3 eAbout this | time every year most of the merchants and
ther business enterprises take stock of their. goods,

and debts. Farmers, toa certain extent, look on this time of

, ear as the idle time and eng

they ean. This is one of the most Emportan times of the year
Oo take stock on a farm.

If there are any old plow tools, hoes, ete., still Wine around .

the field get them in immediately before the winter rains
an put them in a dry. shelter. :
noticing tie cools of your outhouses.
long as the roof is kept good.

_ Notice the seed that you have stored away for planting

to: see that they are not. in a corner where it is leaking on them,

Another thing that most farmers neglect is securing their

: ed corn until the dropper is at work. in the field.
er time to select seed corn is to select it in the field. If you

assets ;

age in some other line of work if ;

The word dry shelter implies
Your house is good as _

The prop- :

a quantity for the mill. Also, when you feed your stock be

on the watch-out for seed ears. Have'a barrel or some sacks |

hanging around in the crib for these seed ears. You will be

surprised to note how you will improve youc seed corn by

this method. i e
: A good many farmers have a plan not to kill a pic unless
they reach a certain size or weight. This plan i is alright if you
have plenty of cheap feed to keep the pigs growing. If you
intend though, to keep a pig over and feed, him on corn out of
the crib it is more economical to kill him at less weight than
you expected. co

Again I wish to call the. farmers attention to the fact that
_ hogs are selling too cheap. If you. will butcher them yourself
~and cure the meat at home the price will advance.

ARTIFICIAL CLIMATE IS AID
TO HEALTH OF SHADE TREES

_ Abundant rainfall, entomologists
have observed, provides an effective
control on the destruction of forest
trees by bark beetles, says the United
States Department of Agriculture.
When the rainfall is deficient the en-
tomologists have learned to expect
that the bark beetles will multiply
faster than usual. It also appears
that trees suffering from lack of
moisture develop conditions . within
them that make more effective the
attacks of the beetles. This is one
of the facts which entomologists list
as a relationship between meterolo-
gical conditions and insects.

In the broad expanses of commer-

cial forests it is impossible, or at least
~ uneconomical, to try to supply water

by artificial means. On lawns and
in the vicinity of homes a fine tree
has a value much in excess of the
sawmill.
Here the home owner would often
gladly pay any reasonable price or
make any reasonable effort to pro-
tect his tree from insect attack.

In the case of the bark beetles the
remedy. is almost obvious. It is to
provide moisture conditions which are
' the counterpart of heavy precipita-
tion in the forest. Incipient infesta-
tion by the beetles may be checked

and drowned out by liberal applica-

tions of water to the roots of the tree.
If other trees in the neighborhood are
being injured by bark. beetles, a co-
pious water supply for the roots of.
unaffected trees is likely to provide
-a high measure of protection.

TOADS TAKE NIGHT SHIFT
WITH BIRDS AGAINST INSECTS

' Many farmers recognize birds as a
valuable ally in the warfare against
insect pests, but few know that when
the birds cease their daylight activi-
ties the battle is taken up by another
important allythe toad.

Mealtime with toads often begins
before sunset and continues through-
out a greater part of the night, ac-
cording to the Biological Survey of
the United States Department of Ag-
riculture.
devour some beneficial insects, they
more than compensate for such in-
discriminate feeding by eating term-
ites, beetle larvae with injurious or
pajentially, injurious _ _ habits, plant-

jles, which if allowed to

Although toads, like birds, |

and other noxious insects. Abnorm-
al infestations of extremely destruct-
ive weevils are frequently reduced
by toads, and they render a useful
service in feeding on adult click beet-
propagate
would add to the number of _ wire-
worms feeding on valuable crops.
Leaf chafers, which destroy blossoms
and defoliate orchard trees, are fre-
quently taken by toads as well as the
white grubs of May beetles, which
are such pests in lawns, ae
and cultivated fields.

