VOL. 13
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1930.
STATE CAPITOL
A TOBACCO ASSOCIATION
This year tobacco sold in Georgia for an average price
of 9.87c per pound. This is below the cost of product-
ion. It is now selling in North and South Carolina for
9.75c per pound. This is also below the cost of product-
ion in these states. Tobacco is one thing that only a man
or a goat will use.
DIES are also put in for good measure. I hearda good
one on cigarettes about three months ago. A fellow said
that they were too bi for a boy, and werent quite big
enough for a ae so. he guessed they would just about fit
a LADY.
_ But so much for that. Tobacco is absolutely worth-
less to the farmer when it is produced except to sell and
sell right then. Tobacco manufacturers know this. Last
year they spent $18,000,000.00 painting pretty pictures
of girls blowing smoke rings and sophisticated men say-
ing Camels Satisfy. This year, 1930, their appropria-
tion for drawing the pretty pictures and advertising to-
bacco is $20,000, 000.00. The Lucky Strike Orchestra
and Soloists are broadcasting over the nation-wide net-
work of radios every Thursday and Saturday, nights.
Each Thursday night it costs the manufacturers $11,000.-
00 for the Lueky Strike Orchestra, and each Saturday
night it costs them $15,000.00 to extoll the advantages.
to be gained from puffing a cigarette or cigar or squirt
ing tobacco juice over the floor. They advertise in the
1,944 daily newspapers over the United States every
Tuesday and Thursday. This costs them the sum of $8,-
000,000.00 annually. They are having some fun, giving
as low as 8c per pound for tobacco and selling it as high.
as $5.00 per pound. No wonder they can spend millions
of dollars painting the picture of anything froma bull to
X
Did I say man and goat? Some LA-
_O. Max Gardner, of North Carolina,
s hivhiy pated girl for everyone to look at when they
ride through the country. They wont stop at this, but
they are now talking over the air and cluttering we the
newspapers. .
The farmer has it in his hand to control all this fun. It
is back-breaking work growing and curing tobacco. The
farmer is a foo rig he continues to doit for nothing.
The suggestion has been made that the farmers of. the
tobacco sections of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Ken-
tucky, North and South Carolina, and Virginia, come to-
gether and form an association and contract with the
t
manufacturers for the amount of tobacco they want. I
mean contract for it at a fair living price. This sounds
like a good suggestion to me. I wish all the tobacco
growers in Georgia that are willing to form an organiza-,
tion like this would drop me a card as soon as they read | - ay
this article, giving their name and address, letting us _
know that they are willing to go into an association that
will contract for producing tobacco at a stipulated price,
and limit the production to so many pounds. The farm-
ers cant keep playing the fiddle for all of this devil-may- _
care money spending advertising, something that really
does nobody any good.
Be sure to write me if you want to go into this organi-_
zation. I want to see if it is possible to form an asso- La
ciation of this kind.
I am leaving today for a meeting called by Governor
of the Tobacco
Growers of that section. Mr. T. M. Linder and I will sub-
mit this plan at this meeting at Raleigh, N. C., tomorrow.

WHAT MAKES BIG COWS?
- There can be no quarrel with the
statement, within the breed the big
cow wins, and this then brings up
the question, What makes big
cows?
_ he big cow usually is the result of
good health and a strong constitu-
tion, and the way to bring that about
is to keep the calf fat and growing;
to keep the heifer fat and growing.
Plenty of good feed and shelter will
start the calf and the heifer with a
eonstitution and a frame that will en-
@ble them to eat and digest and to
perform the service of giving milk in
later years, and pay generous ~ re-
turns on the earlier care they have
received. .
