. | : My Visit To The Meeting Of The State Agricultural | Vg
A) Society At Valdosta Last Thursday

NUMBER 37,

=) The Georgia State Agricultural Society met at Valdosta last
Thursday at the Ashley Hotel in Valdosta. General Peter W. Meldrim,
of Savannah, is President of the society, and Mr. A. E. Gibson, County

_ Agent of Terrell County, is its secretary. This is the oldest Agricultur-.
al Scviety in the State of Georgia and is about 120 years old.

{ There were several fine papers read.at the meeting on the average

| ~ general agricultural development, etc. I wish that every reader of the
soil, soil erosion, forestry, cotton and: corn varieties in the State, our

_ general agicultural development, etc. I wish that every reader of the
Bulletin could get these various articles and read them.

a, The next meeting of the Georgia State Agricultural Society will
| ~~ -+be held at Cairo, Grady County, Georgia, about the first of next Aug-
_. ust. Iwould like to see more farmers attend these meetings.
ee es After the morning session we were carried out by a delegation of
ee _ Valdosta people to the dairy of Mr. Hunt. Mr. Hunt has the champion
ce een cow of the State of Georgia. She is a Jersey and gave over 80 pounds
q of butter during the month of May this year. Pe.
a Mr. Hunt gave a dinner served in his milking room.. You can im-
Z : agine just how clean the milking room was for the people to be willing
to eat a meal there. I did not see any flies around any of the dairy,
the lot, thecalf pen or anywhere. Mr. Hunt keeps them down by
me esprinkling a thin layer of acid phosphate around over his manure about
; every week or ten days. Flies will not breed in manure pens if this is
Ste eae done. He also has his dairy barhs and houses.screened. Some of them
|. _-. are double screened. oe
: 8 Mr. Hunt had about 20 acres of silage corn and I think this will
ee takethe place of $5,000 worth of mixed feed. He is making money in
Re -\ the dairy business in Georgia. He is making it through the last word
BRS in efficiency. S
Pa 8 We were next carried to the farm of Mr. Tillman. Mr. Tillman
Bee has a large general agriculture farm. They were curing some tobacco ~
Sn on his farm while we were there. Mr. Tilman has a large herd of beef
-eattle. He also has a great number of hogs. I noticed that he had his
hogs in the\same pasture with his cattle. From the appearance of the .
eM hogs it seemed that they had been running in that pasture a long time.
a The older hogs were in good condition. The little pigs were not look-
ae ing well. They never do when they are allowed to run in a pasture
where older hogs have been running regularly. Parasite worms attack
them and they are stunted for the first six or eight months of their
ives. Sows should farrow in a place where no other pigs have been

MARKET REPORT ,

running. They should stay there until their pigs are practically wean-
ed. After this the parasite worms do not attack them as much as
when they are very small. \

Mr. Tiilmans farm was a beautiful sight all through. He had good ~

corn, good cotton, good beans and peanuts, and good tobacco. The
beef cattle looked like gold money coming over the hill. I think his
peanut field will ruin a few of those little runty pigs about a mont
after they are turned in on it. :

Our next visit was to the farm of Mr. Shorer. Mr. Shorer is in the

plant business. He has overhead irrigation on 20 acres of land. I
went out in the car with a man who is interested in the bank where
Mr. Shorer does business. The banker told me that Mr. Shorer had

made over $35,000 profit on his 200 acre farm this year. He grows |

pepper, tomato, potato, and various other kinds of plants. These were

all sold and gone. The ground where they grew was covered with a | .

rank growth of beans. These beans will be turned under to keep up
the fertility of the soil. The balance of the crop of Mr. Shorer was in
corn and beans. The corn was extra good. . The beans were almost
a solid mat over the ground. 4

You cannot make money on land unless you keep it up.

Mr. Shorer had meat hanging up in his store house. He had plen-
ty of dogs al lover the place. Right behind his house he had a pretty
little lake. His boys and girls were swimming and playing in the lake.

You, can never be successful on the farm unless you live and board

at the same place. Try to keep your children interested in staying on

the farm and keep them satisfied at home. A swimming pool will
attract them quicker than anything I know of. Fe

The next trip we took was.to the farm of the McLeod Brothers.

On this farm we saw, five acres of cotton that I think will make a bale
and a half to the acre. We saw five acres of corn that I believe will
make 75 bushels per acye. The corn was in the fodder pulling stage.
It seemed like a pity to let all of that pretty long fodder dry up. It
would have been hard for them to stack the fodder on that five acres
if they had. pulled it. ; ue

Georgia is all right. .When we really begin to love the land and

_determine to build it up, lets be sure to keep it built up. There are
a great many things that discriminate against the farmer, but there |

are powers that are making a fight now in the right direction. Land:

_is now at the bottom but five years from now it will come into its own.
