Georgia Grown producers acknowledge their military experience

tobacco farmer in Hahira who attended West Point and served during the Persian Gulf War in 1991. He said the impact of his service still serves him 30 years later.

"My dad didn't fix anything until it was

broke, so the whole idea of preventative main-

brought to the farm," Wetherington said. "It's

not a 21st-century idea, but things like how

we're organized and try to do things are a

part of it. My guys here will tell you that what

they do would have a military twist to it."

Governor's Office of Highway Safety, GDA urge drivers to be aware of slow-moving farm vehicles

Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black joined state highway safety officials and farmers at the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo on Oct. 19 to urge motorists to slow down and be aware on rural roads to prevent accidents involving farm vehicles.
The agencies made their annual Yield Behind the Wheel call for safe driving at the Expo. Alan Poole, director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, reminded people that more farm equipment is on the road now with the fall harvest season in full swing. As farmers work to get their crops to market, Poole said drivers need to pay attention when traveling on rural roads.
"Fewer vehicles on the road can tempt some to drive faster but faster speeds often lead to mistakes behind the wheel, which can lead to someone dying or being seriously injured in a crash," Poole said. "Mistakes happen every day on the road, which is why driving the speed limit, wearing a seat belt and paying attention to the road can save lives and prevent injuries in the event of a crash."
Poole noted grim statistics on the number of crashes involving farm and construction equipment nationwide. According to the Federal Highway Administration, rural areas accounted for 31 percent of vehicle miles traveled in the United States in 2020, but 43 percent of all traffic fatalities took place on rural roads.
In Georgia, 10 people have been killed in 326 crashes involving farm and construction vehicles in the state over five years from 20172021, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Poole

Georgia Cooking: Smoked Sausage and Turnip Green Cornbread Stuffing Bites

Georgia Grown Chef Olivia Rader demonstrated her original recipe for these cornbread stuffing bites, at the 2022 Sunbelt Agricultural Expo in Moultrie last week.
Ingredients 10 ounces turnip greens, chopped
(about 8 cups) 1 tsp vegetable or canola oil 1 link Andouille or other smoked
sausage (about 3.5 ounces), diced into 1/8-inch cubes 2 cups cornbread stuffing mix, divided 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 2 eggs, slightly beaten 4 Tbsps butter, melted 1/3 cup grated Thomasville Tomme cheese 1 clove minced garlic Pinch red pepper flakes, optional
Instructions Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Heat oil in a small pan over medium heat until almost smoking. Add diced sausage and brown until most of the fat has been rendered, about 5 minutes. Transfer to small plate lined with a paper towel and let cool.
Once water is boiling, blanch greens

for 2 minutes, in batches if necessary. Shock in ice water and let sit until cold.
Place 1 cup of the cornbread stuffing mix into food processor, process into fine breadcrumbs. Transfer to a bowl and set aside. This will be the breadcrumb coating.
Drain turnip greens very thoroughly, removing ice pieces. Using your hands, squeeze out as, then place into the food processor and pulse until finely chopped.
Place chopped turnip greens into a large mixing bowl. Add remaining cup of cornbread stuffing mix, eggs, butter, cheese, garlic, red pepper flakes if using, and cooled sausage. Mix thoroughly.
Shape mixture into balls about 1 inch in diameter until all of the mixture is used up. Coat each ball in reserved cornbread stuffing breadcrumbs. Place on a 1813 inch pan, spaced at least inch apart. Cover and refrigerate at least one hour.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 15 minutes, until balls are firm to the touch. Serve with Comeback Sauce.

1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 1/2 tsps ketchup 1 tsp apple cider vinegar 1-2 tsps fresh lemon juice 1 tsp spicy brown mustard 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp hot sauce (we love Bootlikker or
Petreaux's) 1/2 tsp finely minced fresh garlic 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp onion powder or salt 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

