August trade mission to focus on wood products
Georgia timber producers are invited to participate
By Jay Jones
jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
Georgia timber producers will get a chance to meet potential new customers from India, China and Vietnam during an inbound trade mission sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Southern United States Trade Association.
The visit is officially called the Wood Species Inbound Mission to Georgia, Maryland and Louisiana and will highlight different forestry products from each state. Buyers from the three countries will visit Georgia on Aug. 17 and 18 to meet with producers and discuss business opportunities.
There are 10 slots available for Georgia companies to meet with buyers focusing on the state's pine logs and wood products. The buyers will also visit Maryland on Aug. 15 and 16 and Louisiana on Aug. 19 and 20, according to Sarah Cook, GDA's Georgia Grown domestic trade specialist, who is coordinating the visit in Georgia with SUSTA.
Cook said the inbound trade mission is nothing new since SUSTA helps promote international agricultural products year-round. But the August mission will be the SUSTA's first ever to focus on forestry products.
Cook said Georgia is a leader in forestry in the United States and was a natural choice to be a host state for the mission.
"Georgia is the number one forestry producing state in the nation, and we hope to increase to Asian countries looking to purchase some of that production for building supplies and materials," Cook said.
Timber is 80 percent of all forestry products produced
10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary in Georgia, including pine straw, Christmas trees and other
products. Georgia has the largest acreage of timberland of any state and the largest annual timber harvest, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission.
Georgia's forestry sector generates $36 billion and supports 148,000 jobs for the state's economy, according to the GFC's 2021 annual report.
Cook explained trade consultants working with SUSTA would match buyers with producers during the mission. "If someone is selling pine pellets, they will find a buyer looking for pine pellets," she said.
Also, depending on the number of companies signed up and the type of products offered, the mission could organize on-site visits to lumber producer facilities or gather in one place to meet one-on-one.
"It's kind of like speed dating," said Cook about the oneon-one meetings. "We would schedule where they have 30 minutes with each company, and they can ask about availability, they can ask about shipping and freight, timeline, and things like that. Buyers will sometimes offer an order immediately, or sometimes it will open up a conversation for them to call them back a month or two later."
The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds the trade mission through its Market Access Program. Trade associations across the country receive funding to promote U.S. agricul-
tural products overseas. Danielle Viguerie Coco, SUSTA marketing and commu-
nications director, explained that USDA only supported marketing efforts for food, fiber, and fish products until yellow pine products were included in funding in 2019. The funding was refined a year later to include all wood products.
Coco said the SUSTA trade mission to the three states is the only planned event this year supporting wood products, but the funding expansion under MAP now means wood producers can enroll in SUSTA's cost-share program. Producers that qualify as a small business can get up to 50
percent of their marketing expenses covered by the USDA's MAP. Coco said the expenses could cover travel costs for trade shows, marketing materials and even updating a company website for foreign language translation.
Georgia is also a major exporter of wood products with a growing market in Europe for wood pellets, which are used for heating by residential and commercial interests. Cook hoped the inbound trade mission would generate new opportunities for other products. Both Coco and Cook said the construction sectors in China, India, and Vietnam are outgrowing their domestic timber producers, so there are opportunities. "I know we have a ton of product going out of the Brunswick and Savannah ports. I know the trade is there. I'm just hoping to accelerate that trade," Cook said. Georgia companies interested in participating in the Wood Species Inbound Mission can contact Cook at sarah. cook@agr.georgia.gov or call 229.454.0612. Forestry Matters: Commission monitors pests that plague Georgia forests
By Stasia Kelly Georgia Forestry Commission
If you've noticed some odd white/brown spots on your oak leaves lately, you're not alone. Foresters at the Georgia Forestry Commission have been fielding calls and examining trees, confirming that the oak leafminer has been on a feeding frenzy.
The leafminer's food of choice is white oaks including white oak, overcup oak, post oak, chestnut oak, and swamp chestnut oak. While infestation rates vary from year to year, this spring we saw fairly widespread damage in north Georgia, as evidenced by the insect trails and galleries they left behind.
The leafminer lays its eggs on leaves and then once hatched, the larva feeds F O R E S T R Y on the material between the leaves' layM A T T E R S ers. A small, crisp, white-brown bubble is left behind on the leaf, and each bubble contains a single moth larva. It emerges as a small adult moth. The problem usually takes care of itself without human intervention. As leafminer populations grow, the number of beneficial insects that feed on oak leafminer increases as well. Heavy infestations that cause leaves to turn brown and drop don't usually affect the tree's overall health. The injury is mainly cosmetic and new leaves should grow in their place. Chemical treatment is not recommended unless the tree is young and a favorite specimen. It does help to remove and destroy any fallen leaves that are infested. Late season larvae overwinter in those leaves and make their debut the following spring. If the pests continue to be a problem, a certified arborist will have recommendations for treatment. More information can be found here https://gatrees.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/ OAK-LEAFMINER-FACTSHEET.pdf. Southern pine beetles have plagued many a Georgia landowner over the years. It is the most destructive forest pest in the southeast, capable of destroying tens of thousands of acres of trees in a single swarm. Fortunately, SPB activity is predicted to be low across the state in 2022. The Georgia Forestry Commission participates annually in the southern pine beetle prediction trapping program. Survey results are documented in an annual report so that activity and damage levels can be anticipated and mitigated. GFC foresters set special traps statewide that are baited with three lures. Placement coincides with redbud bloom in March. This year, the GFC placed 50 traps across the state in 50 counties and six weekly samples were collected from each trap (Figure 2). The number of SPB and clerid beetles (a natural predator of SPB) were counted each week, with the average number of SPB per-trap per-day at 15.2. (Figure 3). This number is considered low. Carroll County had the highest average of 154.5. Oglethorpe and Oconee counties had SPB per-trap per-day counts between 50 and 80. Clarke, Dawson, Green, Heard, Jones, Morgan, Putnam, Randolph, Stewart, and Webster had SPB per-trap per-day counts between 20 and 50 and the remaining 37 traps had an average of fewer than 20 SPB per-trap per-day (very low). U.S. Forest Service prediction models show the four greatest factors in predicting the probability of an area having SPB spots are the average number of SPB collected per two-week period, the average number of clerid beetles collected per two-week period, and the number of SPB spots in that county the previous two years. The results from the 2022 survey predict that overall SPB activity will be low across the state, with only one area having a high probability of any spots Carroll County. These prediction models help guide landowners in management decisions. They do not guarantee that outbreaks will or will not occur on their property. Aerial surveys will

