AGRICULTURE.
COMMISSLONER:

PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. JONES, DIRECTOR

- VOL, 13 STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 138, 1930.

WHAT IS IN STORE NEXT?

Yesterday the wheat market went to 69 cents per bushel. This
is the cheapest price since 1902. Cotton went down 20 points.
Practically $1.00 per bale. There is one consolation about the price

of farm productsthey cant go much lower.

Of course, we people in the South who have to buy flour, or do
buy it, profit temporarily by the western growers of wheat having
to sell their grain below the cost of production. But this is only a

temporary gain. When the farmers of one section of the United
States are hurt, they are hurt in all sections.

There is more cotton being held now by the farmers than at any

time that I can remember. Lots of this cotton is being shipped to
cooperatives and advancement made on it by the Government. Lots
of it is being shipped > to private brokers and advancement
made on it by the brokers or the banks. If cotton is
really being kept off the market the price will be sure
to advance. Of course, if they are letting the spot cotton go to the

mills there is no inducement for the mills to bid higher on the cot.

ton.

The Federal Farm Board should look into this and see when
they advance money on cotton that it is kept from being spun until
it is sold by the grower. They should give this same surveillance to
the wheat operations. I believe that the price on the staple farm

products would go up this fall, if they would do this.

We are having a meeting in Atlanta this week of the National
Fertilizer Association. Yesterday a delegation of the Southern
Commissioners of Agriculture called.on this Association in regard to
reducing the price of fertilizer for the incoming season. We point-
ed out to the Association that the present price of cotton is over 36
per cent less than it was this time last year. How can the farmer

continue to grow cotton and pay the-same high price for his fertili-

zer, plow tools, wagons and other necessities of life and sell his cot-

ton or other farm products at the present low price? It will not

~ work out.

Mr. Holton, Commissioner of Agriculture of Mississippi, in his

statement to the Fertilizer Association yesterday stated that the

farmers have reached the end of the lane. I believe it.

lane too. A

The Fertilizer Association had a picture out there at their place
of meeting, showing three bales of cotton that were grown on a plot

of 12 acres of land that had no fertilizer. They also had a picture
of seven bales of cotton that were grown on a Similar plot of 12
acres with fertilizer. This is a fair comparison.

There are
lots of rotten and broken down rails and posts on the way down Woe

What would be the result thoilgh if all the cotton erowine sec-
tion discontinued the use of fertilizer? Our yield would be approxi-

mately seven million bales,

If the cotton widnatactuvers of the world knew that this would :

happen. what would the cotton market do in the next month?
We have got to go to thinking straight and acting straight.

Mr. Holtons statement that we have reached the end of. ae
lane is true. /

Figuring
was used in

cotton at $50.00 a bale and figuring the fertilizer that
eorgia this year at an average price of $25.00 a ton

it will take 458,850 Rees of cotton to pay Georgias fertilizer bill

this year.

EUGENE TALMADGE.

RAISE BETTER CALVES _

There are a number of essentials
which one must keep in mind in the
raising of calves otherwise disap-
nointment is the rule. Po ee

Good feeding, of course, is first in
order for without feed of desirable
suality rightly allowed progress can-
not be made even though all the
other essential requirements are ta-
ken care of. One can save consid-
erable whole as well as skimmed
milk by the intelligent use of a su-
periorly blended calf meal, but what
we are most interested in now is
some of the other factors which have
to do with the health and well be-
ing of the calves. ee ee
. Both sunshine and feed should be
available so that the calf may have
a choice as regards the meeting of
his needs. The calf that has access
to. an outside run whereby sunshine
and fresh air is gained, practically
always shows good judgment in re-
gard to the needs for each. Some.
times the calves should be prevented
from going out into the sunshine
particularly if the days are too cold
but one must use his judgment in
these regards.

| To promote exercise which gives

the calf a chance to unbend his
limbs and thus promote growth. a
reasonable size paddock is in order. |
The feeding and sleeping quarters
should be kept scrupulously clean so-
that they may always be comfortable -
and sanitary. ee
In providing ventilation, one needs
to be careful to fix things so that
cold draughts are not experienced;
this needs to be watched much more
carefully in the late fall, winter and
spring months than during the sum-

able wages, and a 2 horse crop next |

TURNIP GREENS EXCELLENT
SOURCE OF VITAMINS

Laboratory tests of the Georgia Ex-

periment Station have shown that
turnip greens is a vegetable of very
- high vitamin content. As a general
rule leafy vegetables are good sources
of vitamin A and the thinner and
greener the leaf the richer the food
is in this vitamin. The thin green

Jeaf of the turnip contains approxi- }-

mately the same amount of vitamin
A as the much lauded spinach. Both
of these foods rank along with but-
ter in vitamin A content.

