A VISION OF GEORGIA

Last Thursday, April 16th, I teft the office and drove from Atlanta

to Macon, by Cochran, Eastman, on to Scotland, Ga. You could see
mules turning in all directions. Very little stuff was planted north of
Macon. I saw cotton up between Macon and Cochran.

Friday morning, April 17th, I drove from Scotland, Ga., through
Abbeville, Fitzgerald, Ocilla, and Nashville, on to Valdosta. In that sec-
tion of the state, cotton was up, shining pretty. Some of it had been
plowed. Saw corn, beans, and: peanuts up and worked out. I saw lots
of tobacco, and generally good stands. They had just had a rain in
that section, and everything was looking fine.

Went to Valdosta to accept an invitation from the Emory Jr.-Le-
Conte Natural History Society, and also to accept an invitation from
the Kiwanis Club.

The Emory Jr.-LeConte Natural History Society has been doing |

some research work on the value of the roots of the Gelsemium sem-
pervirens, or what is commonly known as Yellow Jasmine. This Yel-
Jow Jasmine grows abundantly in South Georgia. It is poisonous to
stock. It blooms out early in the spring, with a yellow bloom. It is an
evergreen, and stock are very fond of it: When eaten in sufficient
quantities, it is deadly. It belongs to the strychnine family. Its roots

make a very valuable poison for medicinal purposes. The Emory Jr.-

LeConte Natural History Society is very much interested in getting a
manufacturing plant in that section of the State to manufacture a
poison from the roots of this Yellow Jasmine. If they succeed in do-
ing this, they will be serving a yood purpose through eradicating a
poisonous pest, and also turning it into a profit.

While in Valdosta, I saw a patch of vetch and corn-cockle growing
near the railroad tracks, where seed had been unloaded from a box car.
This corn-cockle is commonly referred as cockrel. It has a bloom simi-
lar in color to the vetch bloom. It blooms about the same time as vetch.
However, cockrel is not a legume, and is also a poisonous plant. When

the seed of the cockrel ripen, they resemble very much the vetch seed.

When I saw this plant growing there in Valdosta, it made me realize the
importance of having a seed law in Georgia.

Georgia is the only state in the Union that does not have a special
seed law. Farmers are damaged on account of inferior seed, and seed
not of true variety, and seed mixed with noxious weed and grass seed
every year. This damage runs into millions of dollars.

_ Why doesnt the next Legislature of Georgia pass a pure seed law?

: After looking at this cockrel, I became interested in it. It ripens
about the same time as-wheat or oats. You remember in the Bible, in
St. Matthew, 13-24-30, where the enemy came at night and sowed tares

in the grain? I am informed that these tares that they sowed there in j
the grain are the same corn-cockle that we now have to contend with
in some of our grain in Georgia. Of cours; in small quantities, the
corn-cockle would only blacken the wheat where it was ground into
flour, but where it is thick with the cockle, it would be a poison.

After dinner at the Kiwanis Club, I drove from Valdosta, through
Homerville, Waycross, Blackshear, Brunswick, on to Savannah. I notic- ~
ed cows all along the way. Some showed good breeding. Others were the
old piney-woods type. Why not get a good male bull in all of these sec-
tions? Kill the scrubs. The scrubs are about fat now, and will make
pretty good beef.

There is a lot of young timber in the lower section of Georgia. .

saw where a great deal of damage had been done to timber by fire. Why

not have your county policemen specialize in enforcing the fire law of
Georgia? You could save the State millions of dollars every year if this
law was enforced,

From Brunswick to Savannah is that section of Georgia that used
to grow rice. There is a little truck farming on this marsh land between
Brunswick and Darien. Some of it was looking good. Darien, the old
Jumber center of Georgia, is a pretty little town, but we see the absence
of the great rafts of timber that used to blockade the river for miles and
miles years ago. f :

I struck detours all along the way. There is some highway work ae

going on in Georgia.
From Darien on to Savannah is a typical trucking section. The Ir-
ish potatoes are looking well. The strip of the country from Savannah
on to Augusta is principally a cotton section, and most of the cotton is
up. From Augusta back to Atlanta, they are making extensive prepara-
tions, and were busy planting. The farmers of Georgia are at work. |
They have bought less fertilizer than in previous years. This is a good
sign. :
Do you remember the quotation of my predecessor, Jim Price, The
best fertilizer for any farm is the boss tracks?

