Structural Pest Division Director Derrick Lastinger awarded hall of fame recognition by industry group

Derrick Lastinger, director of the Structural Pest Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, became the 25th person named to the Association of Structural Pest Control Regulatory Officials Hall of Fame on Aug. 18.
The award recognizes those individuals whose contributions and exemplary service to the association have improved the professionalism of regulation of the structural pest control industry.
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black said the recognition is "so well deserved. Derrick Lastinger is a trusted adviser and stellar public servant."
Over his 25 years of service with the GDA, Lastinger's tenure has been filled with innovation and distinguished accomplishments for the department, the state of Georgia, the structural pest control industry and national state lead agency policies.
In announcing the award, the ASPCRO made note of Lastinger's "willingness to take risks, accept responsibility, be innovative, and embrace change." These traits have provided the structural pest control industry nationally with an extraordinary number of policies that protect consumers and the environment while

Lastinger was appointed to the Georgia Structural Pest Control Commission in July 2010, serving as vice-chairman since 2012. He took the lead on development and implementation of 28 industry guidance documents explaining rules and regulations on hard-to-understand laws.
The topic of spray foam insulation, termite inspections and how the Georgia Building Code was amended to allow for visual inspections is one of many initiatives Lastinger introduced in Georgia that created a standard for the nation. His work with the commission members has made Georgia a national leader in developing regulations that ensure the structural pest management industry has all the tools needed.
He has been involved with changing the Environmental Protection Agency's take on rodent bait and fumigation, making these products available to the industry's toolbox. Most recently, he took the lead on Georgia's new rule on Honeybee Control and Removal, a new structural pest license category.

Stephen Shimp is a busy man these days. As executive director of the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, he over-

sees preparations for the Georgia National Fair. He said that by all accounts, this will be the biggest fair since 2019.
Shimp explained they had a good crowd at last year's fair after the event was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. In 2021, the fair organizers recommended masks and vaccinations for those who attended, and they modified the fairgrounds to bring all aspects of the traditional fair experience.
Public health guidelines will be in place again. But as the public understands the coronavirus better and new vaccines and treatments are available, Shimp said people are ready to get out and do things again.
"We're looking forward to the days when we don't have to worry about COVID, but today, we still do," he said. "It's been a tough time for us, but we're thankful we're in a position now where we can all get together."
The gates will open on the 33rd year of the Georgia National Fair at 3 p.m. on Oct. 6 and continue each day through Oct. 16.
Throughout the fair's 10-day run, visitors will have a chance to experience live entertainment, agricultural and livestock competitions, food and the midway.
Several music acts will make their Georgia National Fair debut this year, with the 1970s rock band Foghat performing on opening night. Other acts include rapper/singer Lecrae; Rocketman, an Elton John tribute show;

Mercer Medical Moment: Maternal health disparities

It's 2022 in the Unit-
ed States, and the field of medicine continues to grow in healthcare research, interventions, and access. However, despite these continual advancements the state of Georgia is suffering from an ongoing crisis: maternal health disparities. According to CDC's America's Health Rankings and the American Civil Liberties Union, Georgia is one of the most dangerous states in America for a pregnant woman, and mothers face the greatest percentage of pregnancy and postpartum health risks. What is maternal mortality? "Maternal mortality" is the number of deaths from any cause related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management (excluding accidental or incidental causes) during pregnancy and childbirth or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, per 100,000 live births. What is Georgia's maternal mortality rate? Georgia's maternal death rate for white women is twice that of the national rate, and Black women are three times as likely as

their Caucasian counterparts to face maternal death.
According to CDC data published through America's Health Rankings, Georgia's maternal death rate reached 66.3 deaths per 100,000 live births from 2013 to 2017, as opposed to the national maternal death rate of 29.6. This means pregnant Georgians were two times more likely to die during their pregnancy and up to one year postpartum than the average American. Why is Georgia's maternal mortality rate
so high?
Access to care is still a central problem for rural women. According to the 2019 House of Representatives Study Committee on Maternal Mortality and ACLU: at least 75 counties in the state have no ob-
stetrics and gynecology physicians, a vital healthcare resource for all women, especially pregnant and postpartum mothers. 93 rural counties have no hospital with a labor and delivery unit (a reflection of 40 percent of all labor and delivery facilities in Georgia closing over the last 20 years). two-thirds of rural births in Georgia occur outside of the mother's home county. there are no rural counties in the state with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist. These statistics represent direct barriers to rural women receiving prenatal care, high-risk obstetrics services, and postpartum care. Which coincides with the down trending CDC ranking of Georgia as the 47th state (from 45th) in overall women's access to care in 2021.

