STATE CAPITOL

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 25, 1929.

NUMBER 35. .

&

. Last year at this time, I remember writing an editorial telling about

yo going home and seeing hoes. and, plough tools scattered around over

the fields.

_ In south Georgia most: of the people have quit ploughing the stand-
ard field crops. It is cheaper to get up these hoes and plough tools
than it is to let them lay in the fields and be ruined and have to buy
them over next spring. is
A large portion of south Georgia has open range. Some of the fields
are fenced. Some people try to fence their fields with a shot gun and
a bull dog. This is a bad habit and you ought to quit it. If you have
been lucky enough to have kept all hogs and cows out of your fields
so far, there may not be any trouble with your fences. Go around
though and see if they do not need a little patching in places. There
may be a tree blown down across them, your old cow has not found
it yet, but when she does and takes in a bunch of cattle she will test
every point of your fence after that, even if you fix that one place.
- You do not want your cows and hogs shot up because they have gotten
into somebody elses fields, then do not shoot up your neighbors stock.

LAYING BY TIME.

I would rather give out of flour at my-house than to give out of stove

-~ wood. I had an experience. once and you know what I am talking

about. You can buy a sack of flour, but if you do not have the stove
wood there you are going to get in trouble. Most farm hands are idle
now, cut your stove wood and house wood for the winter. If you-put
ie off until gathering time comes you wont have time to attend to it
en. \ 2 s

Start you a turnip or rutabaga patch. Get you a rich spot of ground,

Prepare it thoroughly and plant your seed. Get some oak bushes and
_ place around over the patch. The sun will not kill them if you will ~

do this. Lets dont go to the store argund in the fall and buy ruta-.
bagas, cabbage, etc., shipped from Maine or some other far away State,

~when we can grow our vegetables at home. ;

The Legislature is still busy. If you have attended to the above du-

ties, about the best money you could spend would be to come up and

pay a visit to your Capitol while the General Assembly is in session.
Come up and.see your Representatives and visit the different depart-

ments. Remember this is your business and you ought to look after it.

a EUGENE TALMADGE '

- Jt is true that the prices received this year were the best that the
- growers have received in the past ten years. Several news items have
ae spneer in the daily papers advising that the peach growers of Geor-

gia recived as much for this years short crop as they did for the 1928
crop. This may be true, but fully 85 per cent of the peach growers
of this state lost money in 1928.- Not more than 25 per cent of the
growers will make above expenses this year. There are hundreds of
growers who will not make expenses. f

- The point which I want to stress is that you should not become too
~ enthusiastic over the peach situation and plant more trees. I will grant

x

"Phe Peach. Situation Ta.Georaia

Do not becomestoo optimistic over the Peach situation in Georgia.

you that quite a few orchards are being abandoned. Thousands of
trees have become phoney, but with the trees coming into bearing and
with those trees that are being well cared for, Georgia will, at least
for the next few years, under the most favorable conditions produce

as many peaches as can be sold at a profit. My advice would be not to

plant more trees, but to take care of those you already have.

I have every reason to believe that the experiment being conducted
by the State Bureau of Markets in carrying fresh peaches under re-
frigeration the year round is going to be a success. If so, this should

take off the market two to three thousand cars annually.

; EUGENE TALMADGE, Commissioner of Agriculture.

THE MEDITERRANEAN FRUIT FLY

The Mediterranean fruit fly is one of the most destr ve i
sects known to. the entomological world. It was fone on fhe oe
American Continent for the first time on April 6, 1929, by Mr. J. C
Goodwin of the Florida State Plant Board. The United States is the
last large fruit country of the world to be invaded. The Mediterranean
fruit fly, according to all vailable records, was first known to science
about one hundred years ago. His record started with a cargo of de-
caying oranges arriving in London from the Azores. He rapidly spread
to all the countries of Southern Europe and North Africa, lying along
the Mediterranean Sea. In 1889, he had reached South America and

eight years later succeeded in crossing the ocean to Western Aus i
t stralia, |
and the following year reached the East Coast of that continent. The

first year of the present century, the fly established itself as far t
: b buULY, shed. north
as Paris, France. He appeared in South America about that time, and
Brazil in 1904, and Argentina in 1905. In 1910 he was found in one lo-
aca poe ea years ee taken possession of every im-
of the group, an ad put an end to t ing
horticultural and agricultural inddetties, Soh erin