GDA to offer Honey Bee removal certification

The implementation of the new structural pest control license category for honey bee removal (HBR) has been in the works since the intention to revise the Rules of the Structural Pest Control Commission (SPCC) was announced in 2019. Before this rule amendment, a Household Pest Control license was required to perform honey bee removals. The SPCC and the Georgia Department of Agriculture created the new license category to lessen the burden on HBR operators while protecting consumers and pollinators! As the compliance deadline of January 1, 2023, approaches, here is some basic information about getting licensed in HBR. Certification requires completion of SPCC-approved training, participation in at least three HBR jobs, and passing a certification exam. The SPCC Honey Bee Control and Removal workgroup published a certification manual to help prepare for the exam. A link to the HBR Certification Application, the HBR Manual, and other important resources will follow in the break out section. The application must be accompanied with

a check or money order for the $100 certification fee for new certified operators. New certified operators must also provide a copy of a secure and verifiable document and complete the OCGA 50-36-1(e)(2) Affidavit to verify their lawful presence. No fee is required for those adding HBR to their certified operator license. Before engaging in honey bee removal, a company license in the operational category of HBR is required. Structural pest control companies already licensed can use the Add a Category Form to add HBR

to their license. Like the other categories, a Designated Certified Operator (DCO) in honey bee removal is required. New companies will need to submit an HBR company license application. They must have a DCO in honey bee removal, provide proof of insurance, and pay $170 in fees before a company license will be issued. There is no registered employee license in HBR. Anyone engaging in HBR must be certified in the category or under the direct supervision of someone who is.

The HBR license is limited to the control and removal of honey bees. Control of other bees requires a Household Pest Control (HPC) license. A license in HBR does not allow for the use of pesticides. Using pesticides to control a colony of honey bees still requires a license in HPC.
Chapter 620-9 of the Rules of the Structural Pest Control Commission also outlines requirements for performing a removal, including contract requirements and minimum standards that a removal must satisfy. If you have any questions about the new

Highway Safety: Caution, awareness encouraged when driving near ag equipment

"We would like to increase yields in agriculture, but we would also like to increase the yield in the quality of life by going to a zero-sum of road-related accidents involving farm equipment," Black said. "When passenger vehicles and farm equipment mix from time to time, the results are devasting. It's not only property damage but also human life. That is what we are seeking. We want to improve quality of life by increasing that yield this year with the goal always of zero farm accidents on the road."
Black said farmers need to follow state

law to have orange triangle-shaped signs on their vehicles and trailers along with amber flashers. For drivers, He added, everyone needs to watch out, slow down and follow safe passing maneuvers.
Leslie Jones of Telfair County spoke about a situation he found himself in this year on a rural county road near his farm. He was driving his tractor from one field to the next when the shift fork came loose in the transmission and jammed into a gear. The tires locked immediately, and the tractor stood in the middle of the road.
Jones said his wife was following him in a truck, and they eventually got the tractor

off the road. Still, he was aware of the potentially dangerous situation, given there was no warning or clear view for oncoming traffic.
"There was no way for me to get off the road, and if someone had been running 60 mph up behind me, they would hit me. If that happened, it would knock me out, and with

the tractor being that big, it could easily have turned over on me in the ditch."
Jones added that some farm machinery could be wider than the lane, and they must be cautious of oncoming traffic and avoid striking signposts on the road's shoulder. He said a little patience can go a long way.
"We don't want to be on the road, but we have to be to get from place to place to get our crops out," Jones said. "I just pray people will slow down and be conservative when they come up to us."

Military Experience: Lessons learned while serving translate to business

in Alaska. Along the way, he started a concrete pouring business.
"I started my concrete business with a hammer and a shovel, and within three years, I had a dump truck, a skid loader, a trailer for all my forms and tools, and a couple of guys working for me," Petraszewsky said.
He left the concrete business to spend more time with his family and worked as a machinist, another skill he gave credit to what he learned in the Navy, but Petraszewsky said he wanted to do something else.
He said he got a taste for hot sauce from eating food served in the Navy. "The food was so bland, I had to put some hot sauce on it to have any flavor, and I always liked pickled jalapeos, and have that little spice."
Petraszewsky started Petreaux's Gourmet Hot Sauces in 2010 from his home in Covington. He offers six sauces ranging from a sweet Peach Habanero to Lethal Dose made with ghost and Carolina Reaper peppers.
He also sells table hot sauce named for the USS Midway, on which he participated in the evacuation of the US embassy in Saigon in April 1975.
"From being in the Navy and traveling all over the world and all these different coun-