To make matters worse, many of the state's low-income areas do not have sufficient funding for proper women's healthcare. Rural women in Georgia have a significantly higher mortality rate than in urban Georgia, and rural Black women have double the maternal mortality rate of rural white women. Rural residents face disparities associated with transportation, supportive organizations, and available social services, leading to insufficient and dramatically different prenatal and postpartum care. Looking ahead on how Georgia can

There is an immediate and dire need to: obtain a better understanding of the causes
of maternal death in Georgia. increase the number of health care work-
ers with advanced degrees in underserved areas (such as supporting Mercer University School of Medicine's Mission to educate physicians and health professionals to meet the primary care and healthcare needs of rural and medically underserved areas in Georgia). develop programs to support women who are most at-risk for maternal mortality. raise awareness of the issues surrounding pregnancy-associated death. create new models of maternal health care delivery in rural areas. promote changes in systems, communities, and individuals to reduce the number of deaths.

"We're running out of room for pigs, goats and sheep, but that's a good problem to have," Shimp said. "It's off the charts, and we're looking forward to having them come on in and show their projects."

Question: Are hairnets a requirement when working with food?
Answer: The retail food operations that we regulate include grocery stores, convenience stores, retail bakeries, and meat and seafood markets. Our retail regulations require food employees to wear hair restraints such as hats, hair coverings or nets, beard restraints, and clothing that covers body hair, that are designed and worn to effectively keep their hair from contacting exposed food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.
Hair restraints are required when employees are working with unpackaged food, food-contact surfaces of equipment and utensils, and clean equipment or utensils.
All restraints must be worn in such a way to effectively keep hair from contacting food, clean equipment, utensils, and unwrapped single-use articles.
Head coverings worn correctly such as hair nets, hats, caps, visors or scarves can accomplish this requirement. Beard restraints, clothing and/or hair coverings that cover body hair are also required.

Effective Hair Restraint at Retail Guidance

Consumers are particularly sensitive to food contaminated by hair. Hair can be both a direct and indirect vehicle of contamination. Food employees may contaminate their hands when they touch their hair. A hair restraint keeps dislodged hair from ending up in the food and may deter employees from touching their hair.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Retail Food Sales Regulations 40-7-1-.06(4) describes the required use of hair restraints and the exemptions.

40-7-1-.06 Hygienic Practices
(4) Effectiveness.
(a) Except as provided in (b) of this section, FOOD EMPLOYEES shall wear hair restraints such as hats, hair coverings or nets, beard restraints, and clothing that covers body hair, that are designed and worn to effectively keep their hair from contacting exposed FOOD; clean EQUIPMENT, UTENSILS, and LINENS; and unwrapped SINGLE-SERVICE and SINGLE-USE ARTICLES.

When is a Hair Restraint Required?
Hair restraints are required when food employees are working with unpackaged food, food-contact surfaces of equipment and utensils, and clean equipment or utensils.
What Would Be Considered an Adequate Hair Restraint?
All restraints must be worn in such a way to effectively keep hair from contacting food, clean equipment, utensils, and unwrapped single-use articles.

(b) This section does not apply to FOOD EMPLOYEES such as counter staff who only serve BEVERAGES and wrapped or PACKAGED FOODS, hostesses, and wait staff if they present a minimal RISK of contaminating exposed FOOD; clean EQUIPMENT, UTENSILS, and LINENS; and unwrapped SINGLE-SERVICE and SINGLE-USE ARTICLES.

USDA to issue first pecan forecast for 2022 crop
ATHENS During the last week of September, pecan growers will receive a survey from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Information from this survey will be used to forecast pecan production for 2022.
"The pecan industry is an important part of U.S. agriculture, especially in southern states, and it is crucial for us to have accurate data about this key sector of the economy," said Anthony Prillaman, director of the NASS Southern Regional Field Office. "Around 2,600 producers from across the country including more than 350 in Georgia will be contacted to accurately measure 2022 acreage and production for pecans. The data collected from this survey will help set pecan acreage and production estimates at both the state and U.S. level."
As an alternative to mailing the survey back and to help save both time and money, growers will have the option to respond to the survey securely online via the Respondent Portal at agcounts.usda.gov. Growers who have not responded by Sept. 29 will be contacted for a telephone or in person interview by a NASS representative.
NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified. Survey results will be published in the Crop Production report, to be released on Oct. 12.

Healthy tarragon chicken salad with Georgia pecans

Ingredients
Salad 3 lbs bone-in, skin-on
chicken breasts 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 cup celery, chopped 3 Tbsp. Georgia Pecans,
toasted and chopped Dressing 1/4 cup light mayonnaise 1/4 cup plain yogurt 1 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 3 Tbsp. fresh tarragon, roughly

Directions
Salad Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Place chicken on a parchment-lined baking pan, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
Bake for 35 minutes, or until internal temperature registers 165 degrees F on a meat thermometer.
Once chicken has cooled, remove skin and meat from bones and chop into chunks (you should have about 3 cups).

Dressing In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, yogurt, lemon juice,
mustard and tarragon.
Add chicken, celery and pecans to dressing ingredients. Combine well and season with salt and pepper to taste.