_As to how the fly gained a foothold in the United States is not
definitely known. The United State has for many years had inspect ~
ors in all of the principal ports of entry and all materials that might
ee Clete hades eoae fly were carefully inspected. On nu-

j sions fruit fly larvae were foun i
feria fe ee eo nd in fruits and vegetables

The Mediterranean fruit fly is a two-winged fly, about two-thirds

of the size of the house fly; the general color is yellow to light } :
and the wings bear brownish bands or spots, a eae oan te
light colored rings. The pattern on the thorax, or portion behind the
head, consists of irregular white markings on a background of black.
The maggot, or larvae, when fully grown, is about one-third of an inch
long, and is white or somewhat of the same color as the fruit pulp.
The tail end is the largest, and from there the body tapers to a sharp
point at the head. It has no legs, nor head, that can be recognized
by the naked eye. fa :

The Mediterranean fruit fly will attack citrus fruits, apples, pears,
plums, apricots, pomegranates, figs, blackberries, blueberries, canta-
loupes, cucumbers, grapes, tomatoes, beans of all kinds, peppers of all
kinds, squash, gourds, pumpkins, common maypop, and many other
fruits and vegetables. The preferred host of the Mediterranean fruit
fly is the peach. In Hawaii in 1914 an entomologist of the United
States Government from 178 one-half grown peaches which were pick-
ed up from the ground, reared 2929 fruit flies. You can readily see
that if the Mediterranean fruit fly became established in the State
of Georgia that our great peach industry would be placed in jeopardy.
_ The fruit fly has been found in Florida as far north as St. Augus-
tine, and Hawthorne, as far south on the east coast as Banyan, and
as far south on the west coast as Tampa. A large portion of Floridas
great citrus belt is included in this infested area, and it is costing the
Federal Government and the State of Florida millions of dollars to
eradicate this dangerous pest.. The people of the State of Florida have
lost millions of dollars in produce which they have been unable to
ship on account of the fly. This dangerous pest must be eradicated
from the North American continent or else the entire horticultural
and agricultural industries are threatened. The people of Florida are
thoroughly aroused, and are fighting as a people never have fought.

They realipe that the very foundation of the statethe citrus ana

/

vegetable industrieswill be completely destroyed unless the fly is
stamped out. In the infested areas, the citizens have formed com-
mittees and all host fruits and vegetables of the fly are being destroy-
ed. The only way to fight the fly is by starving it. No fruits and
vegetables in which the fly can propagate and carry over will be al-

lowed to ripen in the infested areas in Florida during the next five

months. ~ :

The State of Georgia, due to her geographical location, is in a very
dangerous position. I am sure that you have seen during the past five
or six months hundreds of truck loads of Florica citrus fruit which
was distributed to all parts of the State. In the majority of cases,
this fruit that was trucked in was either culled or fallen fruit. As the
fruit which has been attacked generally falls to the ground, a large
portion of this fruit might have been infested. a

It is now up to the State of Georgia to determine whether or not
we have an infestation.of the Mediterranean fruit fly. This should
be done as quickly as. possible, for the quicker this determination is
made, the brighter will be our chances for eradicating the pest should
an infestation be found. To this end, every man, woman and child
in the State of Georgia could be of great assistance by sending to the

Georgia State Board of Entomology, 332 State Capitol, Atlanta, Geor-

gia, any suspicious worms or flies. We have received wonderful co-
operation frm all parts of the State so far, and 1 trust that we will
continue to receive a large number of specimens.

A pamphlet showing the fruit fly in actual colors can be obtained
by writing the Board of Entomology. : ao
; M. S. YEOMANS,

State Entomologist.
