THE TARIFF BILL PASSES
Last Friday, I received notice that the tariff pill had just passed
the Senate by a vote of 44 to 42. The tariff bill had been pending be- .
fore Congress for approximately fifteen months. This bill was intro-
duced, at a special session of Congress, for pe aid of agricultural condi.
~-tions-in the United States.
\
You will recall that in the last Presidential race, both parties were
pledged to aid the farmers. They have been pledging it every election
. I have heard of for the past thirty years. They are always promising
help to the farmers. These promises and pledges have about put the
farmers of the Southern States out of business. A
The tariff bill that has just passed the Senate raised the rate on
cattle from one and a half cents to three cents. In other words cattle
were being imported into this country from Canada and other foreign
countries and the cattle growers have secured a three cent duty per
pound on cattle that are imported into the United States. ,
I will name just a few of the many items affected by this bill.
The duty on corn was raised from fifteen cents a bushel to twenty-
five cents a bushel. The duty on oats was raised. The duty on rough
rice was raised. The duty on dried cherries was raised from two cents
a pound to six cents a pound. The duty on\imaraschino cherries was
placed at nine and a half cefits a pound and a forty cent ad valorem.
The duty had been only an ad valorem. So there wont be many maras-
chino cherries imported into this country for the next few years. The
_ duty on lemons was raised one-half cent a pound. The duty on green
- peas was, raised from one cent to three cents a pound. The duty on
onions was raised from one and a half cents a pound to two and a half
cents a pound. The duty on tomatoes was raised from one half cent a
pound to three cents a pound. And last, but not least, broom corn was
taken from the free list and placed at twenty dollars a ton.
Look out! Your brooms are going to cost you more, as are whisk
brooms, brushes, etc. You better wring some broom sage this fall be-
fore the frost hits it.
Scan thse items that I have named closely. The farmers of the
middle West, and of Louisiana and Florida, are helped by this tariff bill.
The farmers of the great cotton belt of the United States caught it in>
the neck good and hard.
x
=
Rates on all cotton yarn, cotton cloth and mixed cotton goods were
placed high. There will be very little importation into this country of
. any manufaetured cotton goods, or mixed cotton goods while the present
tariff bill is in life. /
There was no relief granted and no duty placed on jutethe Indian
fibre that is displacing the sale of three million bales of cotton right
here in the United States.
There was no rate plaeed on the importation of vegetable oils
which come mainly from the Philippine Islands.
So the cotton farmers, during the life of the present tariff bill, can
expect to pay more for what he buys and take less for his cotton, cotton.
seed and peanuts. -
The tariff bill passed the Senate by the closest margin of any tariff
pill that we have ever had. It: was doubtful, for a while, as to whether
it would pass or not. Some Republicans representing agricultural sec-
tions voted against, the bill. A few Democrats, and two from Louisiana,
and the two from Flroida, voted for the bill. They got protection,
though, on their raw products Me are grown both in Louisiana and
Florida.
Our present scale of wages, our manufacturing interests, our
American standard of living has been built up on a protective tariff. In
other, words, Ameria, is the high price country. We are not going to
do away with the tariff_as long as we have our present form of govern-
ment. Our problem is to uniformly administer the tariff. If you put.
a tariff on all our products, both raw and manufactured, you will ph ea
the favor out of the tariff.
The cotton farmers of the United States have to buy in the oe
market in the world. The present tariff bill has made it higher. They
have to sell their products in the lowest market in the world. Because
he is a competitor of peon labor where from ten to twenty cents a day
is high wages.
You know that this condition cannot last long.
Sunday night over the radio Will Rogers said that the present
tariff bill would surely help anybody in America that. did not have to
buy anything or eat anything!