The Carroll kids (Andrew 9, Atticus 7, Abigail 6 and Athena 4) of Talking Rock started a seedling project back in February 2022. Andrew presented the seedling project for his Cloverbud Project Achievement with 4H. The project was a huge success growing into the cherry tomato shown in the picture. The tomato plant grew over 11 feet tall. The kids shared their success by gifting the seedlings to friends and family. The kids are active in their local 4H organization.

Be aware of plant species that are toxic to cats and dogs

Every pet owner has probably asked their pet "What do you have in your mouth?!" at least once or twice it's an essential part of pet ownership. That's why responsible pet ownership also includes knowing what houseplants or common flowers may be dangerous or even fatal to your pets.
To help pet owners know which plants in their household may be cause for concern, particularly when ingested, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension has put together a list of some common culprits. If your pet gets ahold of something you think may be poisonous and begins exhibiting concerning symptoms, call your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at 888.426.4435.
1. Amaryllis (Amaryllis spp.) Amaryllis contains a substance known as lycorine, which may cause vomiting or diarrhea. Contact with sap or other parts of the plant may also cause a skin rash. 2. Autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) Ingestion of autumn crocus can result in serious illness or death in dogs and cats. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and shock. Ingestion can also result in multi-organ damage. 3. Bay laurel or sweet bay (Laurus nobilis) Bay laurel contains eugenol and other essential oils that can cause gastrointestinal distress.

4. Caladium (Caladium spp.) Caladium contains particles in its sap and juices that can irritate the mouth and cause swelling, drooling or other issues with mouth pain or difficulty breathing. 5. Calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) Calla lilies also cause mouth irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing. 6. Cardinal flower (Lobelia spp.) Cardinal flower contains a substance called lobeline that leads to heart rhythm disturbances, vomiting, abdominal pain and other issues in cats and dogs. 7. Castor bean (Ricinus communis) Castor beans are extremely toxic because they contain the highly lethal substance ricin, which prevents cells from making proteins that are essential to keeping the body functioning. Symptoms typically develop 12 to 48 hours after ingestion and include excessive thirst, loss of appetite and coordination, weakness and difficulty breathing among other symptoms. Encounters with even small amounts often prove lethal. The spiky red or pink seedpods of the castor bean plant gradually dry out until they break open and reveal toxic seeds. 8. Cyclamen (Cyclamen spp.) Cyclamen can lead to gastrointestinal distress and skin rashes when it comes in contact with pets. 9. Daffodil (Narcissus spp.) Daffodils also contain lycorine, potentially causing vomiting and diarrhea when ingested, as well as a skin rash if pets come in contact with the plant. 10. Day lily (Hemerocallis spp.) Many species of lily are extremely dangerous for cats. Day

11. Dieffenbachia or dumbcane (Dieffenbachia seguine)

12. Easter lily, Oriental lily (Lilium spp.) Easter lilies can be extremely toxic to cats, causing vomiting, kidney failure, inappetance and even death. They are not known to be a threat to dogs. 13. Elephant ear (Colocasia esculenta) Elephant ear can lead to mouth pain, swelling, difficulty breathing and other similar mouth-related symptoms when ingested. It can also cause skin rashes when it comes in contact with pets. 14. English ivy (Hedera spp.) English ivy contains hederagenin, which can cause vomiting, abdominal pain and hypersalivation when ingested, as well as skin rashes when pets come in contact with it. The foliage is more toxic than the berries. 15. Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) Foxglove contains cardiac glycosides, which are extremely dangerous and can cause cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and death. 16. Hyacinth (Hyacinthus spp.) Ingestion of hyacinth by pets may lead to vomiting, diar-

20. Mistletoe (Phoradendron spp.) Mistletoe contains a substance called toxalbumin, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing and low heart rate. 21. Oleander (Nerium oleander) Oleander contains cardiac glycosides and ingestion can lead to diarrhea, colic, abdominal pain, drooling and even death. 22. Philodendron (Monstera deliciosa) Ingestion of philodendron can lead to oral irritation and pain, swelling of the mouth, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. It can also cause a rash if pets come in contact with the leaves. In addition to vomiting and oral issues, the philodendron leaves can cause a rash on pets.

23. Rhododendron azalea (Rhododendron spp.) Rhododendron contain a neurotoxin called grayantoxin that interferes with muscle, cardiac and nerve function. Ingestion of this plant can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, weakness, coma, hypotension, cardiovascular collapse and death. 24. Sago palm (Cycas revoluta) The sago palm contains cycasin, which causes vomiting, melena, jaundice, thirst, bruising, liver damage or liver failure when ingested by pets. 25. Schefflera (Schefflera actinophylla) Schleffera contains irritating compounds that can cause mouth pain, burning sensation in the area around the mouth, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. 26. Yew (Taxus spp.) The yew plant, including the foliage, contains taxine, which can cause very sudden death in pets.
