THE PEACH GROWER-READ
_ At a meeting of a committee of peach growers recently in my of-
fice, the following recommendations were unanimously made, to be
adopted governing the packing and labelling and shipping of peaches
this year:
On all of the very early varieties of peaches up to but not in-
cluding the Carmens, a minimum size of 1 5-8 inches in diameter
was recommended for U.S. Fancy, U. S. No 1, and U. S. No. 2. All
under this size shall be labelled and graded as Unclassified.
Beginning with and including Carmens, Georgia Belles and El-
bertas the minimum size of 2 inches was unanimously recommended
for all classif.ed fruit. The minimum size for Hileys U. S. No. 1s
and U. S. No. 2s shall be 1 7-8 inches in diameter to be classified,
but U. S. Fancy Hileys must have a 2 inch minimum. All peaches
not meeting these requirements must be shipped as_ unclassified
and so marked. There was a strong argument advanced for all
peaches falling below U. S. No. 2 to be branded as Cuills. Phe
term Unclassified, however, was recommended.
The Committee recommended that the railroads demand a cash
payment of the freight on all Unclassified? peaches shipped.
Every peach man that reads these rules knows what it will take
to make this class of fruit.
One striking occurrence of the meeting yesterday in my office
was a statement made by Mr. P. J. A. Berckmans, of Mayfield, that
he had shipped 100 per cent U. S. Fancy peaches for the past sever-
al years. I asked him the point blank question what those peaches
had brought him. His answer was that good business forbade him
telling. But you could tell from the look on his face that the dif-
ference he had received from the ordinary grades shipped had put
a smile there that would not wear off. I learned this morning that
the variation last year in New York City between U. S. Fancy and
U. S. No. 1s was from $1.00 to $1.75 per crate.
I asked Mr. Berckmans what had been the main factor in produc-
ing these U. S. Fancys for him. H's answer was as follows: I have
rigidly thinned my peaches to eight inches spaced between the peach
Mr. Berckmans further stated that this was the best working and
the best fertilization that he gave his crop any time during the year.
The time to thin your peaches is when you notice two distinct
sizes of peaches on the trees. Do not wait for the May drop, the
smaller peach will probably drop off in the May drop; but by that
time it has taken some of the size away from the larger peach. If
you wait for the May drop, you will never get through thinning
your peaches.
In conclusion, just a word to the peach mans wife. If your hus-
band doesnt read this, read it to him or mention it to him every ~
meal for the next week or ten days. That is the best time to worry
a manis to call his attention to something at meal time that he
knows ke ought to do.
Another word to the small peach grower of Georgia. The small
peach grower is the one man that can produce good quality fruit. A
small orchard is largely worked by its owner and his family. Set the
big peach grower a pattern in good auality fruit. Yow can do it
better than he can because he has to depend upon hired labor.
I have received several letters in iento to editorials written in
the Bulletin. Let me see how many peach men and peach mens
wives I can hear from on this one. ;
The above recommendations were made by the following com-
mittee: W. F. Turner, Macon; J. H. Hoover, U. S. Dept. of Agricul-
ture, Atlanta; O. E. Pearson, Fort Valley; J. H. Hicks, Fort Valley;
W. P. Hill, Greenville; J. H. Powell, Newnan; C. W. Matthews,
Woodland; W. C. Bewley, General Manager, Georgia Peach Grow-
ers Exchange, Macon; David Arnold, Hampton; James R. Atwater,
Thomaston; O. G. Strauss, Federal Department of Agriculture, Or-
lando, Fla.; P. J. A. Berckmans, Augusta; J. L. Benton, Monticello;

MARKET BUREAU OPPOSES IN-
CREASE IN. HAY RATES.
A petition has been filed by the
Bureau of Markets, with the Inter-
state Commerce Cimmission at Wash-
ington requesting that the proposed
classification ratings on hay, shucks,
etc. which was scheduled to go into
effect April 30th, be suspended and
a thorough investigation be made as
to the reasonableness and justifica-
tion of the proposed rates.
The new rates proposed for hay
and shucks would increase the freight
rates from 30 to 50 per cent, depend-
ing upon the length of the haul of
these commodities from Georgia
points to interstate destinations.
The proposed rates are part of a
program of the railroads. to revise
classification ratings on some 1,200
or more items of freight, many of
are agricultural products.
Practically all proposed changes pro-
vide for increases in rates.
The Bureau of Markets has in
their office a rate clerk who is always
at work helping the farmers get bet-
ter railroad rates. He carefully jin-
vestigates the rates to the different
Markets, endeavoring to save the
farmer money on the things he ships.
Our rate clerk is at your service at.
all times. Any farmer may feel free
to call on him in regard to any freight
rate on which he desires information.
A. D. JONES, Director.
