Can Cotton soliton eee Cotton?

=r this mornings matl I received the two following letters:
on No. + Sa
Slievilis Georgia,
_ May 11, 1931.
Eph. Eugene Sa :
- Commissioner of Agriculture,
alent, die
Dear Sir: =
I Poiiee in todays Constitution that Secretary Laronnk has declared
- the week of June ist Cotton Week. Can't you write a strong letter in
the Bulletin asking all farmers to insist that the GINNERS use cotton ~
: bagging this fall? It is just. about time for the ginners to place their ae
order for bagging, and a letter from you: will bring this to their atten-
tion. Put. it good and Stone. :
Very truly, -
H. F. DIXON, Cashier,
Bank of Ellaville,

Clito, Georgia,
May 9, 1931.
: Dear Mr. Talmadge: :
ee Cotton woods are stylish this year eee
- Fine dope. Now, how about getting behind we ginners and helpe!
ing us make cotton goods really stylish in wrapping up cotton. Have
_ you seen a@ sample of the new cotton bagging made from cotton? It is.
being produced commercially and will cost about 25% more than the old
jute. But will the farmers buy it? That is the big problem. Every
: ginser in Bulloch County wants to use it, oe will put it on at ot but

we are afraid to stock it, for if some black sheep inner gets a "1Be wr p
up from old patched sugar bag cloth, we feel pretty sure the rest of
would lose our ginning. I believe your influence along this line would
be of inestimable value, and a letter from you to the other Commiss-
ioners of Agriculture and to the leading daily papers, which are now
widely read, would also help wonderfully. How much cotton would.
be consumed'in wrapping up our cotton... Someone has said 500,000 bales.
Lets get this going. The manufacturers of various goods are patriotic
enough, but we farmers are inclined to do some penny pinching alon:
_this line, and if we are not mae ta. pep GUBENeS, how can we exp:
Bill to do it? :
: Z eee Good luck,
ne oe Sa, E. McDOUGALD, He
ae : Se Clito, Georgia.
I have written several editorials in the Bulletin before cancesniak
the. competition of ite with cotton, Jute is ae {nto this Count,
This is a very Tieall amount of the jute that
really used in the United States. Jute goes into: the manufacture Pe
rugs, carpets, cushions, lining of chair bottoms, lining of clothes, and.
: thousands of other things which I could mention. It is a cheap product,
and is a substitute for cotton. seis oa Oe in business makes People us e
it in preference to cotton.
Now, about cotton bagging for cotton: To wrap 12,000,000 baie of
cotton up in cotton bagging would consume approximately 250,000 ba
of cotton. The additional demand for 250, 000 bales of cotton here in th
United States would help the price of cotton. Growers of cotton an
Ginners should be the most enthusiastic people in this Country for an
added use and consumption of cotton. After all, cotton is our ere
money crop, and it is selling below the cost of production.
We have an organization now of all the Commissioners df the Cotto
Growing States to encourage the use of cotton in every way .
would like to see Georgia lead.
