VOL. 13. STATE CAPITOL
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 1929.

Fire, Noxious Weeds and Grasses
We have in Georgia a good law regulating the burning of
woods and fields. Did you know it was against the law for a
man to start a fire on his own place without first notifying
his neighbors? Did you know that there are certain times of
. the year that you can not even do this? The fire law of Geor-
gia is practically ignored.
The burning of woods and fields costs the State of Georgia
- millions of dollars each year, especially is this true in south
_ Georgia in the wiregrass section.
~ Tf you will look at any woodland in south (eciety where
fire has been kept out for ten years you will see a beautiful,
_ thick pine forest. Compare this with a place that is burned
over. every year and you will see that there are no trees and
the grass is ers destroyed and the land permanently
- injured.
_ There are certain sections of the Code that the Judges of
the Superior Courts are required to charge at each meeting of
the Grand Jury of the Counties. Would it not be a good idea
j]| for some Representative to introduce a bill this summer pro-
- viding that the Judge of each Superior Court charge the sec-
tions relative to putting out fires on our woodlands and fields?
_ Wouldnt it also be a good idea for the County police, in the
Counties where they have them, to try to enforce the laws in
. reference to the burning of the woods, the same as they try
to enforce the prohibition law?
The fire law of Georgia enforeed for ten years would pay
the State of Georgia more from reforestation than any single
crop that wg could plant. :
It is a common sight to ride over the country and see fields
abandoned, on account of Nut Grass, Johnson Grass or Ber-
muda Grass. What causes most of these noxious weeds and
grasses? Where do they come from? Most of them come ir
bought feeds and bought seed. We havent any seed law in
Georgia. There is a great. deal of cheating on seed. We have
numerous complaints of parties selling seed that do not germi-
nate properly. We have numrous complaints of parties selling
seed that are not true to type as recommended. Most of the
States have seed laws. Wouldnt it be a good thing for some
of our Senators or Representatives to introduce a seed law next
summer? -
Our farmers should be protected on the purchase of seed.
If you get the wrong kind of seed, or have trouble getting
a stand you can not expect to make expenses on that crop.
EUGENE TALMADGE.

and eggs are served at practically all eating places a traveler may visit. It
is pointed out that there is no substitute for eggs and nothing found to take
their place in foods. Eggs are served in some form at practically every meal

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1929.
some one wrote an article about putting cotton rows closer
together and leaving it thicker in the drill than we had before
the appearance of the boll weevil. I have been following this
advice for the past ten or twelve years and I find that it
pays. Before the boll weevil struck south Georgia, I used to
plant my cotton in four foot rows and chop it out to about 18
inches in the drill: With good seasons in the fall the cotton
would make on until the middle of October. Since the boll
weevil appeared, a cotton bloom after the 15th of July in
south Georgia generally fails to make any cotton. Crowding
the cotton both by close rows and by leaving from two to three
stalks to the hill about 12 inches apart will hasten the maturi-
ty of your cotton from ten days to two. weeks,
the land.
do not know how this woyld work in north Georgia in the
When the boll weevil first made its appearance in Georgia,
Have you ever noticed a thick oat field It ripens from ten :
days to two weeks before an oat field where oats are thin on
Another thing, plough your cotton out and out once a week.
Thick Cotton and Inoculation for Summer Legumes
clay lands; but I do know in the sandy lands of south Georgia
it is about the best poison we can use for the boll weevil.
There are a great many summer legumes planted in Georgia,
such as peas, beans, soy beans, o-too-tan beans and peanuts.
These legumes inoculate the soils themselves after being plant-
ed on the same jand the year before. On land where these le-
gumes have not been planted the seed should be inoculated.
The Chemical Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture
makes inoculations for these legumes mentioned: and several
others, and sells them to farmers at cost. The present cost of
this inoculation i is thirty cents per acre. If you intend planting
any of the above legumes on land that was not planted in le-
gumes last year, the best investment you could make would be
to inoculate your seed. You will think that there has been an
extra heavy load of fertilizer put under the crop if you have a
few rows planted without inoculation and Bompare them with
the ones that are inoculated.
-Do not forget to plant, cultivate properly and house all the:
feed you will need for next year. -