be conducted in the summer of 2022 to document and monitor pine beetle activity
The best advice is for landowners to manage for healthy forests with techniques such as thinning, prescribed burning and invasive species control. In the past decade, SPB outbreaks have been limited to infestations in stands that are either over-stocked or over-mature. Southern pine beetle favors pine stands that are over-crowded and stressed.
The GFC will continue to monitor locations of beetle spots throughout the year. All reported beetle activity will be surveyed and monitored to mitigate damage for landowners. All infestations will be reported to landowners, and GFC foresters will work with landowners to limit damage and control infestations. For additional information contact GFC's Lynne Womack, lwomack@gfc.state.ga.us, or Mark McClure, mmcclure@gfc.state.ga.us.

with AgGeorgia in 2014, with checks expected to be delivered by the last week of June. This comes after AgGeorgia's board already declared a cash dividend of over $13
million in April to borrowers who had loans in 2021. The upcoming distribution brings the total paid to member-owners this year to $22,487,515.
"Given soaring input costs, it is a great feeling to know we have helped our members' cash flows considerably by paying out over $22 million in 2022," said Jack Bentley, chairman of AgGeorgia's Board of Directors.
The June payout consists of surplus revolvement from AgGeorgia's 2014 Patronage Refunds. Surplus portions were taxable when declared at that time, so no additional income taxes are due on the disbursement. Members with outstanding surplus earned from 2015-2020 will continue to receive surplus checks over the next several years, subject to annual board approval, while AgGeorgia completes its transition to the allcash patronage plan. Starting with the 2021 refund, patronage refunds are now paid in all-cash rather than a cash/retained surplus split.

Georgie's Drive
Thru Valdosta
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 indus-
try, agriculture! This time of year, my family does a lot
of fishing. That means going through a lot of bait, like
crickets and worms, and a lot of money. Last week, I went
near Valdosta and met a lady named MeMe that had the
same problem a few years ago. So, she decided to grow
her own worms on her back porch. She did so good that
she moved them out into a bin in the yard, then she built
a couple of greenhouses, then she expanded her business
by moving to a huge farm shed nearby. She mostly sells

duce 32 pounds of wigglers and one ton of castings. In
case you're wondering, castings are what a worm poops
out after eating a refreshing meal of saw dust and live-
stock feed. MeMe still grows bait worms, too, called Eu-
ropean Nightcrawlers. They are sold at local bait shops
near Banks Lake. The worms are also available online Red wigglers are ripe for gardeners at MeMe's Worms near Valdosta. (Lee

