose of securing credit. All of these parties state that they
have to buy stock in the Co-operatives before they can borrow money.
The stock always costs them anywhere from ten to twelve and a half per
cent of the amount they want to borrow. There are always other ex-
penses in addition te buying stock, such as searching records, recording
_ fes, etc. To all of these other charges they always add interest.
All of this expense comes out of the farmer, who finally gets a
check from the Federal Land Bank. - :
Then the farmer has his stock on hand and
anything for it. . :
s After all the expenses are figured the Government money costs the
farmer anywhere from 20 to 30 per cent. ~
I received a letter last week that was so in po
it herewith. s SE
I do not know whether this particular Co-operative secured the
money from the Federal Land Bank or not, but you will see that she
states in the letter that it was Government money they told her she
was getting. :

not writing to the right one please give me his address, as I dont
know much about business, and if I makea mistake, please pardon
me.
In this county, (Coffee) there was not a bank at all. The banks
all busted and everyone that had a-little money lost it in them. The
farmers of this section had no one to go to to get run. You have
heard that a drowning man will grab at a straw. Well, Mr. Sid-
ney Stubbs of Douglas, Ga., told the farmers they could get their
guano at cash price and some money to. run on from the Georgia-
_ Carolina Agricuitural Credit Corporation. ae :
Now, Ill try to explain my own case, what I did get in this
corporation. ~ Se
T first gave a mortgage on all crops and live stock on a 2 horse
farm. They sent it back and wouldnt have it, so I had 130 acres of
good land, with one hundred dollars indebtedness on it and I gave

HISTORY OF OTOOTAN SOYBE.
%
In a number of letters received b
the Georgia Experiment. Station in it
campaign against the sale of norther-
soybean seed in this state it is eviden
that some farmers have the idea tha
there are two varieties of Otoota
thern. This false impression is
ably due to the fact that Wilson
northern variety entirely differen
from Otootan, has seed very si
and is bing sold in the state 1
the name of Otootan.
All Otootan soybeans have
from one source. About 1914 this va
riety was introduced into he2 nl
has spread. Now it is widely a v7)
throughout the lower South. It is a
very late variety and will not mat
seed in the North.
The seed of Otootan and Wilson
are sO much alike that it is necessary
to examine them under a microse

Georgia Experiment Station w
glad to identify Otootan seed for f:
mers and seedsmen in the state.
Wilson 5 is a small, early variety no
adapted to Georgia conditions for ei
ther seed or hay, and the loss to Geor
gia farmers from planting these in
stead of Otootan is not so much fron
the cost of the seed as from the los
of the crop. A conservative esti
of this loss is around $20 for e
bushel of Wilson 5 seed planted.
