AGRICULTURE...
COMMISSIONER ===
STATE CAPITOL
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1929.
_ were depressed ovef the price of wheat.
- farmers.
SS
Monday, October 28th, the Commissioners of Agriculture of 32
states of the Union, met at Washington, D. C., in annual convention.
We were in session the 28th, 29th, and 30th. There were a great many
things of interest taken up by the Association.
x Secretary of Agriculture Hyde met with us Tuesday evening.
The Commissioners from the grain section of the United States
Of course the Commissioners
from the Southern States were a'so depressed because of the low price
_ of cotton, cotton seed and peanuts.
There was a standing committee of seven, appointed to confer with
Secretary of Agriculture Hyde on any emergency which affects the
I am the representative on the committee from the South-
eastern States. ; :
- The Association of Commissioners passed several resolutions and for-
warded them to the Speaker of -the House and the President of the
Senate. I was on the Resolutions Committee.
The Commissioners were very insistent in petitioning Congress to-
immediately enact tariff legislation which will protect the raw products
of this country from competition with raw products that come in from
abroad.
_ The specific program of the Southern Commissioners on this tariff
ee is for a duty| on vegetable oils, long staple cotton, jute and
urlap. oe
Of course there are a great many other products that come in com-
petition with our farm products that we wish a duty on. I have argued
_ the question with you in the Bulletin before of the necessity of a duty
on the three items mentioned above. Right now an inch, and an inch
and an eighth staple is not bringing any more on the market than a
seven-eighths inch staple.
more. This is only $2.50 per bale. The extra long staple cotton always
produces less to the acre than the short staple cotton. The $2.50 per
bale that you get for the long staple cotton over the short staple will
not pay for the loss that you have on the same acreage in the amount
you produce.
Last year there were between four hundred and five hundred thous-
and ba'es of Egyptian long staple cotton shipped into the United States.
It is being imported now into this country daily. This accounts for the
failure of our long staple cotton to bring the premium that it deserves.
MARKET
At some points it is bringing one-half cent-
A Meeting Of The Commissioners Of The United Stabae in Washington, D.C.
Peanuts and cotton seed are going at begging prices. They will
continue to do this and will get cheaper if we do not have a duty on the
vegetable oils that are pouring into this country from the Philippine
Islands. :
A vote was taken in the U. S. Senate recently on Philippine inde-
pendence. It lost. There is also a bi'l pending to tax the importations
from the Philippine Islands and return the tax to the Philippine Gov-
ernment as long as the Islands are a possession of the United States.
- The Southern Commissioners of Agriculture stand unequivocally for
Philippine independence. If this is not granted, we wish a bill passed
taxing their importations and returning the tax to the Philippine Gov-
ernment. This is the only way that we can protect the market for cot-
ton seed oil, peanut oil, soy bean oil, hog lard and dairy products of
this country. =
Vegetable oils that are imported into this country are. produced by
naked peon labor where 10 cents a day is high wages. If there is no
protection given, on the vegetable oil situation in this country it will
lower the standard of living of our farmers in the South to the level of |
the peon laborer of the Orient. :
All manufactured articles have a tariff duty. The vegetable oils
go principally into soap. There is a high duty on soap. I could enum- .
erate all the manufactured articles and show you where the duty pro-
tects them but the raw products from which they are made are not. pro-
tected and sell on a parity with the raw product from other countries.
-T have received hundreds of communications from the farmers of
Georgia, endorsing the program of the Southern Commissioners of Ag-
riculture, within the last few days. I do not think this is much Farm.
Relief but I think a direct tariff on products which are produced by
our farmers will be the aid and help that has made our manufacturers
of America rich. ee
Wednesday, November 6th, we are to have a meeting in Macon of
those interested in the organization of a peanut association in Georgia
for the purpose of pooling and holding their peanuts. Of course this
Association managed porperly will help some. But the absolute neces-
sity for the tariff on peanuts of $85.00 per ton minimum to be effective
is for a tariff to be placed also on vegetable oils that come into this _
country in competition with peanut oil, :

WHEN THE TURKEYS BEGIN TO
PRIMETHE PROPER FEED
In an article in the October number
of the OK Poultry Journal, Mr. Emil
G. Glaser in reference to the proper
method of preparing for the market
said: We have found out much about
the hatching, rearing and successful
brooding of turkeys during the last
five years, and that accomplished, we
are now extending our efforts a step
further, and beginning to devote con-
siderab'e time to increasing the qual-
ity of the bird at market age. Various
things are being tried. Cross-breed-
ing is one means of increasing mar-
ket quality. But, for all the cross-
breeding we have still to remember
that without feeding properly and in-
telligently no quality can be had.
Some of the essentials which tur-
keys must have from their poult days
on have been mentioned. These things
provided, the turkeys should now be
ready for the priming feeds.
Every morning turkeys to be gotten
in shape for the market should be giv-
them morning, noon and _ evening.
Heretofore an evening or a morning
feed of mash was the extent of the
mash feed. Now we want to stuff the
and put them into such prime con-
dition that every person who happens
to get. one of your birds will proclaim
it the best turkey I have ever eaten.
The mash so fed is best mixed five
to ten hours before feeding. Fill a
bucket half full of sour milk. Then
add enough mash so that the resultant
mixture will be a thick sloppy mix-
ture. Mix thoroughly and allow it ts
sand the specified time.
the mash particles time to soak up the
milk, which process results in a stiff
mash. Some greens or germinated
oats mixed with the mash adds to its
palatability.
- The mash is fed morning, noon and
night. The last two weeks corn is add-
ed in a range mash hopper, another
one in which mash of the dry variety
is continually provided. Give the tur-
keys a feast every day. Theyll put
on additional weight and quality. Dont
risk putting a poorly developed, poorly
oyster shell and grit, and dont forget
en a milk mashthis feed given to}.
feed into them for four or five weeks} |.
This gives |
fleshed, turkey, lacking in quality and |
flavor, on the market. Feed plenty of
sour milkhere is the feed with the
key flesh.
The hardest part about this feeding
program is giving the milk mash to
them, for turkeys are such hogs that
they'll almost run you over before you
get it to them should you feed the
mash inside the fence very far. Why
not save yourself a good scalping or
other great bodily injuries, by placing
fence on the other side of the wire.
Cut a strip the length of the trough
into the wire and through this give
the turkeys their mash. ~
We are sorry that our space will not
permit the use of the entire article.
We therefore use only that part per-
taining to feeding, as we believe our
readers will be interested as well as
benefitted thereby H. N. NaylorOk-
lahoma Marketing Bulletin.