An American gardener at the Chelsea Flower Show
British tradition wows with tributes to Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee
By Jen Carson Erdmann, Ph.D.
jen.erdmann@agr.georgia.gov
LONDON, ENGLAND This is no ordinary flower show. That was my first thought as I entered the gates to the
grounds of the Royal Hospital in London, near the banks of the River Thames. The Royal Horticultural Society has hosted the Chelsea Flower Show at this location since 1913, and while not the biggest flower show in the United Kingdom (that honor goes to the Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival in June), it's certainly the most prestigious. And I was about to find out why.
It's notoriously difficult to get a ticket to Chelsea, but luck was on my side when I visited England in late May 2022. England is a country of gardeners, aided by ample rain, fertile soils, and surprisingly mild weather for much of the year. This combination leads about 157,000 people to make the annual May pilgrimage to see and gain inspiration from the spectacular displays designed by more than 500 of the nation's finest landscape designers, growers, artists, and vendors.
My visit on May 24 occurred shortly after Queen Elizabeth II's tour of the show, made all the more special by the displays in honor of Her Majesty's 70th Jubilee celebrations. While I was there, the BBC was actively filming, bringing more star power by featuring the hosts of Britain's long-running TV show Gardener's World. Stateside, the show can be seen on BritBox and YouTube and fellow watchers would likely recognize its longtime hosts Mary Berry and Monty Don. Much like Georgia, a large part of England lies in the Royal Horticulture Society/U.S. Department of Agriculture's
Zone 8, so many of the plants featured at Chelsea would also be familiar to us here in the southland.
But where to begin? The flow of the crowd led me to the outdoor displays, known as the Show Gardens, all competing for the much-coveted Gold Medal. Here, expertly landscaped gardens were created with mature trees and dense thickets of blooming flowers and shrubs. Many featured elaborate hardscapes, ornate water features, glass and wood gazebos, and fine art pieces that felt as natural as the bounty of plants surrounding them.
Alliums were in peak season, so their cheery purple snowballs popped up from many of the landscapes. Salvia, geranium, peony, azalea, and foxglove were also in abundance, fitting pieces for their cottage garden charm. I couldn't help but to intervene when I overheard two proper English ladies gushing over a lush flowering tree on the periphery of one of the installations, trying to guess what it was; "Cornus kousa, aka Kousa dogwood," I piped up. "They thrive back in my home state of Georgia."
Within the three-acre Great Pavilion, growers showcased their newest creations. With a Pimms Cup in hand and a thunderstorm looming, I made my way inside. As an avid grower of succulents, I was thrilled that one such offering was deemed RHS's 2022 Plant of the Year: Semponium Surreal `Destiny.' With its deep-purple hued, thick, textured leaves, it beat out 19 other new species in this year's coveted competition. A cross between an Aeonium and Sempervivum, this beauty should be making its way "across the pond" relatively soon, the Cornish growers assured me.
Another stunning display, this one of nearly 2,000 Clematis plants, led to a lovely chat with famed nurseryman Ray-
mond Evison, who showed-off his newest creation, Clematis Issey. It features a vibrant fuchsia-red flower with a delicate yellow center and was a standout among the 40 other varies he's created over the years. Despite his typical English reserve, I could tell he was quite proud of it (and rightly so).
Near the entrance to the Great Pavilion, the owner of Home Farm Plants displayed his stunning selection of Delphinium x belladonna and D. elatum (aka Larkspur), some reaching nearly seven feet in height. Nearby, the British Iris Society showed off 100 years of beautiful "beardies."
Every display seemed to be topped by the next, but the 1800-square-foot installation by David Austen Roses at the Pavilion's center was enough to momentarily steal the breath from this longtime gardener. Here, Rosa Elizabeth `Ausmajesty' garnered the main stage, as it was created for the Queen's Jubilee. This new variety promises both shade-tolerance and disease-resistance, two features coveted by many rose growers. Not to be outdone, a nearby and equally stunning display by Peter Beales Roses showcased Rosa Loyal Companion `Beaqueen', a new compact floribunda featuring semi-double fragrant blooms in delicate mixed hues of coral to pink.
There was so much to see at the Chelsea Flower Show that I spent the better part of the day there. At times I found myself murmuring "It's all too much!" Yet it was overwhelming in the best way possible. It was a longtime dream of mine to attend the show and I hope I've been able to impart even a sliver of the beauty that I found in this wonderous annual event.
