Sine COVER CROPS"
: bee Aureus i Aide a trip from Ala rita to Manpower, Alabama,
with Mr. Sam Dunwoody, Commissioner of Agriculture of Alabama.
On our way over to Montgomery we stopped by the Experiment Sta-
tion at Auburn, | Alabama. The Director carried us over the farms of
. the Station and showed us several plats of cotton and corn which were
planted following Vetch. They also had some comparative plats of
cotton and corn which were planted on. ground where no winter cover
crop had been planted. I saw some plats of ground that would make _
as much as a bale and a half of cotton per acre where Vetch had been
turned under in March, and 500 pounds of 16 per cent acid enters :
ee 500 pounds of manure saltsapplied to the acre.
The Director also showed us some plats of corn that had been
splinter. after Vetch was turned under the first of March and the
same application of 500 pounds of 16 per cent acid and 500 pounds of
manure salts to the acre had been used, that would make as high as
45 or 50 bushels to the acre.
He then showed us some plats that were Slanted on ground that
had no cover crop under either the cotton or the corn, and a mixture
of 12090 pounds of acid and muriate of potash and nitrate of soda
had been applied to the acre. These plats were not half as good as_
the plats that had followed the Vetch. The Director then showed us
some plats where cotton and corn had been planted without. the
Vetch having been turned under in March and no fertilizer had been
used. Those plats where cotton and corn had followed Vetch without |
SCAN. fertilizer cf any kind were better than the plats that did not
e Eilow Vetch wire a application of 1200 pounds of fertilizer to the
acre had been used.
et I saw some similar experiments at ie Experiment Station at
- Rocky Ford, North Carolina. I saw these experiments about the last
of September when the crops were practically matured and they eave
the same results as the experiments at Auburn, Ala.
The best money that a farmer can spend this fall is to. get him a
three row drill and: drill either Vetch or Ahaeian peas between the
rows of his cotton. It will pay you better than an application of 1000
pounds.of high grade guano to the acre next spring. You want to turn
this under about the first of March. It rots very quickly, and leaves the oe
soil in fine condition for planting and cultivation.
Anyone who wishes further information about planting these cov-
_er crops may write to Dr. H. P. Stuckey, Director of the Experiment
Station at Experiment, Georgia, or Dr. S. A. Starr, Director of the
-Costal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton, Georgia. These men have
also made experiments with these cover crops and can give you good
suggestions as to the proper kind of seed to plant and the proper ~
time to plant, also the proper time to turn Wie crops under for the
best results.
I have never had the opportunity of ubeing experiments with
Austrian peas, but this is also a good legume, and from the infor-
mation I have had they store more nitrogen in the soil than the
Vetch. The greatest advantage secured from both of these crops is
the addition of humus as well as the storage of nitrogen in the soil.
.The Georgia Cotton Co-operative Association realizing the great
wood that can be obtained from the planting of these winter cover crops
and what it means to the permanent fertilization of the soil of Georgia.
-have made a contract whereby they will have 25 solid carloads of
Vetch for sale and distribution and 10 solid carloads of Austrian peas.
Nearly every farmer has one hand in the fall of the year who can
_not or will not pick cotton. Put this hand behind a three row Urill in
the cotton middles planting these winter legumes and you will find it.
the best investment you have ever made toward ee your soil
for next years crops. ~
Didnt you notice this year that your best spots of Cation: and
corn were where vegetable matter was turned under or where an old
stack of hay had been in the field? These cover crops will make. your
whole field an old hay stack spot. _.
