Seed Selection Bec Soil Fertility
7
*
-
We are now cathortae our crops, sotion. peas, ani a little later
on, corn. We farmers in Georgia are prone to be careless about
our seed selection.
If you would take time oa select your cotton seed from the
best stalks in the field it would surprise you how os ens you would
improve the variety of your cotton, ; meee
In some sections this is done by the boss of the farm going
around over the field and tying a string to the stalk that he wishes
to save for seed. When he has enough stalks to make a bale of |
cotton, pick it separately, carry it to the gin, have the roll cleaned
out and sack it at the gin. If all of our farmers in Georgia would
do this, they would soon build up a strong strain of cotton that would
produce a good yield through practically all kinds of seasons,
I visited the farms of Mr. J. P. Perry, Mr. W. J. Matthews, and
Mr. H. A. Petty, in Terrell County, about four weeks ago.
_ three of these men are seed breeders. I wish that all the farmers
in Georgia could have seen their cotton. I do not. mean patches
either. These three men had from 400 to 1000 acres apiece that
will make a bale or over to the acre. They have been careful breed-
ers of seed for the past eight or ten years. The bolls were on the
limbs: like little birds sitting on it and matured right up to the top.
There is a great. deal of difference in the different varieties of
corn that are grown in Georgia. If you have a variety that suits
you select your seed corn in the field. Notice the shape of the
stalk and select corn that hangs right on the stalks.
_If you grow a prolific corn select a stalk where there are two
_to these ears to the stalk. If you are growing one ear corn, select
a large ear that is well shaped and is on a strong, healthy stalk not
too near the top. Ls
The main thing in selecting your peas is to pick them - before
the rain. Do not thrash them out until just before you wish to use
them next spring. Be Particular to see that they are stored in a
good dry a . .

AS
The same general plan will. hold fond in A ake wae your peanut
seed, soy bean Aeed ang garden seed. ,
If your vanes of seed is not good ana you woinil to change, you
may have a neighbor who has extra good seed. You can get the eS
from him cheaper in the fall of the wear than you can any ue
_time. ge

The corn erop, cee to the crop report of the U. 8. De
partment of Agriculture of August 11th, is oe 484, 000 pee short
in the United States this year.
Plant oats and wheat. Do not wait ee long to plant the <
If you plant oats for feed and intend to feed it without thrashing
it be sure to put about 15 pounds of vetch with it to the acre. It
will double the yield of the crop and the roots of ee vetch will add
to the fertility of your soil.
If you, have the money to spare, eae you some rye and vetch
or Austrian peas and broadcast it in your cetton middles and plow
it in during the month of September. You will have good grazing
, through the winter and it will be equal to at least six or eight hun-
dred pounds of guano on your land for your next crop. a sep
S Fieure on letting some of your land rest next year. If it is,
run down and poor fix it so it wont wash and let it lay out. Build
up the land that you intend to plant next year through the winte ;
An acreage reduction rae effectsthe market more than. ony
else. 4 fe

What about having a compost pile to put out next spring?
Clean off your lots and your stables, get you some oak leaves and
pine straw. Put your layers of this with layers of either basic or
slag or acid. It is better than any. guano you could buy.
- It takes some extra work and some. extra time. Anything that
is worth while takes extra work and; extra time.