tries, it's been something I've enjoyed," he said. "With all of these occupations, too, it's been an adventurous life."
Ivan Meeks operates Thousand Hills Ranch in Barnesville with his wife, Wanda, where they raise beef cattle using traditional ranching methods. Their cattle are pasture-raised and pasture-finished on natural forages that include native grasses and legumes.
On their website, the Minks add they provide a "free-choice supplement" developed by a bovine nutrition specialist to complement their natural forages. "Our cattle choose what they want to eat just like we do!" according to their website.
Minks served 11 years in the Army, leaving as a sergeant specializing in tactical communications. He said the one thing he learned from the military is that no matter how much information you may have for an operation, always expect change and learn to adapt to that change.
"Look forward and try to see how things are going and expect the unexpected, so to speak," he said. "That's the same thing you do in business, and instead of getting excited about it, you react to it the best way you can to survive."

Minks said he is doing just that as supply chain problems and high input costs have made him adjust his operations. They sold part of their land and reduced their herd. Minks said they are working with other Georgia producers to add pork and chicken to their product selections online.
Minks agreed that the discipline he learned from the Army is essential but he said nothing is guaranteed.
"Discipline comes into that. You make a decision, you choose to do something, and then that's what you do," Meeks said. "And as long as you obey man's laws and God's laws, there's an opportunity for success."
Zach Thomas said the military provided him with the skill sets to be successful. He attended West Point and served in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY.
He operates Appalachian Foothills Farm near Cedartown, the same farm he grew up on and where he returned to in 2013 to raise his family. The farm had raised commercial chickens for many years. Thomas said he hopes to bring life back to the farm. He is partnering with another farmer to raise bees along with some cattle.

"Self-discipline and work ethic are the big things for me. In the military, you may have to do things you don't want to, and it goes that way with the farm," Thomas said. "There are days where you have things you don't want to do, but you have to mustered up wherewithal to make it happen."
He and his wife have seven children aged three to 18 years old. Thomas said part of the reason they moved back to the family farm is to provide some "intentional hardships" for his children with the goal of farm work providing life lessons to persevere through difficult times.
Thomas explained perseverance was what he learned growing up and instilled in him in the Army and is also part of his faith people can grow during the bad times, and there is progress during bad times.
"You've got to mentally and emotionally prepare for that and understand it's also a growing season even though the growth isn't upward and outward," Thomas said. "What is actually happening is underneath the surface. The roots are growing deeper. The way I relate to that is character, stamina, and perseverance. All those things are improving in those difficult and winter seasons."

Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel thru Georgia promoting the Peach State's #1 industry, agriculture! Last fall, my family and I traveled to a town that's too good to be in just one state! On the northern border of our state sits the twin cities of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee. There's a dotted blue line painted to show the state line, which runs through the back corner of a grocery store on one side of the street and a brewery on the other.
The brewery is made of different colored bricks in each state. The fire hydrant out front that's on the line is painted red on the Georgia side and some other color on the northern side. Not only does the main street change names in each state, but so does the river as it travels across the line on its way north. It's the Toccoa River in Georgia and the Ocoee River in Tennessee.
People in the area used to work in the copper mines in the Copper Basin that operated until the late 1980's. As a reminder, the visitor's bureau gives out copper pennies made from ore mined in the area to visitors.

Pumpkin Pie in a Bag
Ingredients 1-Gallon Ziploc freezer bag Scissors 2 2/3 cups cold milk (for something different try
goat's milk) 2 packages (4 serving size) instant vanilla
pudding mix 1 can (15 ounces) solid-pack pumpkin 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground ginger Graham cracker crumbs 25 small cups and spoons 1 can whipped topping
Instructions Combine the milk and instant pudding in the Ziploc bag. Remove the air and Ziploc it shut.

Squeeze and kneed with hands until blended for 1 minute. Add the pumpkin, cinnamon, and ginger. Remove the air and Ziploc it shut. Squeeze and kneed with hands until blended for 2 minutes. Place 1/2 a tablespoon of crushed graham crackers in the bottom of small cups. (You can have one child crush graham crackers in a Ziploc bag while another child is mixing the pumpkin pie.) Cut corner of freezer bag and squeeze pie filling into cups. Garnish with whipped topping, if desired. Add a spoon and enjoy!

Vendors and visitors braved cooler temperatures during last
month's Sunbelt Agricultural Expo, the largest agriculture trade show in the Southeast, but enjoyed the warmth of being back together and seeing the latest in farm technology on display. Live field presentations gave attendees a chance to