Turnip greens is also a wood source
of vitamin B, again ranking along

Ru with spinach and containing more

than such foods as tomatoes, orange
_ juice or milk. When tested raw,
gram for gram, it is much richer
than orange juice or tomato juice in
its. vitamin C content. Try using
some of the young, smooth leaves
raw. It may be substituted for pars-
ley in a butter sauce over boiled po-
tatoes. Chop some crisp tender
leaves fine and include them with a
little celery salt in tuna fish salad,
apple salad or potato salad.

But even when boiled 45 minutes
turnip greens, though having lost
about 85 per cent of its vitamin C

_ content by reason of the cookinc
process, are still almost equal to or-
ange juice or tomato juice in _ this

substance.

The following is a good recipe for
cooking turnip greens. Put a piece
of bacon of ordinary thickness about
three inches square into a quart of
cold salted water. Bring slowly to a

poil and add about three pounds of]

turnip leaves. Continue boiling un-
til tender, about 45 minutes. If you
prefer to drain off the water save it
for soup as it is rich in food value
particularly the water soluble vita-
mins.

In view of the excellent value of
turnip greens Georgians should use
them more generously in their diets.

periment, Georgia.

U. S. SCIENTIFIC BREED
SUPERIOR NEW SUGARCANE

Federal scientists are enthusiastic
over the breeding and development of
~ @ new variety of sugarcane which bids
_ fair to further increase yields of sugar,
already greatly. augmented by the
adoption in Louisiana of varieties im-
ported and distributed by the United
States Department of Agriculture sev-
eral years ago. The first release of the
new variety, which is now known as C.
P. 807, was in the 1930 season, but the
sugar experts have watched experi-
mental plantings for several years, and
base their expectations on results of
these tests, in which C. P. 807 out-
yielded the best of the competing varie-
ties by nearly a ton of sugar per acre,
or by more-than 35 per cent.
The initials C. P. in the name of
the new variety are derived from Canal

Point, in Florida, where the new va-

riety was bred at the United States De-
- partment of Agricultures field station.
~ This station was established by the
Bureau of Plant Industry in 1920, and
this is the first improved sugarcane va-
riety produced there, which the sugar
specialists have recommended to the
planters. At the station the breeding
program has had two objectives, pro-
duction of a sugarcane that would
yield a large quantity of sugar, and
which at the same time would be
highly resistant to the diseases that
nearly wiped out thesugar industry in

Ee eae to 7926, when it was
jrejuvenated by the departments intro-

duction from Java of the disease-tol-
erant P. O. J. varieties.

Compared with the best of the Tava
canes, P. O. J. 213, which yielded 4,865
pounds of sugar per acre in four test
plantings last year, the new variety in
adjoining plots yielded 6,725 pounds.

TO DISCUSS FARM ADJUSTMENTS
FOR SOUTH AT ATLANTA
MEETING

Improvement of the- income from
southern agriculture by a better ad-
justment of production of cotton, other
crops, and livestock to present and
prospective market conditions will be
the subject of a regional outlook con-
ference at Atlanta, Ga., November 10
to 14, The extension services and agri-
cultural colleges of the thirteen South-
ern States, the U..S. Department of
Agriculture the Federal Farm Board,
and other Government institutions will
be represented.

Committees of commodity specialists
and economists of the Southern States
are assembling material bearing upon
the more important southern crops, in-
cluding cotton. The Federal Bureau of
Agricultural Economics is assembling
information on the world-wide situa-
tion in cotton consumption and pro-
duction, and also on the market outlook
for other crops grown in the South.

Following the conference, an out-
look report for the Southern States,
will be issued, and a series of farm-
ers meetings will be held by the State
extension services cooperating with the
Federal Farm Board.

The South faces a difficult situation

this year, says. Dr. C. W. Warburton,
Director of Extension Work, in that
adjustments between crops is unusual- |
ly difficult pecause of the relatively
heavy production of several southern-_
grown farm products. The effort to.

balance southern agriculture by ex- | lingers for years.

panding the production of home sup-

sideration, along with the adjustment

of the production of the cash crops. A

thorough review of all of the _ possi-

bilitieswhich will be made at the At-

lanta meetingshould provide a sound

program for action which the exten-|
sions forces can carry back to the peo-.
ple.

SOYBEAN PEST

The velvet bean caterpillar, which is

developing an appetite for soybeans in

Louisiana and parts of Texas, can be
controlled by dusting with sodium fluo- |
silicate, according to the United States |
Department of Agriculture. A light.
brand of sodium fluosilicate, analyzing
about 80 per cent pure, will be effective
when applied during the pecele larval
stage.

RAISE HEALTHY HORSES
BY SANITATION SYSTEM

An ounce of prevention for colts at
the tender age is worth more in rais-
ing strong, virgorous farm horses than
a pound of cure after the horses are
mature, the United States Department
of Agriculture finds. ;

A study conducted in Montana by the
department showed that the most effec-
tive, and likewise the most economical,
way to raise healthy horses involves a
series of sanitation measures beginning
before the colt is foaled and continu-
ing until it is large enough and vigor-
ous enough to withstand the ravages
of stomach worms, intestinal round
worms, pin worms, blood worms, and
bots.

plies, feed crops, etc., must have con- tried the larval treatment on a few of

The first step in ae program recom-
mended by the department is the use of
drugs to remove parasites from the

i;mare before, or soon after, breeding.