Under certain conditions in green-
houses, gardens, fields of small grain
or forage crops, and on golf courses
toads perform visibly effective ser-
vice. In any of these situations nox-
ious insects and other invertebrates
are sure to predominate; hence the
bulk of the toads food consists of
injurious forms. -

Toads have managed to survive thus
far in spite of their unattractiveness
and the absurd superstitions and be-
liefs associated with them. As the
country has become more densely set-
tled, however, toads have had to face
new dangers from mans inventions,
such as the automobile, the mower
and binder, and other farm machin-
ery. Great numbers of toads migrat-
ing across highways are destroyed
each year by automobiles, and the
sewer systems of large cities have
long taken an annual toll, =>

An active interest in the conser-
vation of toads must be taken, says
the Biological Survey, if these use-
ful animals are to escape extermina-
ton by the draining of their breeding
places, by the burning over of fields
and woods, and by other perils of
their present-day environment.

IMMATURE CATTLE ARE
CLASSIFIED

(Prepared by the United States De-

partment of Agriculture.)

A detailed description and explana-
ion of the tentative market classes
and grades of calves and vealers as
set up by the bureau of agricultural
zconomics, United States Department
of Agriculture, has just been publish-
od by the department. These mar-
set classes and grades, according to
Don J. Slater, federal marketing spe-.
cialist, are at present more or less
generally recognized by the trade at
many of the large central markets.

At practically all important central
live stock markets a days supply of

immature cattle ranges from several |

hundred up to several thousand head.
These animals have been and still are

designated by various names at dif-

ferent markets, Mr. Slater says in
the departments new publication. At
some markets all such animals are
termed calves, whereas at other mar-
kets they are called vealers, and at

still other markets, usually the larg-

er, more highly developed and spec-
ialized markets, part of them = are
known as calves and part as veal-
ers. 's See
Fall Into Two Groups |

When these immature animals are

classified and graded in accordance

with the system of tentative stand-
ard market classes and grades adopt-
ed by the bureau of agricultural ec-
onomics, they naturally fall into two

rather distinct groups because, when

slaughtered, they produce two more
or less distinct kinds of meat. As a
general rule, immature cattle three
months of age or younger produce a
dressed carcass the meat of which is
distinctly different from that ob-
tained from older young cattle,

turkeys.

centage of immature cattle

approximately three months old or}.

younger is known in the wholesale
and retail meat trade as veal, where-
as the carcasses produced by most of
the immature cattle over three months
old are known in the wholesale and
retail meat trade as calf carcasses.
Base of Tentative Grades.

It is on the basis of these differ-

the bureau of agricultural economics
are founded. The new publication
discusses the market uses for calves,
classes of slaughter calves, weight
selections of slaughter calves, and
grades of slaughter calves, Vealers
are similarly covered. Copies of the
publication, known as Circular 28-C,
Market Classes and Grades of Calves
and Vealers, may be obtained from
the Department of Agriculture, Wash-
ington, D. C.

Sodium flouride or any good

Head lice are almost white in color

will kill these lice. Too much grease
is almost as harmful as the lice. Dip-

once for each side; and once. for the
throat will not be too much.

| AGRICULTURAL HINTS

Sweet clover should be grazed so
closely that stock eat the new, ten-
Jer shoots all the time, or it will get
tough.

A profitable practice is ne give lit-
tle pigs grain in addition to their
mothers milk after they are three
weeks old, and that can best be done
by means of self-feeders in a pig

pee hoe. alfalfa is ihe best pas-
ture obtainable, furnishing a maxi-
mum of ideal forage throughout the
season, even in dry weather. As
many as 20 shots can be carried on
an acre.

be pastured. If the alfalfa has been
seeded alone and the weeds become
numerous, the field can be cut high
when the alfalfa plants are just com-
ing into bloom. Do not cut the al-
falfa if there are only a few weeds.

_A thorough examination of the in-

terior of the poultry house for mites:

and bed bugs may reveal legions of
these unwelcome guests. If they are
present, there is a good steady job
ahead getting rid of them. Roosts,
