PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. JONES, DIRECTOR

STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA,

THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 1930.

Reports coming in to this office show that the peach crop this year
in the United States is a good deal less than the average for the past
five years. This is due to the severe winter. Most of the peaches in
the North and, West were killed. With proper care, the peach growers
of Georgia should make money. on their peaches this year.

It is very. essential to spray the peaches and keep them free from
what we ordinarily call worms and rot.

The Entomologists have technical names for describing these differ-
ent worms and rots. The Curculio seems to be the worm that is show-
ing up more abundantly in Georgia this year than ever before.

The Department of Entomology issued a spray schedule on April 4th,
advising the peach growers to! apply the shuck fall spray for Georgia
Belles, Hileys, and J. H. Hales, in the middle Georgia section during
the week of April 7-12. This shuck spray seems to be about three
pounds of stone lime, one pound of arsenate of lead to fifty gallons of
water. This same spray schedule should be followed by the North
Georgia peach growers about a week later. 4 ~

During the last few days of April and thd first ten or fifteen dave of
May, we will have a drop of wormy and inferior peaches. It has been
recommended for a long number of years by peach growers and peach
experts, that all drops during this time should be picked up, raked up,
or swept up into piles and burned. Of course it will take some old
dead weeds and grass mixed: in with these little peaches to burn
them up. .

The experts ra that the burning of the little peaches is as good as
any spray that you could use. /

I know that getting rid of the squares that fall from cotton with the
boll weevil larvae in them is about the best way to control the weevils.
- I imagine that the same rule would apply to these little peaches. /

In next weeks Market Bulletin, I will publish a call for a meeting of
all of the peach growers of the State. There. has been a great deal of

be

\

discussion of and dissatisfaction with the rules and regulations that we

have in the peach standardization law. I want such rules and regula- i

tions that the majority of the peach growers of the State think will be
to the best interest of the peach and apple industries.

I have not. fixed a definite date but look out for it in next weeks
issue of the Bulletin. I want all of the peach growers of Georgia to
attend. It is your business. We want reasonable regulations that can
be enforced.

In the Chemical Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture, we
make bacteria for different legumes and sell
gia at cost. A ; Bley cent bottle is enough to inoculate one bushel of
seed.

Beans, peanuts, clover alfalfa, vetch, Austrian peas and any legume
that draws its nitrogen from the air is benefited by inoculation of the

seed before planting. The} plain explanation of this inoculation is that...

it adds to the root system of the little plant and causes it to begin to
draw nitrogen from the air earlier and more abundantly. 1 i

Field peas will show up from inoculation quicker than any of the
legumes that I know of. y

- These legumes inoculate the soil themselves. You have probably

noticed that. peas grow very poorly on a piece of land where pas were
never planted before. This artificial inoculation will put the bacteria

in the soil that the same legumes would have put in had they been.
planted on the same piece of land the year before.

We get orders every day for different quantities of this inoculation.
Judging from the letters that we receive in the office it is very beneficial.

Didnt we have dandy weather for the past week? Yesterday, felt like
the middle of June. Dont be fooled by this good weather though and
plant your stuff too deep. Cold and rain is liable to set in again. Poor
stands, as a rule, come from the seed being planted too deep.

April 14, 1930. EUGENE TALMADGE.
