EUGENE TALMADGE
PUBLISHED buf the BUREAU OF. MARKETS ee eet
STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 1929. NUMBER 38.

-AGAIN---VETCH AND AUSTRIAN PEAS

Mr. R. L. Hasty of Chipley was in the office to see me yesterday
afternoon. I have heard of Mr. Hastys farm at Chipley ever since I

_ have been Commissioner of Agriculture. Mr. Hasty has been planting

a mixture of Vetch, Austrian Peas and Crimson Clover for the past 15
years. Mr. Hasty puts about 12 pounds of Vetch, about 8 pounds of

_ Austrian Peas and about 5 pounds of Crimson Clover in this mixture

to the acre.

"This year Mr. Hasty will put in 600 peres-hhis onthe term in the

: above mixture.

This should be planted in September, begin the planting then and
finish it in September if you can. You can plant it as late as Novem-
Der,

7 Mr. Hastys farm is in Harris County. Mr. H. F. Kimbrough is
. the Representative from Harris County. Mr. Kimbrough told me that
15 or 20 years ago Mr. Hasty had a very poor farm. He always had

trouble with tenants. He would have to buy them out of jail, etc. Mr.

Kimbrough says that now the very pick of the farm hands are always
running after Mr. Hasty to get on his place.

Mr. Hasty states that where you have your land well built up the
tenants. will listen to you about your plans, etc., and will do better
farming on the place,

This will give you an idea, on the fertility of Mr. Hastys place.
This year a man who owned land of his own, left his own place, came
over and traded with Mr. Hasty to work some of his land on halves.
The man furnished the stock, plough tools and one-half of the cal-
cium arsenate for dusting the cotton. Al. Mr. Hasty furnished was
the land and about 400 pounds of acid phosphate, broadcasted in Jan-

uary, to the acre.

If you will think about this you will see that the man made a

. good trade. On Mr. Hastys farm this year he will average around 40

bushels of corn to the acre; he will average around a bale of cotton

.. to the acre. Remember, these crops were all made without any com-
_. mercial fertilizer, here in Georgia on a naturally poor farm. The only

}

commercial fertilizer that Mr. Age uses is the acid phosphate which
he broadcasts in January, and these cover crops take the place of ev~
erything else. Along about the last of February or the first of March
he will turn under these cover crops and then plant, and will not be
worried with a guano distributor.

Mr. Hasty also grazes these winter cover. crops all through the
winter. This more than pays for the cost of the seed and planting.

What Mr. Hasty has done on his farm others can do. Build
your land with winter.cover crops. It will.double your yield and also.
cut down your fertilizer bill.

T received a letter from Mr. John A. Koens today fravising soe
whether it is too late to plant corn or kaffir corn, in Bartow County.
I think it is too late to plant corn that will do any good.

Mr. Koens writes that he is in the dairy business and has had bad
luck with his feed and wants to grow some now. I read his letter very
carefully and he failed to give his address. We have given notice to
the office force to always save the envelopes, as this:-helps us to locate
the address occasionally where it is not given in the letter. In the .
future when I receive any letters without the address I intend to an-
swer them through the columns of the Market Bulletin.

In answer to Mr. Koens I would say that the most economical feed
to plant now is turnips. Make the ground rich. You cannot make
it too rich. Plant the turnips in two foot rows. Work them about
twice. Plant different varieties, some quickly maturing turnips and
others of later varieties. The cow-horn is the best to stand the win-

ter. Apply nitrate of soda after the turnips are up. Put a heavy

layer of pine straw in the middles and it will help them to withstand
the winter freezes. Turnips make good feed for cows. You can make |
ee rd quantity on a small plot: of ground if you will make it
ric ;

It may be beneficial that Mr. Koens forech to put his address in
his letter, as Someone else may be short on dairy feed and might adopt
the suggestions as given above,

EUGENE TALMADGE.