On this trip, it was sad to notice in some sections the dilapidated
homesthe barns and fences that needed repairs. But how can a farm-
er keep up his place when he must sell his products below cost? es

Winter grains are looking good. In some sections it is headed out,
and will be ready to cut within a couple of weeks. Lets be sure that we
put in plenty of feedstuffs. When the farmer plants plenty of feed-
au and a little to sell, the money crop will generally take care of

self, ; ;

SEED

to Georgia Farmers Caused by
Substitution of Northern Soy-
ean Varieties for Southern Varie-
ties Can Be Stopped by New Me-
thods of Identifying Seed ~
Bee ee:
The varieties of soybeans adapted. to
southeastern states are distinctly
erent from those grown in the
th. Unfortunately the seed of the
ern varieties are much cheaper in
and some of them are very simi-
in appearance. This situation of-
an incentive for dishonest, ignor-
r careless persons to sell northern
in the South under the name of
outhern variety. The loss to the
gia farmer from this type of fraud
wo-fold: First, the crop grown from
hern varieties is almost worthless.
ond, this practice decreases the de-
1d for southern grown seed. Several
S ago a large amount of Georgia
Otootan soybeans was sold in
ssippi. This year the demand for
an soybeans has fallen off sharp-
because Mississippi farmers have
fooled so often with Wilson Five
that they are afraid to plant
an. z
Thanks to the work of Messrs. Eth-
., Helm, and King, of the Missou-
Experiment Station, it is now pos-
ble to identify the seed of the princi-

wing descriptions are partly taken
om their bulletin on A Classification
Soybeans (Missouri research Bul-
131).

Stootan: Seed color, black; size, me-
im; well developed seed only slightly
ittened, being very thick through. In
cases the seed are nearly as thick
h as they are long or wide, so
the seed is nearly round. A dis-
tive characteristic when viewed un-
the microscope is the minute dark
ecks on the black seed coat.
wn specks cannot be seen
a good microscope.

lar to Otootan when viewed with the
naked eye. They are black, about the
same shape, and only a little larger
(5,025 seed to the pound). When view-
ed under the microscope, however, the
seed of this variety lack the brown
specks which are found on Otootan,

Laredo: Seed color, black with very
little gloss; size, small (7,775 seed to
the pound) and very much flattened.
The flat shape of the seed, together
with its color, size, and shape, is us-
ually enough to identify this variety. A
distinctive characteristic, when viewed
under a microscope, is the yellow to
brown marking found on the seed coat.
These markings can often be seen with
the naked eye or with the aid of a
good hand lens.

Biloxi: Seed color, dark brown; size,
very large (1,875 seed to the pound)
and slightly flattened; cotyledons, yel-
low. This is the largest of any of the
commercial brown seeded varieties. The
size and color of this variety are ra-
ther distinctive, so that the seed are
seldom confused with other varieties.

If farmers or seed merchants in

do, or Biloxi varieties about which they

are doubtful the Georgia Experiment

Station will be glad to identify them.

GEORGIA EXPERIMENT STATION
WILL HOLD CATTLE FEEDERS
DAY MAY 12TH

Director H. P.. Stuckey of the Georgia Experiment Station at
Experiment, Georgia, announces that May 12th has been set for the
date of Cattle Feeders Day this year.
Georgia. This work is being carried on under the supervision of Mr.
F..R. Edwards and Mr. Z. A. Massey.
about 600 pounds in weight and about 15 months of age at the be-
ginning of the tests, are being fed in Moultrie by the Experiment
Station to determine facts about certain southern feeds. :

Molasses is receiving special attention as a partial substitute.for
corn in the fattening ration. Experiments are being made to deter-
mine whether it is profitable to feed molasses in place of corn and
how much can be fed economically. Another phase of the work is
to compare Georgia white corn with western yellow corn as to feed-
All cattle'in these experiments are receiving some cot-
tonseed meal and hulls as a part of their ration and a mineral mix-

The results of these experiments will be of great interest to all
practical farmers and cattlemen in the state who are interested in
fattening beef cattle. This phase of the livestock industry is receiv-
ing more attention each year in the Southeast and experts give it as
their opinion that within a few years the South will be one of the
leading cattle feeding sections of the country. :

The program will include a number of well-known speakers. Sen-
ator Wm. J. Harris has been invited to address the farmers and cat-
tlemen and Congressman E, E: Cox of Camilla will give an address.
Other speakers will include Mr. H. McDowell, Hon. L. L. Moore and
Hon. W. C. Vereen of Moultrie. Mr. McDowell is recognized as one
of the leading authorities in the South on market conditions for
livestock. His talk on The Quality and Kind of Beef Demanded in
the South will be of vital interest to everyone connected with beef

A cordial invitation is given by the Georgia Experiment Station
and by the Moultrie Chamber of Commerce to all cattlemen and far-
mers, county agents, agricultural teachers and students, and to busi-

~ ment, to attend this meeting on May 12th.

This will be held at Moultrie,