The mare is then kept on clean fields
until she foals, so there will be little
jikelihood of reinfestation. The young
foal, thus given a start in life free
from parasites, will remain reasonably
free from them if kept on pastures free |
from infected animals and away from
the insanitary conditions usually asso- |
ciated with and favorable to parasites.

The use of a similar plan in raising |
mules in Louisiana and Nevada was)
followed by the production of healthy

yea the cows , calved prematurely

produced calves that did not tive, Se

Now, the Minnesota Experiment Sta-
tion comes along and demonstrates
against the importance of Calcium in
the reason. They have found that the
dreaded Milk Fever disease, which
occurs in a great many dairy herds,
can be cured by the use of a solution
of Calcium Chloride. They have found
that injecting about 60 to 100 C. Cc. 082
a, 20 percent solution of Calcium Chlo-
ride soon. puts the animal back on the
road to health.

As a matter of fact, in several cases
where the air treatment had failed to

and vigorous animals in place of in-| produce results they saved the animal

efficient mules of low vitality that were

_ by injecting the Calcium Chloride. Ac-

subject to colic and various other dis- | cording to their reports, in some cases,

orders.
TO RAISE FLIES FOR USE
IN CURING BONE DISEASE

Investigations are being made by the
United States Department of Agricul-
ture which, if successful, will lead to
the commercial propagation of certain
kinds of flies to be used by the medi-
cal profession in treating wounds and
bone inflammations.

The new treatment with larvae of
two or three kinds of flies, none of
which is to be associated with the com-
mon house fly, is the outgrowth of an
accidental discovery by Dr. William
S. Baer, former Army surgeon and now
of Johns Hopkins University. Having
observed in France two soldiers brought
in after lying for seven days on the
battlefields, with their wounds heavily
infested with fly larvae but healing un-
usually well, Doctor Baer pondered the
incident for 10 years while treating
many patients suffering from osteo-
myelitis. This disease more common
in children than in adults, is an in-
flammation of the bone which results
in flesh infections. It is hard to cure
and if allowed to become chronic often

About two years ago Doctor Baer
his patients and some of the chronic

cases were cured within six weeks.
Since the nabout 300 patients have

the animal had recovered within six

|minutes after the material was injected

into the blood stream.

This should emphasize to the dairy-
man the importance of watching very
carefully the Calcium supply that is
available to his dairy cows, for the
scientist has demonstrated that it not
oniy has a vital influence upon the
off-spring but also upon the health of
the individual . itselfAllied News

A FEEDING PROGRAM TO.
PREVENT FALL MOLTING

If body weight is maintained, fall
molting of early hatched puliets will be
prevented. Hearty consumption of
feed, especially the grain or fattening
feed, will hold body weight. With the
early hatched pullets we have not only
to maintain body weight but we must
feed them so that they may lay eggs,
grow feathers and increase in size bees
weight.

As soon as the polets start 0 lay
they should be housed and changed
from growing mash to laying mash, A
liberal suppiy of mash boxes should be
provided. One foot of feeting space for
every five birds will give satisfactory
results. lace the boxes so that they
will not be in the shadows. Keep
supply of laying mash before the birds
at all times.

In order to maintain or increase body

been treated. All children and four-
fifths of the adults were cured.

To prevent larvae from: introducing
injurious bacteria into the wounds, the
eggs from which they are hatched are
first disinfected by dipping them in a
soolution of bichloride of | mercury.
Lit-le is known about the actual bene-
fits contributed by the little healers,
but Doctor Baer is of the opinion that
they serve as living disinfectants. {

The success of Doctor Baers experi-
ments and the large number of cases
throughout the country to which this
treatment is adapted have created a
demand for larve. Entamologists of
the United States Department of Agri-
culture are interested not only in find-
ing methods of propagating large num-
bers of these sepcies of flies under as
sanitary conditions as possible but also
in devising accurate means of indenti- |
fying larvae as members of the proper
species before they are used.

LIME IS ESSENTIAL FOR DAIRY
CATTLE

Some years ago the Wisconsin Ex-
periment Station built a balanced:

ration as far as proteins, carbohy-
drates and fats were concerned, by
utilizing the product of a single farm
crop, such as corn, oats or wheat. They

was done, that the ration was lacking~
in some particular quality.

One of the things that they found |

particularly lacking was lime, and, as a

weight the pullets must eat lots of

grain. This amount should be at least

12 pounds of grain. a day to each 10
pullets. Do not leave grain before the
birds at all times in the laying house.
If this is done the birds will over-eat
