L.13. STATE CAPITOL

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MAY 9. 1920.

NUMBER 24.

At the last session of the Legislature in 1927, the Depaviinen
of Agriculture endorsed a bill providing for some changes i
_ the fertilizer law of the State of Georgia, making it very similar
_ to the fertilizer law of the State of Alabama. This bill passed

ment. The Senate had ample time to have acted on this bill.
. some unaccountable reason, a vote was never taken on the

ill
I am of the opinion that the Alabama fertilizer law gives
_ more adequate protection to the farmer in the purchase of his
fertilizers than the present Georgia fertilizer law.

The Department of Agriculture has been doing the best that
it could under the present fertilizer law of the State. We took
about 13,000 samples last year. This year we have already tak-

en something over 13,000 samples of fertilizer to be analyzed
and reported back to the farmer.
_ When the fertilizer comes up to the guaranteed analysis, we
write on the report Within the Law. When it falls below the
guaranteed analysis we show that on the report and show the

penalty it is subject to, and which one of the plant foods was |

_ short. We also show whether it fell down in commercial value
- and whether it fell down enough to be subject to a penalty on
this point. The maximum penalties, under the fertilizer law of
, Georgia, are 50 per cent of the purchase price of the fertilizer
plus the shortage in the commercial value of the fertilizer.
The fertilizer law of Georgia bases the commercial worth
of fertilizer solely on the chemical analysis. This is not a fair
test of the agricultural worth of the fertilizer. We should have

ee ee FERTILIZER LAWS

the House. It went to the Senate about a week before adjourn:

a law that informs the farmer what is in his fertilizer and the
amount of the different ingredients.

Under the present law, the manufacturers are required to
name the sources of plant food. They are not required to name
the proportionate amount of each. There can be a spoonful
of one ingredient to the ton and the law has been complied
with when you say that this ingredient is a part of the ferti-
lizer.

An investigation into the practices of the manufacturers

within the State and of fertilzer that is shipped into the State

of Georgia, shows that a great deal of worthless filler is used
in the manufacture of fertilizer. Some factories
worthless ingredients to artificially color their fertilizer and to

also use

make to stink. This filler, artificial coloring and stink ingre-

dients cost money. It is useless. It is foolish to continue it in

Georgia? Under the present fertilizer law of Georgia thes
practices can be resorted to and the law still be obeyed.
The Legislature meets about the last week in June.
represent the people.
Tf the readers of this aveiele are interested in the fertilizer
law to be passed, a law that will give a just and adequate pro-

_teetion to both the farmer and the manufacturer, talk to your

representatives about it. | .
Practically the same fertilizer bill that was introduced two

years ago and died by operation of the law in the Senate, will

be brought before the General Assembly this summer. If this
bill is written into law, I think we will really have taken a

step in the right direction. t

RAISING HEALTHIER PIGS

It has been found that Georgia far-
mers suffer heavier losses. from round-
worms than from: any other swine
trouble. This pest is wide-spread and
_ Causes constant losses to nearly every
- hog-raiser in the state unless proper
_ precautions are taken to avoid it.

_ Experiments have shown that if the
pigs can be raised to the age of four
months without becoming infested
_ with round-worms they will suffer but
- Small losses thereafter. Advantage is
taken of this fact by the system of pig
raising recommended by the Georgia
Experiment Station. The pigs are rais-
ed so as to avoid their becoming in-
fected with the microscopic eggs of the
worms until after they are four months
of age. After that age no special pre-
cautions need be observed.

It must be remembered that these
worm eggs are taken into the pig
through, usually on feed, grass or dirt.
The eggs may be on the floor or walls
of the pen or on the mud on age belly
_of the sow at nursing.

The sow must be put up in a clean
pen several days before farrowing. The
walls, floor, trough and other parts of

with boiling water in which lye has
been dissolved. Use one pound of lye
to 10 gallons of water. The sow should

warm water, especially on the belly, |
legs and feet, just before being placed
inthe clean pen. Clean bedding should
be supplied.
_ As soon as the pigs are large enough
to put on pasture they and the sow
should be loaded on a clean wagon and
_ carried toa pasture free from round-
worms and their eggs. If they are driv-
en to this pasture, they are likely to
pick up the eggs enroute on mud, dust
or grass. A pasture which has been
_ plowed and seeded since other pigs or
- hogs have been on it will be free from
infection. Oats, legume or rape pas-
tures are recommended. Keep the
pigs on clean pastures like this until
they are four months old.
. This system will not only prevent
losses from round-worms but also from
bull nose, navel ill, sore mouth and
other common diseases of swine. It is
urged that all hog raisers give this a
trial. If properly used it means prof-
itable pigs.
