= St have just eecired: a report on the sales that were nade through
@ office force of the Bureau of Markets for the month of may.
reas sales do not include any sales that were made by publication
in the Market Bulletin. We have no way of keeping a record of sales |
that are made by advertisements in the Bulletin. We do keep an ac-
~ curate record of sales that are conducted by our field men assisted
by county agents and are made in ae office Bipoten comespondente,
telephone and telegraph messages. . st

Below i is a complete list of the Maye sales:
22 cars of Velvet Beans, $9,151.66.

"Velvet. beans did not bring as much as they were ae These 22
ears of beans ground into meal would have been worth at least -
$12, 000.00 as fertilizer. The nitrogen derived from velvet beans is,
just as good as the Nitrogen derived from cotton seed meal.

O-T60-Tan Beans, eC Gs $168. 50. S

This variety of bean has been selling for around five or six doe
per bushel. They are very scarce in Georgia. If planted right away

they will do fairly well and it might be a good idea for the farmers
8 plant a few more of this variety. oe bean.

I note an item
. Velvet bean hulls, L..C. L. $64. 00.

. I dont know what the man wanted with these eelvet pean hulls, :
put. ground uP it is possibly a better filler than cotton seed hulls.

Cabbage, two cars, $1,492.00.

This ought to be increased next spring to at least. 20 cars in 1 April
and 10 in May.

_89 cars of corn, $18,531.16. os
J tried my best to get the farmers not to sell. their corn last fall
i hen: it was down around sixty cents per bushel. Of course some of

corn until after Christmas. It has brought more after Christmas. for

- the. past ten years than it has in the fall monhs. Z

tne sale of eggs of which we have kept no record;
Two cars of: hay, $487.00. *
This number should be multiplied sede There. is a lot of

hay shipped into Georgia from other States. The farmers in middle
Georgia and in north Georgia should grow fitore alfalfa.

Oat Straw, one car, $153. 00. ee

"This item leads the list, and we can crow a Tittle. over it.

The last item is 47 cars of Hogs, $58, 888.34, |

~The total of all of these products is $217,906. 84,

Of course the Bureau of Markets does not sell all of the diversi-
fied farm products that are sold in Georgia. I am.of the opinion

that we sell only about one-third, so you see that multiplying these

figures it runs a good deal over $600,000.00 per month. Although

May is considered the dullest month of the year for the sale of farm

products it led the sales for the past six months.

We-are no longer dependent upon cotton in Georgia as a single
-erop. The above list of farm products can not be grown
profitably on a tenant system. It calls for a farmer with his: family

back on the farm putting forth intelligent. effort, and if this pro-
gram is kept up for the next five years in Georgia you will see the

morale.- of our farmers

~ fertility of our soil cpeoved and the

strengthened.

PLAN IN JUNE. TO MEET =

SEPTEMBER'S EXPENSES

Certain months of the year bring
heavier expenditures than others in
most families, June is often one of
these, with graduations, weddings,
and vacation plans. September may

be even worse. Vacation has cost
more than was expected; school-
books must be bought, and school

a - elothes. If children are going away new generation of this

~.to school or college, a whole outfit

is needed, in addition to tuition fees,

books and railroad fares. September

. is an. income and sometimes a local
: a ae month,

If you have not already Gadested
your annual intome, you will find it
difficult to make ends meet during
these peaks of expense. It is too
late now to do much about June; but

_ September is 13 weeks distant, and if
~... you plan carefully for those weeks
233 you will at least be better off than

ak

should ask the Bureau of Home
Economics of the United States. De-
partment of Agriculture what to do.
You. would be advised, first, to list
all the expenses now expected for
June, July, August and September.
Put down everything. Perhaps you
have counted on a vacation and some
_ new vacation clothes for the family.
Put it all) down. Add up the estimate
for each month. Compare the sepa-
-rate totals with your monthly income
or the grand total with your funds
for the four months.
: Your estimate probably ceca
what. you will have. What shall be
given up? Some expenses are un-
-.- avoidable. You have doubtless _al-
- ready contracted to pay a certain
rent or its cequivalent. Your tele-
_ phone rate, insurance premiums, and
other items are fixed. Sometimes,
- however, the grocery bill can be
reduced by buying lower priced but
_ equally nourishing foods. Perhaps
you have planned too expensive a
summer. You can all have a change
and a good time at lower cost if you
ae about. <pnevend of See up

CONTROLLING THE CURCULIO

- TO PREVENT PEACH DAMAGE
: Supplementary control measures
against the plum curculio, or peach].
worm, must often. be used in addi-
tion to the customary spraying or
dusting with lead arsenate, if a
large cull pile of wormy peaches at,
harvest time is to be prevented.

The United States Department of :

ia hicuibane considers that the most
effective of these supplementary con-
trol measures is the collection and
destruction of peach. drops. A
majority of the small peaches that
are punctured. by. the curculio early.
in the season fall to the ground with-
in a few weeks after the.calyxes, or
shucks, have been pushed off. The
worms remaining in these, if they
are not picked - up and destroyed,

later reach maturity, push their way

and enter the soil to transform
adult beetles, thus starting a
destructive |

out,
into

pest...
_Three collections of drops? will

get about 90 per cent of the worms)

that fall to the ground in peaches
during the season. The first collec-
tion should be made about one month
after full bloom: and the other two
at intervals of about five or six days.
All drops should be made harmless as
soon as collected, either by burying

in a trench 18 to 24 inches. below the }-
surface of the soil and covering with

a layer of quicklime before filling
in the soil or by sabmereive them i in
boiling water. >

Another precaution for keeping
down the number of adult beetles is
to burn over woodlands and brush
near the peach orchard during the
winter months. This may not always
be advisable, but prunings, rubbish,

and piles should not be allowed to |

remain and harbor curculios.
Disking under the spread of Weach

trees in the orchard from about May

10 to the last of June will destroy
This should
be done as frequently as_ possible.
Jarring the trees in the spring en-
ables the orchardist to collect many
adult beetles, which are then killed
by placing in a can of coal oil. The
regular spraying and dusting sched-
ules should be followed as well as
the above measures.
